Use the Confluence: Journey’s Start server pack that matches the current Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge client release, then run it as Host & Play for occasional sessions or as a dedicated server for a persistent world. The project’s current CurseForge listing identifies a recent server artifact named ServerPack_1.2.4-3.12. Keep every player and the server on the same modpack, Minecraft, and NeoForge versions.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Terraria servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
What Confluence: Journey’s Start actually is
Despite the “Terraria modpack” wording some players use when searching for it, the current project listing identifies Confluence: Journey’s Start as a Minecraft 1.21.1 modpack running on NeoForge. The official Confluence: Otherworld installation page identifies Journey’s Start as the official modpack and points players to a separate server-pack download.

CurseForge reported 175,967 project downloads in 2026 and listed a project update on August 24, 2026. Those figures and dates describe the listing at that point; they are not a guarantee that a future file will use the same build number. Before installing, check the project’s current Minecraft and NeoForge metadata and select the corresponding server file.
Files and versions you need
- Client pack: Install the official Journey’s Start distribution referenced by the Confluence: Otherworld installation page.
- Server pack: Download the separate server-pack file from the project’s recent files. The currently listed artifact is
ServerPack_1.2.4-3.12. - Runtime: Use the Minecraft and NeoForge versions shown for the client release you selected. Do not assume that the newest server archive works with an older client pack.
- Players: Every person joining the world needs the same modpack release and matching Minecraft/NeoForge version.
The server pack is not a second client installer. It contains the files intended to run the world without opening the normal graphical client. Keep the client installation and server directory separate so that server configuration, logs, and world saves are easy to back up.

Choose how you will host
Your best hosting method depends on whether the world must remain available when its owner is offline.
| Method | Best for | Availability | Networking effort | Control and cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Host & Play | Short co-op sessions with a small group | Normally ends when the host stops playing | Usually the least setup | Uses the host’s computer and connection; limited server-side control |
| Self-hosted dedicated server | A persistent world on a home computer or separate machine | Can remain online independently of a player session | May require firewall rules, router forwarding, and a stable LAN address | You control world files, configuration, backups, and update timing; hardware and bandwidth are your responsibility |
| Managed hosting | Players who want a public endpoint and provider-operated infrastructure | Designed for continuous operation, subject to the provider’s service | The provider usually handles the public endpoint and much of the network setup | Recurring fee and provider support in exchange for less infrastructure work |
The project page currently suggests Wabbanode as a partnered option for a quick setup. That page does not establish current pricing, uptime, RAM allocation, or NeoForge compatibility details, so confirm those items directly before paying for a plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInstall the matching client pack first
- Open the official Confluence: Otherworld installation instructions and follow the Journey’s Start installation path.
- Record the Minecraft version and NeoForge version shown for the release you installed. For the current project metadata, these are Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge.
- Launch the client once and confirm that the modpack reaches its main menu without missing-mod or loader errors.
- Give every player the same release identifier. A client that merely has “the same mods” can still fail if one file, configuration, or loader version differs.
Download and unpack the server pack
- Open the Journey’s Start project’s recent files on CurseForge.
- Select the server-pack artifact that corresponds to your client release. The currently listed file is
ServerPack_1.2.4-3.12. - Create a dedicated folder for the server, separate from your client’s instance directory.
- Extract the archive into that folder without renaming individual mod, configuration, or library files.
- Keep the downloaded archive until the server has started successfully and you have made a backup of the initial configuration.
If the project lists a newer server pack after this article’s publication, use the newer file only when the client release and loader metadata match. Mixing a server archive from one Journey’s Start release with clients from another is a common cause of connection rejection and startup crashes.

Set up a dedicated world
1. Decide whether to create or reuse a world
The dedicated-server configuration supports both an existing world and automatic world creation. Reusing a world is appropriate when you are moving from another host or restoring a backup. Automatic creation is simpler for a new group, but choose the world settings before inviting players because changing them later can require a new world or manual file work.
2. Configure world-generation values
The documented configuration supports a world path, automatic creation, seed, world name, difficulty, and world path. Set the world location to a folder that is included in your backup plan. If you specify a seed, preserve it in your notes; the same seed does not recreate later player progress, builds, inventories, or explored areas.
3. Set player access and server identity
Choose a maximum player count, password, message of the day, and secure mode before opening the server to the internet. The documented maxplayers setting accepts values from 1 through 255. Use a password for a private friends-only world, and make the message of the day identify the pack release or any temporary rules players need to know.

