Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The fix depends on where input stops. A controller may be visible to Windows or Steam but still be exposed through an input mode the game does not support, selected as the wrong device, blocked by a launcher or anti-cheat system, or overridden by another virtual controller. Press Win+R, run joy.cpl, and test the buttons and axes before changing game settings.
“Controller detected” only proves that some part of Windows or the launcher recognized a device. It does not prove that the game is receiving usable button and stick input. The fastest way to find the failing layer is to close the game, press Win+R, enter joy.cpl, select the controller, choose Properties, and use the Test tab. If the buttons and axes respond there, focus on the controller’s input mode, launcher, game settings, and software conflicts. If they do not, fix the connection, driver, firmware, or hardware before changing in-game settings. Microsoft recommends this Windows-level test before troubleshooting game configuration. Microsoft’s controller guidance describes the same approach.

Quick diagnosis: input working in joy.cpl but not in one game usually indicates a game setting, XInput/DirectInput mismatch, Steam Input configuration, launcher privilege issue, anti-cheat restriction, or duplicate virtual controller. Input failing in joy.cpl indicates a problem below the game layer.
1. Test the controller outside the game
- Exit the game completely. If it has a separate launcher, close that too.
- Open
joy.cplfrom Start search or the Run dialog. - Select the intended controller. If several devices appear, note their names and disconnect the ones you are not testing.
- Open Properties and select Test.
- Press every button, move both sticks, and test the triggers or axes. Look for movement in the corresponding indicators.
If the controller is listed but nothing changes on the Test tab, the game is not the immediate problem. Continue with the physical connection and driver sections below. If the controller is absent from joy.cpl, Windows may have detected a USB, Bluetooth, or virtual-device entry without exposing a usable game controller.

For a Steam game, Steam also has controller-testing and calibration tools. Depending on the current Steam interface, look under Steam > Settings > Controller, or open the game’s controller layout and testing options from its Library page. Steam’s own troubleshooting material also suggests restarting Steam, checking that the Steam Overlay is available, and using Big Picture mode when diagnosing Steam Input configuration. These steps are diagnostic rather than universal fixes; a game can still reject the resulting input path. Steam’s controller troubleshooting guide has the current testing guidance.
2. Recheck USB, wireless, and Bluetooth connections
For a USB controller
- Disconnect the controller, wait a few seconds, and reconnect it.
- Plug it directly into the PC rather than through a monitor, docking station, or USB hub.
- Try a different USB port. If possible, test both a rear motherboard port and a front-panel port on a desktop.
- Try a known-good cable that carries data. A cable can provide power for lights or charging while its data wires are damaged or absent.
- Test the controller on another computer if one is available.
A light turning on does not establish that Windows is receiving controller data. Microsoft’s hardware troubleshooting guidance recommends trying another USB port, bypassing an intermediate hub, checking the cable, and testing the device on another PC where possible. Microsoft’s input-device troubleshooting steps apply to this isolation process.
For a Bluetooth controller
- Charge the controller or replace its batteries.
- Confirm that Bluetooth is enabled in Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Make sure the controller is in pairing mode and paired to the intended PC, not another nearby computer, console, phone, or tablet.
- In Windows Bluetooth settings, remove or forget the controller, restart Bluetooth or Windows, and pair it again.
- Keep the controller within normal range and temporarily move USB 3.0 storage devices, hubs, and receivers away from the Bluetooth antenna or adapter.
- Test the controller over USB. If wired input works consistently while Bluetooth does not, the game is probably not the first thing to repair.
USB 3.0 equipment can interfere with nearby Bluetooth connections, and distance, pairing state, battery level, and Bluetooth drivers can also cause intermittent input. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance covers re-pairing, range, interference, and connection reliability.
3. Update firmware and repair the Windows device
Install pending Windows updates, then use the controller manufacturer’s official software to check for controller firmware. Avoid unsigned driver-download sites and generic “driver updater” downloads; controller drivers should come from Windows, the PC maker, or the controller manufacturer.
Xbox controllers
Microsoft documents Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility for the Xbox Wireless Controller and supports controller management through the Xbox Accessories app. A compatible USB-C cable may be required when connecting the controller for management or firmware updates. Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Controller documentation lists the supported PC connection and accessory information.
DualSense controllers
Sony supports USB and Bluetooth use for the DualSense controller on 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11 and provides the PlayStation Accessories app for updating controller software on PC. A successful connection does not mean every DualSense feature will work: feature availability depends on the game and the connection method, and some features require USB or explicit game support. Sony’s DualSense PC support page explains those limitations.

