To make a golem in Conan Exiles, unlock Golem Shaping by speaking with Master Carver Huang, build a Golem Workbench and Guardian Assembly Station, craft the parts you want, and activate the assembled construct. A standard golem uses one head, one torso, two legs and two arms. Material tier, coatings and weapon arms then determine whether it is better suited to combat, gathering or a mixture of both.

What Golem Shaping is and what you unlock
Golem Shaping is the Age of Sorcery Chapter 3 crafting system for building an animated follower from interchangeable body parts. It is not a single recipe that produces a finished creature. You first learn the construction knowledge, then manufacture individual components, fit them together and perform the station’s activation ritual.
Find Master Carver Huang
Huang appears in two different places depending on the map you are playing:

Speak with Huang and learn the free Golem Constructor knowledge. Funcom’s official guide states that speaking to him enables you to craft both the Golem Workbench and the Guardian Assembly Station. If neither station appears in your construction menu, Huang is the first requirement to check.
What the Constructor knowledge does
Golem Constructor provides access to the two stations, but it does not automatically give you every body-part recipe. The component recipes are progression choices in the Sorcery knowledge tree. You must unlock the recipes for the parts, coatings and tools you intend to use before the Workbench can make them.

The two stations and their construction costs
The stations have separate jobs. The Golem Workbench manufactures components; the Guardian Assembly Station is where those components are placed and animated. Both are crafted with a Construction Hammer.

These are recipe quantities for the stations. They are not estimates of the total resources for a complete golem, because the cost of each component depends on the recipes you unlock and choose.
Why you need both stations
A Workbench by itself cannot animate a follower. It only turns your materials and unlocked knowledge into parts. Conversely, the Assembly Station cannot substitute for the Workbench: it needs finished parts in its slots. Plan a location with room for both stations and storage for the materials used by your chosen component recipes.
Step-by-step: build and animate your first golem
- Speak with Huang. Travel to Mek-Kamoses’s Spire in the Exiled Lands or the Camp of the Castaways on the Isle of Siptah. Interact with Master Carver Huang and learn Golem Constructor.
- Craft the Guardian Assembly Station. Use a Construction Hammer and spend 100 Brick plus 100 Iron Bar. Place the station where you can reach it after producing parts.
- Craft the Golem Workbench. With the same construction tool, spend 100 Brick, 50 Iron Bar and 300 Wood. Place it near the Assembly Station so you can move components efficiently.
- Unlock component knowledge. Open the Sorcery knowledge tree and select the recipes that match your intended build. The progression options listed for the system include Stone Guardian Shaper, Stone Guardian Tools, Brimstone Guardian Coating, Tar Guardian Coating, Iron Guardian Shaper, Iron Guardian Tools and Crystalline Guardian Tools.
- Make the parts. At the Golem Workbench, craft the head, torso, two legs, arms and any coatings or weapon arms you want. A weapon arm is made by fusing a weapon with an empty arm, so prepare both pieces before attempting that recipe.
- Load the Assembly Station. Put the selected components into the station’s slots. The normal complete arrangement is one head, one torso, two legs and two arms.
- Perform the activation. Start the station’s short ritual. The assembled construct animates and becomes a follower.
The station handles the final animation; there is no separate field craft or additional follower item described for this system. If the ritual will not start, inspect the part arrangement and arm requirement before replacing materials.

A complete build has six body pieces: one head, one torso, two legs and two arms. The duplicate leg and arm slots are intentional; they represent the two sides of the construct rather than two different recipe categories.

Incomplete bodies can still animate
The system allows some incomplete arrangements to animate. A headless or armless golem can therefore become a follower, but missing pieces make it less useful in combat. This is useful when you are testing a recipe or lack a particular component, but it is not equivalent to a finished combat build.
The mandatory paired-arm rule
There is one important exception to the general flexibility: if you fit one arm, you must fit a second arm. A one-armed arrangement cannot be animated. The second arm does not have to be the same weapon or material, so you can use the rule to create an asymmetric loadout, but both arm slots must be occupied whenever either slot is used.
Why the torso and legs still matter
The torso and legs complete the physical frame even when your priority is a weapon arm. Treat them as core structural pieces in a planned build. The available information does not establish a universal combat statistic for any particular combination, so choose the pieces according to the role, material tier and recipes you can support rather than assuming one body layout is always superior.
Material tiers: stone, iron and crystalline components
Material choice is the first major build decision. Stone is the basic starting material. Iron represents a more advanced component direction, while crystalline or blood-crystal options support more powerful parts. The progression tree exposes these choices through separate shaper and tool knowledge.