4. Launch the server process
Windows, Linux, and macOS use different server-file locations and launch procedures. Follow the launch file or binary included with the server pack and the operating-system instructions for that release. Do not start the graphical client as a substitute for the dedicated process: the dedicated process is what keeps the world available independently of a player session.
On Linux, run the server inside tmux or screen so it continues after you log out. Detach from the session rather than closing the terminal abruptly, and return to that session when you need to issue a save, shutdown, or administrative command.
Network the server for friends
Local network play
Players on the same home network can usually connect to the host’s private LAN address and configured port. Assigning the host machine a static LAN address, or reserving its address in the router, prevents the connection target from changing after a reboot.

Internet play
The documented default Terraria server port is 7777. If friends are connecting from outside your home, allow that port through the host firewall and forward it from the router to the server machine. The public address belongs to the router; the forwarding rule must point to the server’s private LAN address.
Some networks use carrier-grade NAT or block inbound connections. In that situation, a correct port-forwarding rule may still be unreachable from the internet. A managed host with a public endpoint, or a networking method supported by your provider, may be more practical than changing router settings repeatedly.

Validate the installation before inviting everyone
- Start the server and wait for its normal ready state before attempting to join.
- Connect from a second player account using the host address and configured port. Testing from another device is preferable to testing only from the host machine.
- Confirm that the client reaches the intended world, can move and interact normally, and does not report missing or mismatched mods.
- Have the second player disconnect and reconnect. This catches authentication, port, and world-loading problems that a single first join can miss.
- Stop the server through its normal shutdown path, restart it, and verify that the world and player progress remain present.
If the test fails, change one variable at a time. Replacing the entire configuration or updating only half of the players’ files makes it difficult to identify the cause.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Troubleshooting the common failures
The server will not start
- Check that the server pack matches the Minecraft and NeoForge versions installed by the clients.
- Confirm that the archive was fully extracted and that its launch files and libraries remain in the expected relative locations.
- Read the first error in the server log rather than the final shutdown line; later errors are often consequences.
- If you changed a configuration value, restore the last known-good copy and reapply changes individually.
Players receive a mod or version mismatch
- Compare the exact Journey’s Start release on the server and every client.
- Compare Minecraft 1.21.1 and the NeoForge release metadata, not just the launcher profile name.
- Do not copy a client-only configuration or extra client mod into the dedicated server directory.
Players on the internet cannot connect
- Verify that the server is listening on the same port shown in its configuration; the documented default is 7777.
- Allow the server process through the host operating system’s firewall.
- Forward the port to the server’s current private LAN address and confirm that the address has not changed.
- Test from a network outside the host’s home connection. A successful LAN test does not prove that internet routing works.
- If the router uses carrier-grade NAT, ask the internet provider whether inbound forwarding is available or use a host that supplies a reachable endpoint.
The world disappears or rolls back
- Stop the server cleanly before copying or moving world files.
- Check that
worldandworldpathstill point to the intended save. - Keep dated backups of the world directory and server configuration before updating the pack.
- After an update, start with a backup copy first so a migration problem cannot overwrite the only working save.
Updating without breaking the world
When a new Journey’s Start release appears, treat the client pack, server pack, Minecraft version, and NeoForge version as one bundle. Announce downtime, stop the server cleanly, copy the world and configuration to a dated backup, then replace the server files with the matching release. Update every client before reconnecting players. If the new server fails, restore the previous server files and backup rather than repeatedly editing a partially updated installation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Keep your own record of the release identifier, world name, seed, port, password distribution, and any configuration changes. That record shortens recovery time when the host machine is replaced or the provider migrates the instance.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Self-hosting is the better fit when you already have a machine that can remain powered, understand router and firewall configuration, and want direct access to world files and update timing. It avoids a hosting subscription but makes you responsible for backups, operating-system maintenance, bandwidth, and recovery.
Managed hosting is useful when the group needs a persistent public server without maintaining a home machine. Confirm the provider’s support for Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge, whether you can upload the Journey’s Start server pack, how backups are retained, and how world files can be downloaded if you leave. The project listing’s Wabbanode suggestion establishes a possible partner route, not a guarantee of those technical or commercial terms.
Recommended setup for most small groups
For a one-evening session, install the matching client pack and use Host & Play. For a world that should survive the host’s logout, use the matching dedicated server pack on a machine that can stay online, set a password and a sensible player limit, retain the default port unless your network requires another, and complete a two-player join-and-restart test before sharing the address. Choose managed hosting when uptime and a public endpoint matter more than having direct control of the hardware.
