Players often call this process taming or breeding, but the current horse and Stable documentation describes raising a foal rather than mating two adult horses. This guide explains where to look, which feeds and timers are documented, how horse variants work, how to choose a saddle, and what server settings can change.

A horse has three practical stages: a wild foal in the world, a Stable recipe that raises the foal, and an adult mount that needs a saddle before most riding functions are available. The process is deliberately different from capturing an adult animal.
- Find a foal. Search likely horse-spawn areas on your map and use the interact prompt to pick the foal up.
- Return to your base. Carry the foal to a built Stable.
- Load the Stable. Put the foal in the Stable inventory and add a valid feed, such as Plant Fiber in the standard recipe.
- Wait for production. The Stable converts the foal and feed into an adult Horse when the recipe timer completes.
- Remove the Horse. Take the finished animal from the Stable.
- Equip a saddle. Put the saddle in the horse’s separate armor slot, then summon or mount the horse through the normal follower and mount controls.
If a guide tells you to lasso, knock out, or capture an adult horse, it is describing a different game system or an outdated interpretation. The documented Conan Exiles method starts with a foal.

Where to find horse foals
Spawn areas are map- and server-dependent
Foal availability is not identical on every map, platform, or private server. A practical Exiled Lands example is the K5/K6 area, which GamerGuides identifies as a place to search. Treat that location as a starting area rather than a universal coordinate list: server administrators can alter harvest and progression settings, and map updates can change the usefulness of old location guides.
Before making a long trip, check a map that is maintained for the map and game version you are actually playing. A location shown for the Exiled Lands should not be assumed to apply to the Isle of Siptah or a custom server. If a spot is empty, make a circuit around the surrounding grassland instead of concluding that horses do not exist on your server; spawn slots may be occupied by other creatures or another player may have collected the foal.

What to do when you see a foal
- Approach carefully and use the pickup interaction displayed by your platform.
- Make sure you have room to carry it and a safe route back to your base.
- Do not expect the foal to become a usable mount immediately. It remains a Stable input until the recipe completes.
- If another player reaches the foal first, search nearby spawn points after the area repopulates.
The foal is the valuable item in this stage. Protect the trip home from enemies and environmental hazards, because losing the carrier or abandoning the foal means repeating the search.
Using a Stable to raise the foal
Place the foal and feed in the Stable
Open the Stable inventory, put in one foal, and add an accepted feed. The standard Horse page lists 1 Foal plus 1 Plant Fiber as a Stable recipe that produces 1 Horse in 30 minutes. That is the clearest baseline for an ordinary horse, but it is not a guaranteed timer on every server: recipe tier and administrator settings can change crafting time.
Other Stable recipes document feeds including Bark, Seeds, Vines, and special fodders. The feed is not merely decorative; it selects a recipe or recipe tier in the Stable. If the interface does not begin a countdown, check that the item is a recognized Stable feed rather than a general animal-food item.

Documented recipe differences

The 30-minute and 45-minute values come from documented recipes, not a universal law of every Conan Exiles server. Private servers commonly change crafting-time multipliers, and harvest multipliers affect how quickly you can gather feed. Official settings and modded settings can therefore make the practical wait shorter or longer.

Read the Stable before cancelling a recipe
The Stable shows the active recipe, required input, output, and remaining time. Confirm all four before starting. If you insert a costly special fodder expecting a cosmetic horse, verify that the output row actually names that result. A recipe that produces an ordinary Horse is not automatically a skin recipe, even if the feed is rare.
What “tame” and “breed” mean for horses
Raising a foal is the player-facing taming process
In everyday player language, “tame a horse” means finding a foal and raising it in a Stable. The game does not present a separate adult-horse capture interface in the current horse documentation. Your work is logistical: locate the foal, transport it, supply the Stable, and collect the mature follower.
There is no documented horse-to-horse mating system
Many guides use “breed” as shorthand for raising, training, or producing a horse from a foal. The current Horse and Stable documentation does not show an interface for pairing two adult horses, selecting parents, or passing genetics between them. You cannot use two finished horses to make a new foal through the documented Stable recipes.
That distinction matters when planning resources. You need another wild foal for each additional horse, not two adult horses and a breeding cooldown. A second Stable can increase throughput, but it does not create a genetic-breeding system.

Horse labels, variants, and cosmetic outcomes
Regular, sturdy, and swift do not currently predict the adult type
Foal labels such as regular, sturdy, or swift are easy to read as promises of a particular adult build. The current Horse page does not establish that those labels determine the mature horse type. The foal icon is therefore not a reliable way to identify the exact adult appearance you will receive.
Ordinary variants use recipe probabilities
Several Stable recipe tables list four ordinary horse variants with a 25% chance each. That is a recipe-table probability, not a guarantee that every feed produces all four outcomes or that every server preserves the same table after a mod or balance change. If a particular appearance is important, record the feed and output shown in your own Stable before investing rare materials.

