Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Steam Controllers can all work with Steam, but compatibility depends on the game, connection method, and whether the game uses Steam Input. Before choosing a controller, check support for the specific game you want to play; Steam’s compatibility labels distinguish full support from partial support, which can mean occasional keyboard or mouse use or mismatched button prompts.
How Steam controller compatibility works
A controller can be recognized by Steam without being fully supported by every game. Some games provide their own controller support; others rely on Steam Input to translate inputs and allow custom bindings. Valve says that in games implementing Steam Input, players can use any one of more than 300 supported controllers (Steam’s June 26, 2024 announcement).
Compatibility is therefore game-specific. A controller may work in one title and need configuration or a different connection in another. Support labels and details on the Steam store page or in the game’s library information are a better guide than assuming that a controller supported by Steam will behave identically everywhere.
Check a game before choosing a controller
- Open the game’s Steam store page or library details. Find its controller support information and any controller-family or Steam Input API details. Steam describes these support indicators in its controller documentation.
- Read the support level carefully. Full support is the clearest indication that the game can be played with a controller throughout. Partial support can mean that a launcher, text entry, or an occasional interaction still requires a keyboard or mouse, or that on-screen button prompts may not match your controller.
- Check the connection requirement for your controller. For PlayStation controllers, Steam notes that some games or libraries may support USB but not Bluetooth. Confirm the title’s requirements rather than assuming wireless and wired behavior are equivalent.
- Confirm operating-system compatibility. Steam’s Steam Controller page lists its connection options and notes a macOS caveat for some Steam titles.
- After connecting, test the game’s inputs and prompts. If controls are missing or prompts look wrong, review that game’s controller settings and Steam Input layout. Steam Input supports configurable bindings and per-game controller configuration.
Which controller families are worth considering?
| Controller family | What to know for Steam | Best compatibility check |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox controllers | Xbox controllers are a widely used Steam option. Steam’s 2024 snapshot reported that 59% of Steam controller sessions used Xbox controllers; this is a historical publisher-reported figure, not a test of a particular model or a guarantee for every game. | Check the game’s support details and verify the exact controller model and connection method. |
| PlayStation controllers | Steam identifies PlayStation support as a relevant game-level category. Some games or libraries may support USB but not Bluetooth. | Check the game’s controller information and whether it supports your intended wired or wireless connection. |
| Nintendo Switch controllers | Steam documents support for the Switch Pro Controller through Steam Input. How it behaves can still depend on the game and configuration. | Look for game-specific controller support and test or configure the Steam Input layout. |
| Steam Controller | Steam’s official page lists puck wireless, Bluetooth, and USB connection options for devices running Steam or Steam Link, and notes a macOS caveat for some Steam titles. | Check the official page’s requirements and the game’s support details for your operating system and connection. |
Valve encourages developers to use Steam Input API or SDL3 to support Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch controller families broadly. That guidance does not mean every game supports every feature or connection method. If features such as gyro or trackpads matter to you, check whether the game recognizes them or whether you can configure them through Steam Input.

What Steam’s controller-use figures tell you—and what they don’t
In a June 26, 2024 update, Steam said daily average controller use had grown from approximately 5% of all Steam sessions in 2018 to as much as 15% at the time of the announcement. Steam also reported that approximately 42% of controller sessions used Steam Input. Its listed controller-session categories were 59% Xbox, 26% PlayStation, and 10% Steam Deck. Those categories do not add up to 100%, so they should not be read as an exhaustive breakdown. These figures describe Steam’s 2024 snapshot; they are not current 2026 measurements, and they do not establish which controller is best for your games.

Choose by your games, connection, and preferred features
- Start with the games you actually play. Check their support information before settling on a controller family.
- Match the connection to the title and device. USB, Bluetooth, and proprietary wireless options are not interchangeable in every setup.
- Decide whether mismatched prompts matter. A game may accept controller inputs but display prompts for a different controller family.
- Check the features you want. If you care about gyro, trackpads, or custom bindings, verify game support or Steam Input configuration rather than assuming those features work automatically.
- Verify the exact model and operating system. A family-level compatibility label does not confirm every model, connection, or OS combination.
