This approach works well for a game studio careers board, an esports hiring site, a freelance-development community, or a multi-employer marketplace. The important decisions are not visual first: decide who may post, how applications are handled, what information each listing must contain, how long jobs remain visible, and whether employers pay before publication.

What you need before building the board
A WordPress job board is a workflow, not just a list of posts. Before installing anything, establish the operational foundation that will protect submissions and keep listings trustworthy.
- A working WordPress installation on a host whose current PHP and database versions meet WordPress and plugin requirements at launch.
- HTTPS enabled across the site, including login, submission, and application pages.
- Automated backups and a staging copy where plugin, theme, and extension updates can be tested.
- Reliable transactional email delivery. Employer confirmations, moderation notices, password resets, and application messages all depend on it.
- A named administrator responsible for approving listings, handling spam, answering support requests, and removing stale jobs.
Check the current WordPress, PHP, database, WP Job Manager, and extension requirements immediately before launch. Release and compatibility information changes; the Automattic repository showed WP Job Manager version 2.4.8 dated October 7, 2026 when this guide was prepared, so treat that version as a dated reference rather than a permanent requirement.

Choose the board model before choosing extensions
Write down the answers to these questions before styling the site. They determine the minimum viable configuration and prevent you from buying or maintaining features you do not need.
Who can submit a listing?
- Administrator only: staff enter every job and employers contact you with changes. This is the simplest model for a small studio or curated game-industry board.
- Employer self-service: companies submit and manage jobs from the front end. You need clear permissions, moderation, anti-spam controls, and support instructions.
- Paid marketplace: employers purchase a listing package, submit a job, and wait for payment and any required approval before publication.
Where will applications go?
- External application: a listing sends candidates to the employer’s careers page or a specified email address. This keeps the WordPress data footprint small.
- On-site records: an application form stores candidate submissions in WordPress and gives employers a dashboard. This is more convenient for employers but creates additional privacy, retention, and security responsibilities.
Do candidates need accounts?
A board can send applicants to an external destination without requiring a WordPress account. Account-based features become useful when candidates need saved searches, alerts, bookmarks, or a searchable resume profile.

Decide which fields are mandatory, whether remote work is a separate status, which employment types and categories are available, and whether salary ranges are displayed. A consistent data model makes filtering useful and keeps listings comparable.
Install WP Job Manager
WP Job Manager is a lightweight job-listing plugin from Automattic. Its free core provides searchable and filterable AJAX listings, front-end employer submission and management, previews, application contact methods, RSS links, employer statistics, and support for extensions. Automattic describes the core plugin as free and states that it will remain free.
- Sign in to WordPress as an administrator.
- Open Plugins > Add New.
- Search for WP Job Manager, verify the publisher, and install the current release.
- Select Activate.
If the dashboard installer is unavailable, download the plugin through its official distribution channel, upload the plugin directory to wp-content/plugins/, and activate it from Plugins > Installed Plugins. Take a backup before installation or upgrades and test updates on staging first.
Create the three pages the plugin expects
The repository README documents a simple page setup using shortcodes. Create ordinary WordPress pages and place one shortcode on each page.

- Create a page titled Jobs and insert
[jobs]. Publish it. This is the searchable listing directory. - Create a page titled Submit Job and insert
[submit_job_form]. Publish it when employers should submit from the front end. - Create a page titled Job Dashboard and insert
[job_dashboard]. Publish it so logged-in users can manage their own listings.
Open each page while logged out and while logged in as a test employer. Confirm that the listing archive, submission form, preview, login prompts, and dashboard appear in the intended locations. Assign the pages in Job Manager > Settings > Pages so navigation and redirects use the correct URLs.
Configure the settings that control publication and privacy
Open Job Manager > Settings. The documented tabs are General, Job Listings, Job Submission, Captcha, Pages, and Job Visibility. Configure them in a staging copy, then repeat or migrate the settings carefully on production.
General
Set site-wide behavior such as listing limits and date presentation where those controls are available. Decide how many jobs an employer may have active, how long a listing remains current, and what date information candidates should see. Use a future publication date for scheduled listings when your editorial calendar requires jobs to go live later.
Job Listings
Choose the public directory’s display and filtering behavior. Test keyword search, location or remote filtering, category filtering, pagination, and the mobile layout with representative game-industry roles such as gameplay programmer, QA tester, technical artist, and community manager.