These labels describe the material and progression paths, not a published damage multiplier or health percentage. No authoritative performance figure establishes a single best tier for every player or role.
Unlock the tier before visiting the Workbench
If a part appears to be missing, return to the Sorcery tree and look for the relevant shaper or tool knowledge. Learning Golem Constructor unlocks the stations, while Stone Guardian Shaper, Iron Guardian Shaper and the guardian tool entries control access to many component recipes. A Workbench that has been built correctly can still look empty when the required recipe knowledge has not been learned.
Choose the golem’s job before choosing its weapon
Weapon arms and coatings let you tune a construct for a task. The appropriate choice depends on what you expect the follower to do, not on a universal ranking.

The examples above come from Funcom’s guidance. They indicate intended use cases, not a measured ranking of weapon damage or collection speed.
Combat-oriented construction
Start with a complete body: head, torso, two legs and two arms. Choose a weapon arm that matches the enemies and terrain where the follower will operate, and use a coating when its behavior suits the encounter. A complete frame avoids the obvious combat drawback of missing limbs, while the head contributes to the golem’s health according to the build-comparison guidance for this system.
Plant gathering construction
For plants, the scythe and sickle examples point toward a harvesting-focused arm. Create an empty arm at the Workbench, fuse the weapon with it to produce the weapon arm, and craft a second arm for the paired slot. You can still use a full head, torso and legs so the gathering follower is not needlessly fragile when traveling.
Mineral gathering construction
A maul is the stated example for mineral gathering. The same fusion rule applies: the weapon is combined with an empty arm, and the resulting weapon arm occupies one side of the Assembly Station. Make a second arm before activation; the station will not animate a one-armed arrangement.
Mixed-use construction
An axe is the example when you want one follower to help with gathering while remaining capable of fighting. This role is useful when you do not want separate followers for plants and minerals, but it necessarily trades specialization for flexibility. Select your coating and body materials with that compromise in mind.
Heads, torsos, legs, arms and coatings
Head
The head is not merely cosmetic. The build criteria identify the head as a contributor to health, so include one when survivability matters. A headless construct can animate under the system’s incomplete-build rules, but it gives up that part of the intended configuration and is less useful in combat.
Torso
The torso is the central body component in the six-part arrangement. It is required for a normal complete build and should be treated as part of the frame before you spend resources on a specialized arm.

Legs
Two legs form the standard lower-body arrangement. The documented six-part layout calls for both legs, even though the system permits some incomplete constructs to animate. For a dependable follower, craft and install both.
Arms and weapon arms
Arms are the part that most directly changes the golem’s task. An empty arm can remain a basic limb, or it can be fused with a weapon to make a weapon arm. Because one fitted arm requires a second, decide on both sides before loading the station. The two arms can be selected to support your role rather than being treated as a single mandatory weapon pair.
Coatings
Brimstone Guardian Coating and Tar Guardian Coating are listed progression options. Specialized coatings can change combat behavior, so they belong in a combat plan or in a mixed build where the behavior is useful. The available guidance does not publish exact numerical effects for either coating; select them for the behavior described by their recipe and test the result in the situations where you intend to use the follower.
Why the Golem Workbench looks empty
An empty or nearly empty Workbench usually means a prerequisite is missing rather than that the station is broken. Check the following in order.

- Confirm Huang was contacted. You need Golem Constructor from Master Carver Huang. Building or finding a Workbench without that knowledge does not replace the unlock step.
- Confirm you are using the Golem Workbench. The Guardian Assembly Station is for fitting and animation, not for manufacturing components.
- Open the Sorcery knowledge tree. Unlock the shaper, tool and coating recipes for the tier and role you want. The Workbench only exposes recipes your character knows.
- Check the recipe category. Heads, torsos, legs, arms, coatings and weapon arms are distinct outputs. A weapon arm will not appear until you have the empty arm and the weapon-fusion recipe available.
- Verify materials. Station construction consumes its own brick, iron-bar and wood quantities. Component recipes consume additional materials, and those costs vary with the selected recipe.
If the station is present and the relevant knowledge is unlocked but one item is still absent, compare the name in the Sorcery tree with the component category you are searching for. Stone, iron and crystalline paths are separate progression choices, so unlocking one does not imply that every other tier is available.

