Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, identify the application that displays the error.
- Which program, game, installer, or management agent fails?
- What is the complete error message?
- Does it fail at startup, after an update, or only when opening a particular file?
- Is the affected application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Did the problem begin after an update, antivirus quarantine, cleanup, Windows upgrade, migration, or game installation?
- Where is the affected program installed?
config.dll is not one universal Windows component. The same filename can belong to Glary Utilities, an Altiris or Symantec Deployment Solution agent, MicroSurvey MapScenes Capture, or an unrelated game or application. The correct repair is therefore to restore the copy belonging to the program that cannot start.

What the config.dll error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because config.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because config.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading config.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “config.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The application or DLL config.dll is not a valid Windows image.”
These messages do not identify one universal file. Windows may be reporting that:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- The application’s private DLL is missing.
- The file exists but is damaged.
- A dependency required by
config.dllis missing. - The DLL belongs to the wrong release or architecture.
- Antivirus software quarantined it.
- The application installation is incomplete.
A file’s publisher, digital signature, product name, architecture, version, and installation directory matter more than its filename.

Identify the correct config.dll
Check the application folder
Find the shortcut for the program that fails, right-click it, choose Properties, and check the Target field. The executable’s folder is usually where its private DLLs are stored.
Open that folder in File Explorer and search for config.dll. If a copy exists, right-click it, select Properties, and inspect:
- Details: Company, Product name, File description, and file version
- Digital Signatures: signer and signature status
- General: file location and size
- Compatibility: whether the parent program is using compatibility settings
Do not assume the largest, newest, or first copy found is correct. Copies in unrelated application folders can be incompatible.
Locate copies with PowerShell
Open Start, type PowerShell, right-click Windows PowerShell, choose Run as administrator, and run:
Get-ChildItem -Path C: -Filter config.dll -File -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
Select-Object FullName, Length, LastWriteTime
The scan can take a long time. Do not move, rename, or overwrite any result yet.
A Glarysoft copy may be described as a Config Library and normally belongs inside the Glary application directory. An Altiris or Broadcom Deployment Solution copy belongs under the organization’s Deployment Agent folder. MicroSurvey MapScenes Capture has its own product-specific configuration DLL. These are separate products, not interchangeable sources.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the fastest and most likely solution when only one application fails.
- Close the affected program.
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Restart the application.
If there is no Repair option, open the application’s own launcher or updater and look for Repair, Verify, Update, or Check for files.
If repair is unavailable:
- Save application data and settings if the program offers that option.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the affected application and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the complete installer from the product’s official publisher or reinstall through its official launcher.
- Install the same product edition and architecture as before.
- Restart Windows and test it.
Do not copy config.dll from another computer or another program. A valid DLL from a different release can still produce an invalid-image, entry-point, or dependency error.
Success looks like: the application opens without the DLL message and performs the operation that previously failed.
If it fails again: check antivirus history before reinstalling repeatedly. The security product may be removing the file as soon as the installer creates it.

Fix 2: Verify game files through the launcher
If the error appears when starting a Steam game, let Steam restore the game’s own files.
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch the game again.
Verification checks whether the game files are installed correctly and can replace missing or corrupted files. Do not use a config.dll taken from another game, even if both games display the same message.
For another launcher, use its equivalent Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair command. If no such command exists, reinstall the game from that launcher’s official installation source.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security or another antivirus product may quarantine a legitimate application DLL. It may also remove a genuinely unsafe replacement.
- Open Start and type Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the detection associated with the application or
config.dll. - Check the detected file’s path, publisher, and source.
- Restore or allow it only if the file came from the trusted application installer and its publisher and signature are credible.
- Repair or reinstall the application afterward.
Microsoft warns that allowing a real threat can expose the device. If the file came from an unofficial DLL download site, do not restore it. Remove the replacement and obtain the entire application from its publisher.
Success looks like: the application starts and the file remains present after a restart.
If the file disappears again: update the application and antivirus definitions, then contact the application vendor or administrator. Repeatedly allowing an unknown DLL is not a safe repair.
Fix 4: Match the architecture and dependencies
A 32-bit application needs the DLL build intended for that application. A 64-bit application needs its matching 64-bit build. Do not mix files from System32 and SysWOW64, and do not treat those folders as general DLL storage.
Recommended Free Tools
To check the program architecture:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Start the affected application if possible.
- Select Details.
- Right-click the column headings and enable Select columns if needed.
- Look for architecture information, or check the application’s documentation and installer options.
“The specified module could not be found” can also mean Windows found config.dll but could not load a dependency. Repair the parent application first. Only install a Visual C++ Redistributable package when the application’s publisher specifically requires it, and choose the architecture that matches the application. Different older runtime releases can remain installed side by side.
Success looks like: the error changes to a normal application window or disappears after the application repair and required prerequisite installation.
If it still fails: the DLL may be damaged, blocked, or incompatible with that application release. Reinstall the parent program rather than trying additional random runtimes.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is affected
SFC and DISM are not general repair tools for third-party application DLLs. Use them when several unrelated programs fail, Windows features are malfunctioning, or SFC reports protected system-file corruption.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC scans and repairs protected Windows files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling Glary Utilities, a game, MicroSurvey, or an enterprise agent that owns a private config.dll.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time while the real application installation remains damaged. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds, while repair is performed by the full version; reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when its private DLL is missing.
Success looks like: SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files, and the original program starts after a restart.