Special fodders and cosmetic routes
Some progression paths use expensive special fodders, and separate DLC or Bazaar content can provide cosmetic options. Those routes should be treated as distinct from the ordinary exploration-foal route. A cosmetic result changes appearance; it does not, by itself, prove a different base-stat profile. Check the Stable’s output label and your server’s content before spending rare resources.
Choosing and equipping a saddle
Where the saddle goes
Most horses require a saddle for practical mounted use. Open the horse’s equipment screen and place the saddle in the horse’s separate armor slot, not in the general inventory grid. If the saddle is sitting in the horse’s inventory, move it to the designated slot and check that the horse is selected as the active follower.

Compare saddles by the job you need done

There is no evidence for one universally best saddle. Pick the attribute that solves your current problem: acceleration for starting and stopping quickly, speed for long routes, defense for combat exposure, or maneuverability for rocks, ruins, and narrow approaches.
Riding, stamina, and follower utility
Why a horse changes exploration
Mounted horses travel substantially faster than walking and can carry inventory, making them useful for resource runs, scouting, and moving between bases. The extra capacity does not make the mount invulnerable. Keep enough room for emergency supplies and avoid treating a horse as a replacement for a secure storage chest.
Manage stamina before it reaches empty
Horse stamina is a real riding constraint. If it depletes, the rider can be thrown off. Long sprints, steep routes, combat, and repeated acceleration all make an empty bar more likely. Slow down before stamina is exhausted, allow recovery in a safe area, and avoid beginning a fight at the end of a sprint.
Mount restrictions and companion slots
A player cannot enter dungeons while mounted, so dismount before crossing a dungeon entrance and plan how the horse will be positioned outside. The horse can also coexist with another follower, allowing a player to ride while keeping a separate companion alongside. Check the follower controls if the second companion does not appear; the horse and the other follower use different interaction and equipment screens.

How follower XP is awarded
Funcom’s follower guidance says XP comes from killing enemies while the pet or thrall follows the player. Crafting, exploration, and other non-combat activities do not grant that documented follower XP. To level a horse, keep it active and with you during eligible combat instead of leaving it at home while you craft or travel alone.

What levels provide
Leveling grants stat increases and perks. The exact growth and base attributes vary with follower faction and tier, so a fixed “best horse build” is not reliable without a current, version-specific test. Compare the stats and perk choices shown for the horse you actually raised, then choose equipment and riding habits that complement those values.

Those labels do not currently establish a complete adult stat profile, and a saddle changes practical performance through its own speed, acceleration, defense, and maneuverability attributes.
Common problems and fixes
The Stable will not start
- Confirm that the input is a foal, not an adult Horse.
- Check that the feed is one of the items listed by the Stable recipe, such as Plant Fiber, Bark, Seeds, Vines, or a displayed special fodder.
- Remove extra items if the recipe interface is selecting the wrong combination.
- Read the displayed timer instead of assuming the standard 30 minutes; higher-tier recipes and server multipliers can change it.
The timer is different from a guide
The 30-minute Plant Fiber recipe and documented 45-minute higher-tier recipes are source-specific baselines. A private server can alter crafting time, and a mod can replace or add recipes. Use the timer in your Stable as the authoritative value for that server.
The adult horse looks different from the foal
This is expected under the documented system. The foal icon and regular, sturdy, or swift wording do not reliably predict the adult appearance. Ordinary recipe tables can resolve to four variants at 25% each, so appearance is an outcome of the recipe rather than a guaranteed foal label.
The horse cannot be mounted
- Equip a compatible saddle in the horse’s armor slot.
- Make sure the horse is finished in the Stable and has been removed as an adult Horse.
- Check that you are not inside a dungeon, where mounted entry is not allowed.
- Verify that the horse is your active follower and that another interaction prompt is not taking priority.
The horse is thrown or left behind
Watch stamina during travel and combat. Let it recover before another sprint, and keep the horse close enough to follow when you dismount. If it is carrying supplies, stop in a safe location before troubleshooting follower commands or changing equipment.
Which acquisition route should you use?

For a first mount, the ordinary foal and Plant Fiber route is the simplest documented path: it uses a common feed and gives you a clear 30-minute baseline. Once you understand your server’s recipe list, you can decide whether a higher-tier or cosmetic route is worth the extra materials and uncertainty.
A practical checklist
- Locate a foal in a confirmed spawn area for your map.
- Pick it up and return it safely to your base.
- Place the foal in a Stable.
- Add the feed shown by the recipe, beginning with Plant Fiber if you want the standard route.
- Record the timer displayed by your server.
- Collect the adult Horse when production completes.
- Equip a saddle in the horse’s armor slot.
- Choose a saddle based on speed, acceleration, defense, or maneuverability.
- Keep the horse with you during combat if you want documented follower XP.
- Watch stamina and dismount before entering a dungeon.
The key distinction is simple: find a foal, raise it in a Stable, then saddle the resulting adult horse. “Taming” and “breeding” are convenient player terms, but the documented mechanics are Stable production and recipe-based horse variants, not adult-horse capture or horse-to-horse genetics.