For a controller that uses USB-C, a USB-C data cable for controller can be useful for both a wired test and firmware management. Confirm that the cable supports data rather than charging only; also confirm that your particular controller actually uses USB-C before buying a replacement cable.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand relevant categories such as Human Interface Devices, Bluetooth, and Sound, video and game controllers.
- Look for the controller or an unknown device with a yellow warning icon.
- Open its Properties and note any error code.
- Use Update driver first. If the device remains broken, use Uninstall device, restart Windows, and let Windows reinstall it.
- After restarting, use Device Manager’s Scan for hardware changes if the device does not return automatically.
Microsoft documents uninstalling a malfunctioning device, restarting Windows, and scanning for hardware changes as standard remedies for several Device Manager errors. Review Microsoft’s Device Manager error-code guidance when a warning icon or code is present.
After those official steps, you may optionally use Outbyte Driver Updater to scan for outdated or missing Windows drivers, while keeping the controller manufacturer’s support process as the first choice.
4. Check whether the game is receiving the right input API
Windows can recognize a controller through one input path while a game listens through another. Many PC games are built around XInput, Microsoft’s API for reading compatible controller buttons, sticks, triggers, vibration, and related state. Other controllers or applications may expose DirectInput, native PlayStation support, Steam Input, or a virtual gamepad instead. Microsoft’s XInput documentation explains what applications read through that API.
This is why a PlayStation or generic controller can be visible in joy.cpl yet ignored by a game that expects XInput. The reverse can also happen: a game may support a controller natively, but a remapping layer changes the device identity or produces duplicate inputs.
Use one input path at a time
- If the game supports the controller natively, try the native path first.
- If you use Steam Input, configure it for that game and retest without another remapper running.
- Do not stack Steam Input, DS4Windows, manufacturer mapping software, and another virtual-controller utility unless the game’s documented setup specifically requires it.
- For the first clean test, exit remappers and virtual-gamepad tools rather than adding more software.
Steam Input can translate or remap some devices, but it is not a universal compatibility layer. Steam identifies anti-cheat systems that block emulated input as a known incompatibility for some non-Steam games. If the title blocks virtual input, use its supported native controller mode; do not attempt to bypass anti-cheat protections. Steam’s non-Steam controller compatibility guidance lists these limitations.
5. Configure Steam or the game launcher
Steam games
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Open the game’s controller settings or right-click the game and choose Properties, then Controller.
- Check whether the game is using Steam’s default controller setting, Steam Input enabled, or Steam Input disabled. The exact labels can change as Steam’s interface changes.
- Apply a layout for the intended controller, then launch the game and press a controller button at the title screen or pause menu.
- Retest with the opposite Steam Input setting if the game supports both native and translated input—but test only one mode at a time.
Restart Steam after changing the setting. If the desktop interface does not apply the layout correctly, Big Picture mode can help verify the per-game configuration. The Overlay may need to be enabled for some Steam Input workflows.
Non-Steam games
You can try Library > Add a Game > Add a Non-Steam Game, but select the correct game executable or compatible launcher. Adding a shortcut does not guarantee that Steam Input will reach the game. Steam notes that non-Steam functionality varies substantially and can fail when:

- the game or its anti-cheat blocks emulated input;
- an independent launcher requires administrator privileges while Steam does not;
- the game has no Steam Overlay support;
- the game cannot be added to the Steam library in a usable way; or
- the game’s own launcher controls how the executable is started.
If the game runs elevated and Steam does not, the two processes may not communicate correctly. Where the publisher permits it, test with a consistent privilege level rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings. Do not run everything as administrator as a routine fix.
Other launchers
Xbox PC app, Epic Games Launcher, Ubisoft Connect, EA app, and a game’s independent launcher can each affect how input is passed to the title. Check that the intended launcher is open, that the game is started through the configured path, and that no second launcher or overlay is taking control.
For an Epic-launched third-party game, Epic says its support team does not provide technical support for external-device problems in third-party titles and directs players to the game developer or publisher. Epic’s support policy for external devices is useful when the controller works in Windows but fails only inside a particular game.
6. Check the game’s own controller settings
Once joy.cpl confirms that the controller produces input, open the game’s controls or input menu and check all of the following:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Controller, gamepad, or joystick input is enabled.
- The selected device is the controller rather than keyboard and mouse.
- The game is waiting for you to press a controller button before switching input modes.
- Bindings exist for the buttons, sticks, triggers, and menu controls.
- The title supports your controller type or input API.
- The correct player or device is assigned.
- A maximum-controller limit has not been reached.
- The controller is connected before the game starts if the title does not support hot-plugging.
- A title-specific launcher remains open when required.
- A recent patch or settings reset has not changed the input mode or bindings.
Some games support only selected controller types or only XInput, while others offer native support for specific devices. Do not assume that a controller working in Windows—or even in another game—proves compatibility with this title.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Remove duplicate devices and perform a clean retest
Conflicting devices are a common reason for a game to show keyboard prompts, assign the wrong player, or accept input from only one controller. For one controlled test:

