New World using 100% CPU is not a diagnosis by itself. It can mean the game is producing a CPU-bound workload, another process is competing for time, Windows or a driver is outdated, files are damaged, or the processor is overheating and throttling. Measure CPU and GPU load, temperatures, clock speed, frame rate, and disk activity while reproducing the problem, then work through the fixes below in order.
Close background work, stop downloads, test full-screen and borderless modes, lower CPU-heavy graphics options, update Windows and video drivers, use High Performance power mode, verify Steam files, reduce startup software, and check cooling. Those steps address the causes New World Support identifies in its performance and launch guidance.

What high CPU usage means in New World
Task Manager may show NewWorld.exe using a very high percentage of CPU while you play. A high percentage is not automatically harmful: a game can use available processor time to prepare simulation, player movement, animation, audio, and draw calls. The important question is whether the load is accompanied by stutter, low frame rates, heat, clock-speed drops, or competition from another process.

Record the symptoms before changing settings. A CPU that is busy while temperatures and clock speed remain stable may simply be handling a CPU-limited scene. High temperature followed by falling clock speed indicates thermal throttling. High CPU from a browser, recording program, update service, or overlay points to background contention rather than a New World graphics setting. Low GPU utilization together with a saturated CPU often means the processor is limiting frame production; high GPU utilization with moderate CPU load points to a graphics limit instead.

Check whether your PC meets the current New World baseline
New World Support lists the following current Windows PC requirements and notes that specifications may continue to evolve. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a particular frame rate or eliminate CPU spikes; it only establishes that the system is in the supported range.

If your processor is below the listed minimum, lowering graphics options may not remove a CPU limit. If you have only 8 GB of memory, Windows may also page data to storage when other programs are open, producing hitching that feels like a CPU problem. Check the actual model in Task Manager’s Performance tab or Windows Settings before buying anything.
Measure the problem before changing hardware
Use a repeatable test: enter the same settlement, combat area, or activity, perform the same movement for several minutes, and note what changes when the stutter occurs. Task Manager is sufficient for a first pass.

- Open Performance and watch CPU utilization, speed, GPU utilization, memory, and disk activity. A sudden disk spike during a hitch can indicate loading or paging rather than a sustained CPU limit.
- Record the frame rate with the game’s counter or your normal monitoring tool. Compare a crowded area with a quiet one; a large difference suggests a scene-dependent workload.
- Record processor and graphics temperatures. Also note whether CPU clock speed falls when temperature rises. A temperature reading without clock speed or frame-time context cannot prove throttling.
- Repeat after each major change in the same location and activity. Otherwise, a different scene can make a fix appear to work when the workload simply changed.
Interpret the pattern rather than one number. High total CPU with normal temperatures and stable clocks is usually a workload or background-process question. High temperature plus falling clocks is a cooling question. High CPU from a non-game process is a contention question. High GPU with the CPU well below saturation is generally a graphics limit, not evidence that you need a faster processor.

Remove background contention first
Before changing New World settings, eliminate work that competes for processor time, memory, storage, or network bandwidth. New World Support specifically warns that other activity can adversely affect performance.
- Close browser windows and tabs that are not needed for the session.
- Exit game launchers, cloud-sync clients, update managers, chat clients, and software you are not using.
- Disable or pause recording tools, streaming software, performance overlays, RGB utilities, and hardware-monitoring overlays one at a time for testing. Keep a change log so you know which program was removed.
- Pause Windows Update, Steam, cloud backups, and other downloads until the test is finished. Resume them afterward rather than leaving security updates paused indefinitely.
- In Task Manager, investigate any process that remains near the top of the CPU list. Do not end a Windows process merely because its name is unfamiliar; search its publisher and use normal application settings first.
If New World becomes smooth after closing one application, re-enable programs individually to identify the conflict. A background program that causes trouble can often be updated, reconfigured, or excluded from automatic startup instead of permanently removed.
Test display mode and CPU-heavy game settings
Run a controlled A/B test rather than changing every option at once. In New World’s video settings, switch between full-screen and borderless or windowed mode, then repeat the same route or encounter. The better mode can vary with Windows, the driver, and other overlays.

- Write down your current preset, resolution, frame-rate limit, and notable effects.
- Switch from full-screen to borderless, or from borderless to full-screen, and restart the test location.
- Lower the overall video preset, then lower options that increase scene simulation or draw-call work. Apply one group of changes at a time so you can identify the useful setting.
- Keep resolution and activity constant while comparing frame rate, frame-time consistency, CPU load, and GPU load.
- Restore an option if it changes image quality without improving the measured bottleneck.
Lowering settings is not guaranteed to reduce CPU usage: some settings mainly reduce GPU work, and a faster render path can allow the CPU to prepare more frames. Judge success by smoother frame times, lower temperatures, or fewer stalls—not by a lower CPU percentage alone.

