How to cook fish without burning it
Cook fish in a pan on your ship or at a campfire. The timing reference lists about 40 seconds for a regular fish to reach the cooked state and 90 seconds for a trophy fish. Should you cook fish to sell or eat?
If you plan to sell it
Cooking is worthwhile if you can monitor the pan: the cooked state earns more than raw, but leaving the fish too long can leave you with the sharply lower burnt value. If you cannot safely watch it, selling raw avoids that risk.
If you plan to eat it
Cooked fish restores more health than raw fish. Rare also cautions that eating raw fish can make your pirate vomit, so cooking is useful for both healing and avoiding that drawback. Rare’s fishing guide directs players to sell catches to a Hunter’s Call representative at the nearest Seapost. The Sun Wrecker reference also lists Sovereigns as a buyer. What determines the payout?
- Species: fish types have different base rewards, so a Sun Wrecker’s figures do not apply to every fish.
- Size: trophy fish are listed at higher base rewards than regular fish in the Sun Wrecker example.
- Cooking state: cooked is worth more than raw in the official guidance; undercooked is a separate state, and burnt is worth much less.
- Sale modifiers: emissary values are separate from base rewards and should not be mistaken for the standard price.