Define who may submit, whether accounts are required, whether every submission is held for administrator approval, and which application method is offered. Previewing a listing before submission is useful for catching missing salary, location, or contact details. Keep moderation enabled until you understand the spam volume and employer workflow.
Captcha
Enable CAPTCHA on submission and account-related forms when appropriate. WP Job Manager and its Applications and Resume Manager extensions support reCAPTCHA. Test the challenge on desktop and mobile, and verify that a failed challenge does not erase entered form data.

Pages
Map the Jobs, Submit Job, and Job Dashboard settings to the pages containing the corresponding shortcodes. A wrong page assignment can produce loops, blank links, or redirects to an unrelated page even when the shortcode itself is correct.
Job Visibility
Use role and capability restrictions when some listings should be visible only to members, employers, or another authenticated group. An empty visibility restriction leaves listings public, so review this tab before publishing private or partner-only vacancies. Test visibility with a visitor, a normal account, and an administrator.
Define a consistent listing data model
Write the field specification before changing templates or adding taxonomies. Every employer should provide enough information for a candidate to decide whether to apply.
- Title: use a specific role rather than a vague label such as “developer needed.”
- Description: explain responsibilities, required skills, team context, and the hiring process.
- Company: show the legal or trading name candidates should recognize.
- Location: capture city, country, time zone, and whether the role is remote, hybrid, or on-site.
- Employment type: distinguish full-time, part-time, contract, freelance, internship, and temporary work where relevant.
- Category and tags: use stable groups such as programming, art, design, production, QA, publishing, esports, and community. Tags can add narrower skills.
- Salary range: state currency and pay period, and explain whether the range varies by location.
- Closing date: make the deadline explicit when one exists.
- Application method: identify the external URL, email destination, or on-site form.
- Company website and logo: give candidates a way to verify the employer and recognize its listing.
Publish a short employer style guide with examples of acceptable titles, salary formatting, remote-work labels, and inclusive language. Consistency improves search results more than decorative design does.
Choose an application workflow
External email or URL
The core plugin can direct applicants to an employer-supplied email address or external application URL. This is a sensible starting point for a niche board because candidate records stay with the employer and the WordPress site stores less sensitive information. Verify every link and send a test message before approving a listing.
Applications extension
Add the Applications extension when employers need an on-site form and an employer dashboard for candidate records. Decide which fields are collected, who can view them, how long records are retained, and how an employer exports or deletes them. Enable CAPTCHA and restrict access to the employer who owns the listing and to authorized administrators.

Publish a privacy notice, employer terms, moderation rules, and a retention policy. These documents should describe what is collected, why it is collected, who can access it, and when it is deleted. Obtain legal advice for the jurisdictions you target; a plugin setting is not a substitute for compliance advice.
Add only the extensions that match your board
The free core can support an administrator-managed board or a basic self-service directory. Extend it when a clear workflow requires the additional data or automation.

Do not install every extension at launch. Each addition introduces updates, permissions, email paths, and data to maintain. A small board can begin with core plus an external application link. A marketplace with many employers will usually need applications, alerts, moderation, and paid-listing controls.

Charging for a listing is a publication workflow: payment, submission, review, and expiration must agree with one another. Select a package structure, write what each package includes, and decide what happens when an administrator rejects a submission or an employer edits a paid listing.
Simple Paid Listings
Use this route when you want paid listing packages without building the checkout around WooCommerce. Confirm the current extension requirements and payment behavior before committing, because those details can change between releases.
WooCommerce Paid Listings
Use this route when your site already relies on WooCommerce or you want listing packages represented as WooCommerce products. WooCommerce is a prerequisite. Test the complete sequence in a sandbox: select a package, complete payment, return to WordPress, submit a job, trigger moderation, publish the job, and handle a failed or abandoned payment.