Use Windows High Performance power mode
Windows power plans can restrict processor behavior. New World Support states: “Try changing your Windows power settings to High Performance, as a lower setting can throttle your performance.”
- Open Settings and go to System > Power & battery.
- Set Power mode to Best performance if that is the label shown by your Windows edition. On systems that expose classic plans, open Additional power settings and select High performance.
- Play the same test scenario while connected to AC power on a laptop. Battery operation can use a different performance policy.
- After testing, choose a balanced mode for ordinary use if fan noise, heat, or battery life matters more than maximum sustained performance.
Update Windows and the graphics driver
Install pending Windows updates and the current driver for your NVIDIA or AMD graphics hardware. Driver packages can affect frame scheduling, shader compilation, and game compatibility. Use the manufacturer’s normal driver channel for your exact graphics model and Windows edition, then restart the PC before retesting.
Reset driver-control-panel overrides to their defaults during troubleshooting. Custom frame caps, forced synchronization, shader settings, or per-game profiles can interact with New World and make results difficult to interpret. Reintroduce custom settings only after the baseline test is stable.

Startup programs consume resources before the game launches and may continue running in the background. In Task Manager, open Startup apps, sort by status or impact, and disable only applications you recognize and do not need at sign-in. Do not disable security software, hardware controls, or a driver component without checking its function. Restart Windows, confirm the change, and test again.

Verify New World files in Steam
A damaged or incomplete game file can cause launch failures, repeated loading, or abnormal stutter. Steam’s file-integrity check replaces files that do not match its local record.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click New World, choose Properties, and open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Restart Steam and Windows if Steam reports that files were reacquired, then repeat the same performance test.
Verification does not change your hardware’s thermal limits or cure network congestion, so it is one step in the diagnosis rather than a universal fix.
Scan for malware and unwanted software
Unexpected CPU use from an unfamiliar process deserves a security check. Run a current, reputable antivirus scan, allow it to update its definitions, and review its detection and quarantine results. Do not assume that a high New World process percentage proves an infection; the evidence is the combination of process identity, behavior, and scan results.
Distinguish network lag from CPU stutter
Rubber-banding, delayed hit registration, disconnections, and sudden lag spikes are network symptoms. They can occur while CPU utilization looks normal and will not be fixed by buying a faster processor.

- Stop bandwidth-heavy downloads, streams, backups, and other network activity.
- Restart the modem and router, then allow them to reconnect fully.
- Test a wired Ethernet connection if practical. Compare the same activity over Wi-Fi and Ethernet.
- Verify New World files and update Windows and drivers if you have not already done so.
Network troubleshooting addresses connection quality; it does not lower CPU demand from a genuinely CPU-bound scene. Keep the two symptom groups separate when you evaluate a change.
Check for overheating and thermal throttling
New World Support includes checking for evidence that the computer is overheating in its performance checklist. Use your monitoring tool while reproducing the issue and look for a rising CPU temperature followed by reduced clock speed, worsening frame times, or a sudden drop in performance.
- Power the PC down and clear dust from intake filters, heatsinks, and fans using the manufacturer’s safe cleaning procedure.
- Confirm that case fans spin, vents are unobstructed, and a laptop is on a hard surface rather than fabric.
- Improve airflow by checking fan direction and cable obstruction. Make only changes you can perform safely.
- If measured temperatures still trigger throttling, consider a CPU cooler that is compatible with your processor socket, case clearance, and motherboard mounting system.
A cooler is a conditional purchase. It can help when temperatures or throttling are the measured limit, but it will not make normal high utilization from a CPU-bound workload disappear. Do not use a temperature threshold from another processor as proof of failure; compare behavior with the limits specified by your CPU manufacturer.

Upgrade only after the measurements identify a limit. A processor upgrade is relevant when the CPU remains saturated, temperatures are controlled, background processes are not responsible, and the game is consistently CPU-bound in the scenes you care about. More memory is relevant when RAM is nearly full and paging accompanies the hitching. A graphics upgrade is relevant when the GPU is the sustained bottleneck at your chosen resolution and settings. Faster storage helps loading and paging behavior only when storage throughput or latency is actually involved.
Compare your parts with New World’s current listed targets before shopping. The recommended target is an i7-10700K or Ryzen 5 3600X, 16 GB RAM, an RTX 2060 or RX 6600, and at least 2,500 MB/s disk-read speed; those figures are requirements guidance, not a promise of a specific frame rate. Models and game requirements can change, so verify compatibility, power, cooling, and current availability for your region before purchasing.
Collect evidence before contacting support
If the issue persists, make the problem reproducible and document it instead of guessing. Save screenshots or graphs showing CPU and GPU load, temperatures, clock speed, frame rate, memory, and disk activity during the stutter. Write down your Windows version, processor, graphics card and driver version, RAM amount, storage device, display mode, in-game settings, and which background programs were closed.
Create a DirectX diagnostic report by pressing Win+R, entering dxdiag, selecting Save All Information, and keeping the text file with your notes. Include the exact location or activity where the problem occurs, whether it affects full-screen and borderless modes, and whether a wired connection changes network symptoms. This gives support a reproducible case instead of an isolated 100% reading.