If Windows reports corruption it cannot repair: run Windows Update, restart, and review Microsoft’s recovery options. Do not manually replace a third-party config.dll with a Windows system file.
Fix 6: Install Windows updates and check drivers
If the error began after a Windows upgrade or hardware change, update Windows before investigating more deeply.
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
A driver rarely explains a private application DLL by itself, but a damaged graphics or device installation can prevent a game or hardware utility from launching.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Prefer the hardware manufacturer’s official driver when Windows cannot find a suitable one. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers its free scan identifies, while installation is completed by the full version; review every proposed driver rather than accepting unrelated changes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Success looks like: the application launches after the driver restart.
If it does not: return to repairing the application. Do not assume a driver update can recreate a missing private DLL.
Fix 7: Handle older enterprise and legacy software carefully
An Altiris or Broadcom Deployment Solution error may mention:
ConfigException occured 'ConfigDll could not find the config toolbox'
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That is an enterprise-agent problem, not a normal Windows consumer DLL problem. Use your organization’s approved agent redeployment, upgrade, or repair procedure. The expected folder and compatible binaries depend on the Deployment Solution installation.
Broadcom documents a narrow scenario where a matching config.dll can be copied from a working managed environment. That exception applies to the documented enterprise case only. It does not justify copying a Glarysoft, MicroSurvey, or game DLL between PCs.
Older products may also require their original vendor-specific installer. Do not force a current runtime or a newer application build onto a legacy product unless the vendor supports that combination.
Fix 8: Scan for malware when the path is suspicious
The filename alone does not prove that config.dll is malicious. Investigate the path and publisher instead.

Why downloading config.dll is usually the wrong fix
Random DLL download pages can provide:
- The wrong product’s binary
- An incompatible version
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A damaged or modified file
- A file that creates DLL hijacking or malware risk
They also leave the original installation incomplete, so the same error may return after the next update. Never place an arbitrary download in System32, SysWOW64, or beside an unrelated executable.
regsvr32 config.dll is not a generic solution. regsvr32 works only with DLLs that expose registration procedures such as DllRegisterServer. Ordinary application libraries may not support registration, and an unsuccessful registration does not repair a missing dependency.
Use the official installer, repair function, game launcher, or enterprise deployment system instead.
When the error started after a recent change
If the problem began immediately after a program installation, driver update, or system modification, System Restore may help when a restore point exists.
- Press Win+R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the problem.
- Review the affected programs.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore normally preserves personal files but rolls back system settings, installed programs, and system files.
If Windows will not boot normally, open Windows Recovery Environment and choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore. Use recovery options carefully and preserve important data first when possible.

FAQ
Is config.dll a Windows system file?
Not universally. It is generally a private file installed by a particular third-party application, not a DLL that every Windows installation should have in System32 or SysWOW64.
Can I copy config.dll from another PC?
Only in a narrowly documented enterprise case where the vendor specifically instructs administrators to copy a matching file. For normal applications and games, repair or reinstall the owning program.
Should I install Visual C++ to fix this error?
Only if the affected application requires a particular Visual C++ runtime. config.dll errors are not automatically Visual C++ errors.
Why does the file exist but still fail?
The file may have a missing dependency, incorrect architecture, damaged contents, blocked access, or a version mismatch. Reinstall the parent application first.
