Control: Ultimate Edition is worth considering if you want a story-driven action-adventure built around paranormal abilities, environmental destruction and exploration—not just a sequence of gunfights. The edition bundles the base game with both expansions, but the best version to buy depends on your platform and whether you need to carry over an existing save.

What kind of game is Control: Ultimate Edition?

Control is a third-person action-adventure from Remedy Entertainment. You play Jesse Faden, who arrives at a secretive New York agency and becomes its director during an otherworldly invasion. Shooting is part of the combat, but the game also centers on supernatural abilities, adjustable loadouts, exploration and environments that react to the action. Remedy’s official game page describes those core elements.

Its unusual setting and story-driven presentation are a major part of the appeal. Expect stretches of exploring the agency and piecing together its mysteries between combat encounters. If you prefer a tightly linear shooter with little time spent investigating its world, that rhythm may be less appealing.

What does Ultimate Edition include?

The Ultimate Edition listing on the Epic Games Store includes the main game and both expansions: The Foundation and AWE. Remedy’s 2024 annual report also records the release of the two paid expansions and an Ultimate Edition in 2020. In practical terms, this is the bundled game-and-expansions package; confirm that the exact platform listing you are considering names both expansions, because store pages, discs and subscription entitlements are not necessarily identical.

AWE also connects Control to Remedy’s wider storytelling. Control Game Director Mikael Kasurinen described it as a way to tell stories spanning multiple games and experiences in Remedy’s 2020 AWE announcement.

What do the reviews say?

Metacritic’s Control: Ultimate Edition page displayed an 85 critic score based on 31 critic reviews when observed on October 8, 2026. That is a dated snapshot, not a permanent or platform-neutral verdict: the page also separates platform aggregates, and scores can change as reviews are added. Check the platform-specific result if you use an aggregate to compare versions.

The review conversation surfaced there includes praise for the game’s unusual fiction, experimentation, combat and story, as well as discussion of ray tracing and performance modes. Those themes help explain its appeal, but an aggregate page is not a substitute for reading individual reviews—especially if exploration and environmental storytelling are decisive for you.

Remedy’s 2024 annual report says Control had sold over 4.5 million units and received more than 20 Game of the Year awards by the end of 2024. Those are Remedy’s reported figures, not independent verification. The report also cites more than EUR 100 million in “net revenue”; Remedy defines that figure as shareable revenue between the company and a publishing partner, excluding taxes and platform fees. Which version should you buy?

Compare the actual platform listing and build, not just the words “Ultimate Edition.” The key distinction for console owners is between a PS4 or Xbox One game run through backward compatibility and the native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version. Mode figures below are targets in Remedy’s February 2, 2021 next-generation launch announcement, not current performance testing.

Version or mode Documented target or behavior What to consider
Native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, Performance Mode 60 fps target, 1440p render resolution and 4K output, according to Remedy’s February 2, 2021 launch announcement. Choose this mode if the frame-rate target matters more than ray tracing. These are launch-era targets, not a guarantee for every later patch, display or setting.
Native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, Graphics Mode 30 fps target with ray tracing, 1440p render resolution and 4K output, according to the same 2021 announcement. This mode trades the higher frame-rate target for ray tracing.
Native Xbox Series S Remedy support documents Performance Mode only: a 60 fps target, 900p render resolution and 1080p output, without ray tracing. Do not assume the Series X graphics options apply to Series S.
PS4 or Xbox One version played on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility Remedy support says saves carry forward when using the backward-compatible version. This is distinct from transferring that save into the native next-generation version.
Nintendo Switch Remedy support describes the edition as a cloud version, with progress stored in the cloud. It also says the game can be played offline after downloading the digital game and updates. It is not a like-for-like local-install comparison with PC or console builds. Check current storefront availability and terms.

Will your old save transfer to the native next-generation version?

Not according to Remedy support. A PS4 or Xbox One save carries forward when you play that version through backward compatibility on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, but it does not transfer to the native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version. Remedy attributes the limitation to the newer Northlight Engine version used by the native builds. If continuing an existing save matters, check which build you are launching before upgrading or switching editions. Remedy support.

What should you check before buying?

  • Confirm the listing is for the platform and build you want: native next-generation or backward-compatible where applicable.
  • Verify that the specific listing includes the base game, The Foundation and AWE.
  • If you have an existing save, decide whether you need the backward-compatible version rather than the native next-generation build.
  • Check the current price, physical stock and regional listing directly with the retailer; no current price or inventory is established here.
  • For Switch, check current cloud-version availability and storefront terms before purchase.

Remedy documented physical releases for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in March 2021, and announced planned PS4 and Xbox One physical editions for October 20, 2020. Those historical releases do not establish present stock or the accuracy of a current regional listing. Remedy Annual Report 2024.
