What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A console’s CPU handles game instructions and simulation, its GPU renders images and effects, its memory provides working space while games run, and its storage holds installed games and feeds data to the system. These specs help explain a console’s capabilities—but no single number promises a particular game’s resolution, frame rate, or visual effects.
What does a console CPU do?
The CPU, or central processing unit, executes instructions. In games, that can include game logic, world simulation, character and object behavior, and coordinating work needed to prepare each frame. CPU capability can affect how much simulation a game performs and how consistently it prepares frames.
Core count and clock speed are clues, not direct frame-rate predictions. Architecture, the game’s workload, software optimization, and how work is scheduled all shape results. For example, Xbox Wire’s 2020 Series X technical article lists an eight-core Zen 2 CPU running at 3.8 GHz, or 3.6 GHz with simultaneous multithreading (SMT). Sony’s CFI-21XX PS5 manual lists an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 2 CPU. These are manufacturer specifications for different platforms, not a cross-console performance test: Xbox Series X technical details and PS5 CFI-21XX instruction manual.
What does a console GPU do?
The GPU, or graphics processing unit, renders a game’s images. Its work includes drawing geometry, shading surfaces, and producing lighting and other visual effects. More graphics capability can give developers room to target higher resolution, add demanding effects, or maintain a frame-rate target—but those goals compete for resources.

Ray tracing, for instance, simulates how light moves and bounces from surfaces. Sony describes it as a PS5 capability, while Xbox’s Series X technical article describes hardware-accelerated ray tracing. A supported feature does not mean every game uses it, or uses it at the same settings or performance level. The result depends on the game and its implementation: Sony’s PS5 architecture explanation and Xbox Series X technical details.
How to read a TFLOPS figure
TFLOPS is a theoretical measure associated with compute throughput, not a universal score for graphics quality or game performance. GPU architecture, memory behavior, software, game engine, resolution, and visual settings all matter. A comparison based only on TFLOPS cannot establish which console will run a particular game better.

What does console memory mean?
System memory, often called RAM, is temporary working space for the console and running software. Games use it for active program state, data, and assets. It is different from storage: installed games remain on an SSD or flash storage when the console is off, while memory serves as working space during operation.
Capacity is only one part of memory performance. Bandwidth describes how quickly data can move between memory and processors. Manufacturers may also reserve or divide memory resources for different uses, so raw capacity figures are not always directly comparable.

Xbox Wire lists 16 GB of GDDR6 memory for Series X, with different published bandwidth figures for 10 GB and 6 GB portions. Sony’s CFI-21XX PS5 manual lists 16 GB of GDDR6. Nintendo’s US Switch 2 specification page identifies its custom NVIDIA processor but does not state a system-memory capacity; that figure should not be inferred from the page’s other specifications. Sources: Xbox Series X technical details, PS5 CFI-21XX instruction manual, and Nintendo Switch 2 technical specifications.
What does storage affect in games?
Storage holds installed games and other files. Its capacity determines how much can stay installed at once. Its speed and the console’s input/output (I/O) path can affect how quickly data is read, loading times, and how a game streams assets as you move through its world. More capacity mainly gives you more room; faster data access matters when the game and platform make use of it.

PlayStation’s 2020 PS5 architecture article describes the SSD and custom I/O as designed to reduce loading barriers and support fast asset streaming. That is a design goal, not a promise of zero loading in every game. Xbox Wire’s 2020 Series X article lists a 1 TB custom NVMe SSD and I/O throughput of 2.4 GB/s raw or 4.8 GB/s compressed using custom hardware. Current advertised capacities vary by model and platform:
| Platform and source | Published storage details | What to bear in mind |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 CFI-21XX manual | 825 GB or 1 TB custom SSD, depending on model; M.2 expansion connector | The figures describe the identified model family. Sony says manual information may change without notice. |
| Xbox Series X current page and 2020 Xbox Wire article | The current page describes 1 TB or 2 TB SSD choices. The 2020 article lists a 1 TB custom NVMe SSD. | Do not treat the 2020 article’s capacity as the specification for every current Series X model. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 US specification page | 256 GB UFS internal storage | Some internal storage is reserved for system use, so the full capacity is not available for games. |

Adding storage to PS5
Sony supports commercially available M.2 SSDs that meet its requirements for use as PS5 game storage. Not every M.2 NVMe drive qualifies, so check Sony’s current specifications—including capacity, interface, speed, and heatsink requirements—before buying. A PS5 game on USB extended storage must be moved to console storage or an M.2 SSD to play. See Sony’s PS5 M.2 SSD installation and requirements.
Adding storage to Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo specifies a microSD Express card slot supporting cards up to 2 TB. Cards that are not compatible with microSD Express can only be used to copy screenshots and videos from Nintendo Switch; they are not equivalent for Switch 2 game-storage expansion. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 technical specifications before choosing a card.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What do resolution and frame-rate specs actually promise?
Resolution is the number of pixels rendered; frame rate is the number of images displayed each second. Higher resolution can show more detail, while a higher frame rate can make motion and input response feel smoother. A game may trade resolution, visual effects, or frame rate against one another to meet its goals.
A console’s supported display output is not the same as a promise that every game renders at that resolution and frame rate at the same time. Nintendo’s Switch 2 page lists TV output modes including up to 4K at 60 fps and 120 fps at selected lower resolutions. Those are output specifications, not claims about each game’s native rendering mode. Xbox Wire’s 2020 Series X article describes a platform target of 4K at 60 FPS and support up to 120 FPS, while noting that resolution and frame-rate decisions are best left to game developers. Neither statement guarantees those results in every title. Sources: Nintendo Switch 2 technical specifications and Xbox Series X technical details.
How should you compare console specs?
Start with the games you want to play. Published specifications describe hardware capabilities, but they do not establish a title-by-title winner. For a useful comparison, check:
Quick Recap
- Game-specific modes: Look for the developer’s resolution and frame-rate modes, and the display requirements for using them.
- Visual effects: Separate support for a feature such as ray tracing from whether a particular game uses it and what trade-offs it makes.
- CPU and GPU in context: Consider the game’s workload and optimization rather than comparing core counts, clock speeds, or TFLOPS alone.
- Memory configuration: Compare capacity and bandwidth cautiously because architecture and system reservations differ.
- Storage and expansion: Check the exact model’s capacity, available space, loading behavior in the games you care about, and compatible expansion options.
- Your setup and habits: Your display, game library, handheld or docked use, and willingness to delete or reinstall games may matter more than a headline hardware number.