Budget for the two permanent stations before gathering component materials. The Assembly Station requires 100 Brick and 100 Iron Bar; the Workbench requires 100 Brick, 50 Iron Bar and 300 Wood. Together, the station recipes consume 200 Brick, 150 Iron Bar and 300 Wood, before any head, torso, leg, arm, coating or weapon recipe is paid.
The remaining investment cannot be reduced to one universal total because it depends on the build. A stone frame, an iron frame and a crystalline or blood-crystal frame use different progression paths and component requirements. Weapon arms also add the cost of both the empty arm and the weapon that is fused into it. Gather or craft the parts only after deciding whether the follower is for combat, plants, minerals or a mixed assignment.

Plan for two arms even when one weapon is the priority
A common waste is crafting one expensive weapon arm and discovering that activation requires another arm. Reserve materials for the paired slot before you start the ritual. The second arm can be a simpler choice if your role only needs one specialized tool, but it must exist.

The brick, iron-bar and wood figures are the construction recipes for the stations themselves. They are not the cost of the golem’s body. Keep a separate materials budget for the six body slots, coatings and any weapons you will fuse.
Three practical build plans
Basic stone utility golem
- Unlock Golem Constructor through Huang.
- Build both stations.
- Unlock the stone shaper and tool knowledge that matches your intended task.
- Craft one head, one torso, two legs and two arms.
- Use an axe if you want the documented mixed gathering-and-fighting example, or leave the arms as basic components for a general follower.
- Activate the complete arrangement.
This plan keeps the first build straightforward and limits the decision to role and arm selection while you learn the station workflow.
Iron combat golem
- Unlock Iron Guardian Shaper and Iron Guardian Tools in the Sorcery tree after learning Golem Constructor.
- Craft a complete six-part body from the iron path.
- Select a weapon arm suited to the enemies you expect to face and consider Brimstone or Tar Guardian Coating if its combat behavior fits your plan.
- Load both arms, even if only one is a weapon arm.
- Activate the station and use the follower as a combat-oriented construct.
This is a role example, not a claim that iron always outperforms every other material. The correct choice depends on your available progression and the job you need done.
Crystalline or blood-crystal specialist
- Advance to the crystalline or blood-crystal-supported recipes available to your character.
- Craft the specialized parts you can sustain, including the appropriate tools or weapon arms.
- Use the full head, torso, two-leg and two-arm arrangement when the follower will work away from safety.
- Choose the gathering tool that matches the resource: scythe or sickle for plants, maul for minerals, or axe for a mixed role.
- Activate only after both arm slots are filled.
Crystalline and blood-crystal options are described as supporting more powerful parts, but no official numerical damage, health or gathering multiplier is established. Treat the tier as a progression and resource decision rather than a guaranteed universal best.
Activation, follower use and limitations
After the components are in place, use the Guardian Assembly Station’s short ritual to animate the construct. Successful activation turns it into a follower. The essential checks are the part layout and the two-arm rule; a headless or armless body may still work, but a one-armed body will not animate.
Once active, assign the golem to the task implied by its parts. A weapon arm made with a scythe or sickle is the documented plant-gathering direction, a maul points to minerals, and an axe supports a mixed gathering-and-fighting role. Coatings can alter combat behavior, so they are most relevant when the follower will encounter enemies rather than simply collect resources.
What the available guidance does not establish
There is no published universal win rate, damage percentage, health total, collection-speed benchmark or other performance statistic that proves one golem combination is optimal in every situation. Avoid treating a material name, weapon example or coating as a guaranteed numerical upgrade. Match the build to the job, then judge it in the terrain and encounters where you will actually use it.

- The Guardian Assembly Station was built with 100 Brick and 100 Iron Bar.
- The Golem Workbench was built with 100 Brick, 50 Iron Bar and 300 Wood.

- The Workbench, not the Assembly Station, is being used to craft parts.
- Weapon arms were made by fusing a weapon with an empty arm.
- The Assembly Station has one head, one torso, two legs and two arms for a complete build.
- If either arm slot is used, the second arm slot is also filled.
- The weapon and coating choices match the intended combat, plant, mineral or mixed role.
Follow that sequence and you have a repeatable path from Huang’s knowledge unlock to an animated follower, while keeping material and weapon decisions tied to the task the golem must perform.
