Final Fantasy V builds flexibility around jobs: characters master job-specific abilities and keep them when they switch jobs. Final Fantasy VI keeps characters’ signature commands and uses equipped magicite to teach spells, enable summons, and sometimes add a stat bonus at level-up. In short, V lets you reshape a character’s role; VI lets you customize a character’s magic and growth without erasing who they are.
How progression works in Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy V tracks character level and job level separately. After battles, characters earn experience points and ability points (ABP): experience raises character level, while ABP advances the currently selected job. As a job gains levels, the character learns abilities associated with it.

The defining feature is persistence. Learned job abilities remain available after a character changes jobs, and abilities learned from different jobs can be combined. A character can therefore take a new job for its current role and equipment while bringing a previously learned ability along.
This makes progression cumulative and player-directed: you choose which jobs to develop, then decide how to combine their abilities. Not every combination is useful, however; some can waste an ability slot or limit a character’s options. These detailed mechanics are described in the PlayStation Final Fantasy Anthology manual.

How progression works in Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy VI gives characters distinctive battle commands, such as Locke’s Steal, Edgar’s Tools, Sabin’s Blitz, Cyan’s SwordTech, and Gau’s Rage. These identities remain part of how characters fight. Magicite adds another layer of customization rather than replacing every character’s progression.
A character equips one piece of magicite at a time. After battles, magic points (AP) advance spell learning according to the rates listed for that magicite. Learning progress is retained if the magicite is changed or removed; when progress reaches 100 percent, the character has learned the spell. The PlayStation Final Fantasy Anthology manual gives Cure’s acquisition rate as x5 for one magicite example.

Equipped magicite can also provide access to a summon in battle, subject to the game’s restrictions. Some magicite grants a permanent attribute increase when its wearer gains a level, so the choice can shape both spell learning and character growth.
Final Fantasy V and VI compared
| Progression question | Final Fantasy V | Final Fantasy VI |
|---|---|---|
| Where role identity sits | The selected job defines the character’s current role and job-specific command. | Characters retain distinctive commands; magicite adds spell and summon customization. |
| How skills are learned | ABP raises a job’s separate level and unlocks its abilities. | Battle-earned AP advances spell learning at the equipped magicite’s listed rates. |
| What persists after a change | Learned job abilities remain available across job changes and can be combined. | Spell-learning progress remains when magicite is changed or removed, and learned spells are retained. |
| How equipment shapes growth | The consulted PlayStation manual describes job levels, ABP, and transferable abilities; it does not describe an equivalent magicite-based level-up bonus. | Some magicite grants a permanent attribute increase when its wearer gains a level. |
| The main player decision | Which job to use now, and which mastered abilities to pair with it. | Which magicite to equip for spells, summons, and a possible level-up bonus alongside character-specific commands. |
The table’s detailed mechanics come from the PlayStation Final Fantasy Anthology manual. Square Enix’s Pixel Remaster announcements support the broad distinction—job customization in V and magicite customization in VI—but do not establish that every mechanic is identical across all editions. Square Enix’s Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster announcement describes a job system for players to choose and master; its Final Fantasy VI announcement describes magicite as a way to customize learned abilities, spells, and summons.

Which system offers more flexibility?
They offer different kinds of flexibility. V is the more overtly modular system: job mastery unlocks a transferable toolkit, and changing jobs changes a character’s current role. VI’s customization is layered onto more individually defined characters: magicite directs spell learning, may affect a level-up, and can provide a summon, while signature commands remain character-specific.
Choose V’s model if you enjoy building roles through experimentation and carrying abilities between jobs. VI’s model suits players who want to tailor magic and growth while keeping each character’s battle identity distinct.

The mechanical detail here is based on the PlayStation release of Final Fantasy Anthology. Square Enix announced the V Pixel Remaster for Steam and mobile in North America and Europe on November 10, 2021, and published its VI Pixel Remaster pre-purchase announcement on February 10, 2022. Those announcements corroborate the systems at a high level; they do not confirm that every manual detail applies unchanged to every later port.
