The Map Room is Conan Exiles’ one-way fast-travel station: learn Cartographer from The Archivist in The Unnamed City, build the structure from four materials, attune the obelisks you want to use, then select one of those obelisks from the Map Room. Because travel does not work in reverse, choose your destination and your return plan before you leave.

What the Map Room does
The Map Room is a placeable building item that sends you from your base to an obelisk you have already attuned. It is not a free-form teleport system: the destination list consists of attuned obelisks, not arbitrary points that you choose on the map.

Attunement is a separate task from construction. Building the room does not automatically unlock every obelisk. You must travel to each obelisk, interact with it, and complete its attunement before that location can be selected from a Map Room.
The Conan Exiles Wiki’s Obelisk entry records 10 obelisks on the map (accessed 2026). Your practical coverage therefore depends on which of those locations you have personally attuned and how conveniently you can reach a Map Room from your base.
#1 Best Overall
- EXPLORE A VAST WORLD: Explore a giant world, from the burning desert in the south to the snow-capped mountains in the north. Discover ancient cultures, ruins, and dungeons
- SURVIVE: Stay warm, cool yourself down, drink and eat, weather scouring sandstorms, prevent your mind from being corrupted when exploring dark dungeons, and battle vicious monsters to stay alive
- BUILD: Harvest resources to craft tools and weapons, then build anything from a small home to entire cities piece by piece. Build walls, traps, elevators, and more, then deck out your creations with a wide variety of different furniture, crafting stations, and NPC guards
- DOMINATE: Wage war against your enemies, use siege weapons and explosives and see their walls crumble to dust, then unleash your savage fury in violent and brutal combat
- BUILD AN ARMY OF THRALLS: Capture NPCs, drag them back to your base, and use the Wheel of Pain to break their will. Turn them into archers, crafters, entertainers, and more for your settlements
The most important limitation is directionality. Funcom’s Conan Exiles Update 33 article (2018) states: “You can travel from the maproom to an obelisk, but not the other way around.” Treat the Map Room as a departure point, not as a return portal.
Unlock Cartographer at The Archives
You cannot craft the Map Room until you learn the Cartographer knowledge. This is a location-based unlock rather than a normal level milestone.
- Travel to The Unnamed City.
- Find The Archives.
- Speak with The Archivist to learn Cartographer.
- Open your knowledge list and confirm that the Map Room recipe is available.
The Cartographer knowledge page records that the Map Room can be crafted at any character level after the knowledge has been learned. In other words, do not wait for a particular character level if you already have access to The Archives and The Archivist.
If the recipe is missing, check the unlock before gathering a full set of ingredients. Confirm that you interacted with The Archivist rather than merely entering The Archives, then reopen the knowledge menu. The level requirement is not the blocker described by the knowledge entry; learning Cartographer is.
Map Room recipe and material requirements
Craft the Map Room with a Construction Hammer. The recipe produces one Map Room and the Conan Exiles Wiki records 3,170 crafting experience; that experience figure is published by the wiki as accessed in 2026, so verify it against the live game if your server version differs.
| Material | Quantity | What the quantity represents |
|---|---|---|
| Corrupted Stone | 200 | Required for one Map Room |
| Iron Reinforcement | 35 | Required for one Map Room |
| Alchemical Base | 75 | Required for one Map Room |
| Crystal | 50 | Required for one Map Room |
These are the complete listed recipe quantities. Keep the materials together before starting construction so that a partial haul does not leave you with an unusable footprint at your base. The recipe is for the Map Room itself; it does not include the cost of the building pieces you may need to prepare the room around it.

How to build the Map Room
1. Learn the knowledge first
Complete the Cartographer unlock at The Archives before making a dedicated materials run. Once the knowledge is learned, the recipe is available regardless of your character’s level, as recorded on the knowledge page.
2. Assemble the exact recipe
Collect 200 Corrupted Stone, 35 Iron Reinforcement, 75 Alchemical Base, and 50 Crystal. Put a Construction Hammer in your crafting setup and select the Map Room recipe. One craft yields one structure.