Monetization decisions to document
- Whether payment is required before submission, before approval, or before publication.
- How many active listings and what duration each package provides.
- Whether an employer may edit a paid listing without resetting its review status.
- What happens when a listing expires, is rejected, or is withdrawn.
- Who handles refunds, duplicate payments, tax questions, and payment disputes.
Avoid advertising prices, commissions, or payment gateways until you have verified the current extension terms and your target region’s availability.
Launch the board in a controlled sequence
- Prepare infrastructure. Choose a reliable WordPress host, enable HTTPS, configure backups, and create a staging copy.
- Install the core. Install and activate WP Job Manager, then confirm that the administrator can create a test listing.
- Build the pages. Create Jobs with
[jobs], Submit Job with[submit_job_form], and Job Dashboard with[job_dashboard]. Assign them in the Pages settings. - Set permissions and review. Configure who may submit, whether login is required, whether submissions need approval, and which roles can see restricted listings.
- Protect forms. Configure CAPTCHA, test failed challenges, and verify email delivery.
- Standardize fields. Add categories and tags, require the listing information your audience needs, and write employer instructions.
- Publish representative jobs. Use several roles, locations, employment types, salary formats, and remote statuses so search and filters can be evaluated realistically.
- Test the candidate path. Search from a logged-out device, apply through every available method, check confirmation messages, and test the mobile layout.
- Test expiration. Confirm that closing dates and expired-listing behavior match the policy shown to employers and candidates.
- Add business extensions. Install Applications, Resume Manager, Job Alerts, taxonomies, widgets, or paid-listing tools only after the core path works.
- Test payments if used. Run successful, failed, refunded, and abandoned checkout scenarios before accepting real employer orders.
- Publish support documents. Provide employer submission instructions, candidate application guidance, privacy and terms notices, and a contact route for corrections.
- Monitor after launch. Watch for spam, failed emails, duplicate listings, stale jobs, broken application URLs, and unauthorized access to candidate data.
Common problems and precise checks
The Jobs page is empty
Confirm that at least one listing is published rather than pending, expired, or restricted by role. Check that the page contains [jobs] exactly and that it is selected under Job Manager > Settings > Pages. Test the page while logged out in case visibility rules are hiding the listing.

Employers cannot submit
Check the Job Submission permission, account requirement, CAPTCHA configuration, and the page containing [submit_job_form]. Submit a test listing with the same role an employer uses; administrators can see behavior that a normal account cannot.
The dashboard shows no jobs
Log in as the account that owns a test listing and verify that the listing was submitted under that account. Confirm the page contains [job_dashboard] and that the page assignment is correct.
Applications are not arriving
For email applications, test the exact address and inspect delivery logs or the recipient’s spam folder. For external URLs, open the link on a logged-out device and confirm it does not require an unintended account. For on-site Applications records, verify the employer’s permissions and the listing ownership.
Private jobs are visible publicly
Review Job Visibility. Empty restrictions make listings public. Test the listing with an anonymous browser, a regular account, the intended member role, and an administrator.
Listings become stale
Require a closing date or a review date, assign an owner to each employer account, and schedule a recurring check for expired roles. Remove or archive jobs according to the retention policy rather than leaving misleading “open” vacancies in search results.
Use a decision framework for the first release

For a video-game audience, launch with categories that reflect how studios and communities actually hire, then measure which filters candidates use before expanding the taxonomy. A shorter, well-maintained list of categories is more useful than dozens of overlapping labels.
What makes the board trustworthy
- Show the employer name, location or remote status, employment type, compensation information when available, and a closing date.
- Require an application destination that has been tested by staff.
- Moderate first-time employers and suspiciously repetitive submissions.
- Give employers a way to correct or withdraw a listing.
- Give candidates a clear route to report a broken link, misleading description, or expired job.
- Keep candidate data separate from public listing data and delete it according to the published retention policy.
- Review plugin and extension updates on staging, maintain backups, and re-test forms after every update.
Build the smallest workflow that can be moderated reliably. WP Job Manager’s core covers the directory and basic submission path; extensions should solve a specific operational problem, not compensate for an undefined process.
