This is the archived answer guide for the February 5, 2024 edition of NYT Connections, puzzle #239. Start with the four color-ordered hints below if you want a nudge; the complete groups and answers follow.

Hints for Connections #239

Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four that share a common thread. The February 5, 2024 guide describes four mistakes as the limit before a game ends, and notes that yellow is generally more straightforward while purple is trickier. These are general gameplay details reported by Fortnite Insider.

In the puzzle’s color order, the clues are:

  1. Yellow: “Power-ups and pauses”
  2. Green: “Religious Leadership Roles”
  3. Blue: “Iconic music legends”
  4. Purple: “Sounds like places!”

Those clues are listed in WordHint’s archived guide.

How the trickiest groups work

“GIVE ME A BREAK!”

BROTHER, LORD, PLEASE, and SHEESH can all be used as exasperated reactions or appeals for patience. The connection is how the words can function in conversation, rather than a shared literal meaning.

City homophones

The last group relies on sound-alikes: DELI echoes Delhi, NIECE echoes Nice, ROAM echoes Rome, and SOUL echoes Seoul. The city spellings make the intended wordplay clearer than the puzzle words alone.