3. Prepare a safe, accessible site
Choose a location where you can approach the Map Room easily and where the surrounding construction will not block the placement preview. The structure is unusually large, so clear the intended footprint before you begin. A site that looks open from ground level may still fail if walls, roofs, or nearby decorations intrude into the placement area.
4. Place the structure before finishing the room
Place the Map Room first, then add decorative walls and roofing. The placement guidance for this structure is different from ordinary small building pieces: a roof can interfere with the initial placement, even though roof pieces can be added after the Map Room is down.
5. Test access before decorating
Walk around the newly placed structure and confirm that you can reach the interaction point. Check the approach from the direction you expect to use most often. It is easier to correct an awkward position before you spend time enclosing, roofing, or decorating the room.
How much space does it need?
The Map Room is large enough that the surrounding architecture should be planned around it rather than treated as an afterthought. The wiki says it fits in a room seven-by-seven building pieces and two walls high. Use that dimension as a planning target, not as a reason to build a tight shell before testing the actual placement preview.
Placement may be easier if you gain some elevation and look down at a steeper angle. Raising your viewpoint can make it easier to see the full footprint and align the structure with the floor. If the preview refuses to settle, change your elevation and viewing angle before dismantling nearby construction.
- Clear a seven-by-seven area as a starting footprint.
- Allow a two-wall-high room volume around the structure.
- Try a higher viewpoint and a steeper downward angle when aligning it.
- Place the Map Room before installing a roof.
- Only decorate after you have verified access and orientation.
The Map Room cannot be picked up directly into your inventory. If you need to move it, remove it and place a new one. The wiki notes that removal can return some or all of its materials, but the amount returned is not guaranteed in the supplied entry. Plan the first placement carefully rather than relying on relocation as a normal storage feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAttune an obelisk
Obelisks do not appear as usable destinations merely because you have built a Map Room. Each one must be attuned at the obelisk itself.
- Leave your base and travel to the obelisk you want to add.
- Interact with the obelisk to complete its attunement.
- Repeat the process for every obelisk you want available from the Map Room.
- Return to your Map Room and inspect the destination list.
Attunement is tied to the obelisk location, not to the construction of a particular Map Room. Once you have attuned a destination, use the Map Room at your base to select it. If a location is absent from the list, the first check is whether you actually interacted with that obelisk and completed the attunement step.

There are 10 obelisks recorded in the wiki’s map entry (accessed 2026), but you do not have to attune all of them to use the Map Room. Start with locations that serve the routes you make most often, then expand your list as you reach additional obelisks.
How to use the Map Room
Before activating it
Stand at the Map Room at your base or another safe, accessible location. Decide where you are going and how you will continue once you arrive. This check matters because the destination menu only offers obelisks you have already attuned.
Select a destination
Interact with the Map Room and choose one of the attuned obelisks shown in its destination list. Confirm the destination before activating the travel option. The Map Room then sends you to that obelisk.
Continue from the obelisk
After arriving, the Map Room has completed its job. It does not create a matching return point at the obelisk. Your next movement must use the ordinary routes and resources available to your character, so carry what you need for the journey you intend to make after arrival.
Plan the return before you leave
The one-way rule changes how you should use the structure. A Map Room is excellent for leaving a settled base quickly, but it is not a round-trip ticket. Funcom’s Update 33 wording is explicit that travel goes from the maproom to an obelisk and not from the obelisk back to the maproom.

- Confirm that the chosen destination is the obelisk you intended to use.
- Decide whether you will continue on foot, use another available route, or make a separate journey back.
- Bring equipment and supplies appropriate for the area you will enter.
- Avoid treating the Map Room as an emergency extraction method.
- If you are building more than one base, place Map Rooms where you can safely access them rather than assuming every obelisk can return you to the nearest one.
This planning step is especially important when the Map Room is placed in a remote outpost. The structure can send you out, but the destination itself does not send you back.

The placement preview will not fit
Start by clearing the full seven-by-seven target area. Then raise your viewpoint and look down at a steeper angle. The Map Room’s unusual size can make a placement that appears open from the ground fail when its complete footprint is considered.
A roof blocks placement
Remove or postpone the roof over the intended site. Roof pieces can be added after the Map Room has been placed, so use an open ceiling for the initial placement and finish the enclosure afterward.

The room is placed but difficult to use
Test the approach from several directions before decorating. If walls or other pieces obstruct access, correct the surrounding construction while the area is still unfinished. The Map Room itself cannot be picked up into inventory, so relocation requires removal and another placement.

Return to the obelisk and interact with it directly. Building the Map Room does not attune locations automatically. After confirming attunement, return to the Map Room and check the destination list again.
You expected to return to base
That expectation conflicts with the system’s design. The Map Room sends you from the room to an attuned obelisk only. Rework your travel plan before activating it and treat the destination as the start of the next leg of your journey.
Designing a useful Map Room area
A functional Map Room area needs three things: enough floor space for the structure, a clear approach for interaction, and a roof strategy that does not interfere with initial placement. The seven-by-seven, two-wall-high guidance gives you a practical starting envelope, while the placement preview determines the final position.
Place the structure before committing to a visual layout. Once its position is confirmed, you can add walls and roof pieces around it. This order avoids spending building materials on a shell that later prevents placement.
For a frequently used base, keep the Map Room in a location that is easy to find and reach. For a temporary or remote base, give equal attention to the return plan: the room is still a departure station, and its usefulness depends on whether you can safely continue from the chosen obelisk.

Final advice
Build the Map Room only after learning Cartographer, reserve its full footprint, and place it before adding a roof. Attune the obelisks you actually plan to use, then verify the destination at the Map Room before activating travel. The structure is powerful because it connects a prepared base to distant obelisks, but its one-way design means every trip should begin with a return plan.
