The available information confirms the current PC branch’s features and update history, but does not include hands-on testing or establish how either version performs. Which version of Conan Exiles does this review cover?
This is a review of the game’s current editions and documented features, not a firsthand performance review. Funcom released Conan Exiles Enhanced on Steam on May 5, 2026, as a free upgrade for current and future Steam owners. Its launch information said console versions would remain on Unreal Engine 4, with no immediate Enhanced release announced. The two platforms should not be treated as running the same build. Funcom’s Enhanced launch announcement and FAQ explain the platform distinction.

For PC players, the latest specific update established here is Enhanced update 2.2.0, announced September 15, 2026. It moves the game to Unreal Engine 5.8.2 and adopts Epic’s Iris networking system. Those are technical changes, not proof of improved frame rates, stability, or online quality. Funcom’s 2.2.0 announcement gives the update context; its updates index is the place to check for changes after that date.
What kind of survival game is it?
Conan Exiles is a survival sandbox built around gathering, crafting, progression, and constructing a place in a dangerous world. Its appeal depends substantially on what a player wants from that loop and where they play: solo, on a multiplayer server, or in a modded community. The Steam storefront’s individual player reviews include praise for the extra possibilities of modded servers, as well as criticism of the core loop. These are personal views, not a representative player survey or a professional review consensus. Steam’s game page provides the listing and player-review context.

- EXPLORE A VAST WORLD: Explore a giant world, from the burning desert in the south to the snow-capped mountains in the north. Discover ancient cultures, ruins, and dungeons
- SURVIVE: Stay warm, cool yourself down, drink and eat, weather scouring sandstorms, prevent your mind from being corrupted when exploring dark dungeons, and battle vicious monsters to stay alive
- BUILD: Harvest resources to craft tools and weapons, then build anything from a small home to entire cities piece by piece. Build walls, traps, elevators, and more, then deck out your creations with a wide variety of different furniture, crafting stations, and NPC guards
- DOMINATE: Wage war against your enemies, use siege weapons and explosives and see their walls crumble to dust, then unleash your savage fury in violent and brutal combat
- BUILD AN ARMY OF THRALLS: Capture NPCs, drag them back to your base, and use the Wheel of Pain to break their will. Turn them into archers, crafters, entertainers, and more for your settlements
Building and customization are another part of the proposition, but paid building sets and Bazaar purchases have drawn complaints from some individual reviewers. That feedback is a reason to examine the specific content and price on offer, not evidence that every player will find the purchases poor value. No current price or full breakdown of paid content is established here.
What the Enhanced upgrade changes—and what it does not
Steam: Enhanced is a free upgrade
For Steam owners, Enhanced is a free upgrade rather than a separate game purchase, according to Funcom’s launch announcement. The expansion Isle of Siptah is not included by virtue of that upgrade: access still requires ownership of the DLC, as stated on Funcom’s Enhanced feature page.

- Dominate the Exiled Lands - Carve out your piece of the Exiled Lands, taking it from other players if you must! Build siege weapons and use explosives to break down the walls of your enemy’s city.
- Survive in a Savage Land - Dress well or light a campfire to stay warm and make sure to cool yourself down in the heat. Hunt, cook, eat, and drink to stay alive. Build a shelter to weather scouring sandstorms.

- Play Together or Alone - Play alone locally or fight for survival and dominance in persistent multiplayer on public servers. You can also host your own server and invite others to join you in a world where you have full control of the rules and settings. Want to play with just handful of friends? Try co-op mode!
Consoles: still on the UE4 version
Funcom’s launch FAQ said console servers remained on Unreal Engine 4 and gave no immediate console Enhanced release date. That statement does not establish whether a later console upgrade has been announced; check the official updates index for current status. Do not assume that purchasing the console game provides the Steam Enhanced build.
What should you weigh before playing?
- Your preferred loop: The game centers on survival and crafting progression with a substantial building sandbox. The available player-review examples disagree about how satisfying the base loop is.
- Solo or community play: Modded servers are a notable part of the Steam community experience, but their quality and suitability depend on the server and its rules. Console and Steam are not interchangeable versions.
- Paid additions: Consider whether a particular building set or cosmetic is worth its listed price to you; individual complaints do not establish a universal value judgment.
- Current state: Update 2.2.0 documents an engine and networking change for Enhanced. It does not establish real-world performance or reliability on a particular machine or server.
Should you play Conan Exiles?
It is most promising for players drawn to a survival sandbox where crafting, building, and shared or modded community play are central. Whether its progression and combat satisfy you cannot be settled from storefront comments alone. Choose based on platform and edition first: Steam gets Enhanced, while the documented console versions remain UE4. If performance, combat feel, server reliability, or the exact value of paid content is decisive, the information available here does not verify those points; confirm the current listing and update status for your platform before purchasing.