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Close the game and its launcher.
- Disconnect other controllers, steering wheels, fight sticks, USB adapters, and unnecessary Bluetooth input devices.
- Exit remappers, virtual-gamepad tools, and controller overlays one at a time.
- Reconnect only the controller you want to test.
- Confirm its buttons work in
joy.cpl. - Restart the launcher and then the game.
- Press a controller button at the game’s first input screen.
- If it works, restore other devices and background tools one at a time until the conflict is identified.
This process distinguishes a bad controller from a duplicate-device problem. It also prevents a remapper from hiding the result of a native-controller test.
Symptom-to-fix matrix
| Symptom | Likely layer | Best next test |
|---|---|---|
| No light, no charge, and no Windows detection | Power, cable, battery, or hardware | Try fresh batteries or a known-good data cable, another USB port, and another PC. |
Controller appears in Windows, but buttons do not move in joy.cpl |
Driver, firmware, connection, or hardware | Reconnect directly, update firmware, repair the Device Manager entry, and test on another PC. |
Buttons work in joy.cpl but not in one game |
Game settings, API mismatch, launcher, or conflict | Test another game, inspect the title’s controller settings, and check native input versus Steam Input. |
| Steam sees the controller but a non-Steam game does not | Steam Input, privilege mismatch, unsupported launcher, or anti-cheat | Add the correct executable, use one input layer, and check whether the title blocks emulated input. |
| Bluetooth works briefly and then disconnects | Pairing, interference, power, or driver | Forget and re-pair, reduce USB 3.0 interference, update Bluetooth drivers, and test wired. |
| The game shows keyboard prompts despite controller input | Native support or input-mode switching | Press a controller button, inspect the game’s input mode, and disable competing remappers. |
| Only one of several controllers works | Device order, player assignment, or game limit | Disconnect extras, reconnect in the desired order, and inspect the game’s player/device menu. |
When replacement or support is justified
Replacement is reasonable when the controller fails the Windows Test tab on more than one computer, disconnects with multiple known-good cables or ports, has a failed battery or charging connection, or is no longer supported by its manufacturer. It is not the first step when the controller passes joy.cpl and works in other games.
If you do need a supported replacement, choose according to the controller ecosystem and the games you actually play. An Xbox Wireless Controller for PC is documented by Microsoft for Windows 10 and Windows 11 with Xbox Accessories support. Sony documents USB and Bluetooth PC connectivity for the DualSense controller for PC. Neither statement means that every PC game supports every feature or input mode; title-level compatibility still matters.
Escalate to the game developer when the controller passes Windows tests and works elsewhere but fails in one title after a clean, correctly configured launch. Include the controller model, Windows version, USB or Bluetooth connection method, launcher, game title, whether joy.cpl registers input, and whether another game or PC behaves differently.
Windows 10 support note
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That means free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided through the normal support lifecycle. This does not prove that Windows 10 caused a particular controller failure, and it does not mean every controller stops working on Windows 10. It does mean that moving to a supported Windows version may become relevant when a controller manufacturer or game no longer tests or supports the older system. Microsoft’s Bluetooth support documentation contains the lifecycle note.
Avoid these “fixes”
- Do not edit the registry as a routine controller fix.
- Do not download unsigned drivers from random driver sites.
- Do not install several remappers at once.
- Do not bypass or disable anti-cheat protections to force emulated input.
- Do not assume a powered or illuminated controller is transmitting data.
- Do not buy a replacement before checking
joy.cpl, another USB port or cable, and the game’s supported input modes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my controller detected but not working in a PC game?
“Detected” means Windows or the launcher has identified a device, not that the game is receiving valid button and stick input. Test the controller with joy.cpl. If its buttons and axes work there, investigate the game’s supported input API, Steam Input, launcher settings, controller mode, and conflicts. If they do not, repair the connection, firmware, driver, or hardware first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will Steam Input fix every controller compatibility problem?
No. Steam Input can help translate or remap some controllers, but some games support only native input, some expect XInput, and some anti-cheat systems block emulated input. Use one input path at a time and follow the game’s supported controller setup.
Do I need to buy a new controller?
Not necessarily. If the controller works in joy.cpl and another game, buying hardware is unlikely to fix a title-specific setting, API mismatch, launcher problem, or anti-cheat restriction. Consider replacement only if it fails Windows testing across multiple cables, ports, or computers.
The Bottom Line
Start with joy.cpl. If the controller fails there, repair the cable, connection, firmware, driver, or hardware. If it passes there, stop treating it as a basic detection problem and check XInput or native support, Steam Input, launcher privileges, game settings, anti-cheat restrictions, and duplicate devices—one input path at a time.
