Coolify vs Dokploy: Which Self-Hosted PaaS Is Better?

Coolify is the safer default for most Compose-based self-hosting; Dokploy stands out for Swarm, broader integrations, alerts, volume backups, and advanced team workflows.

For most solo developers and small teams deploying Docker Compose to one or a few servers, Coolify is the safer default. Its self-hosted edition has no license fee and provides the full feature set, while its workflow is centered on connecting your own servers and deploying applications, databases, and services through a web control plane.

Choose Dokploy instead when native Docker Swarm clustering, broader Git and build integrations, built-in metrics and alerts, arbitrary Docker-volume backups, preview deployments, or more advanced team permissions are decisive. Neither product removes infrastructure responsibility: your team still owns the servers, workload security, data, secrets, networking, and recovery process.

What you are actually comparing

Coolify and Dokploy are self-hosted platform-as-a-service products. Each places a web control plane over Docker-based application and database deployments on infrastructure that you provide. Instead of manually repeating container, reverse-proxy, certificate, environment-variable, and deployment tasks on every server, you connect the server to the platform and manage projects from one interface.

Both products document a similar baseline: a graphical interface, Docker Compose support, APIs and command-line access, multi-node operation, Traefik integration, databases, monitoring, backups, rollbacks, environments, scheduled jobs, and teams. The meaningful differences appear at the edges of that common baseline: which source-control and build systems are supported, how clustering works, how deep the operational tooling goes, and how much control a team needs over permissions and deployment workflows.

For a game studio or hobby developer, that means either platform can run a Compose-defined API, matchmaking service, leaderboard, authentication backend, analytics worker, or database. The platform is not a game-server performance benchmark, however. CPU scheduling, network latency, disk I/O, GPU access, kernel tuning, and regional availability still depend on the servers and network you choose.

Deployment sources and build systems

Coolify’s input model

Coolify’s documented source options are GitHub and Git Generic repositories. It also accepts Docker images, Docker Compose projects, and Nixpacks-based builds. That combination suits a project already organized around Compose files or a conventional repository that can be detected and built with Nixpacks.

The practical advantage is a relatively direct path from repository to running service. A small team can keep its game API, worker, cache, and database definitions in Compose, connect the server, and use the platform for deployment and reverse-proxy integration instead of maintaining bespoke shell scripts.

Dokploy’s broader provider list

Dokploy lists GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, and Gitea, alongside Docker and Docker Compose. For automated builds, it lists Nixpacks, Heroku Buildpacks, Paketo Buildpacks, and Railpack. That is materially broader if your organization hosts code outside GitHub or needs to standardize on one of those buildpack families.

Dokploy’s extra provider coverage matters most when the source system is already chosen. Moving a repository solely to gain a platform feature can create unnecessary migration work; if your team is on GitLab, Bitbucket, or Gitea, native support removes that friction at the outset.

How to decide on integrations

  • Use Coolify when GitHub, a generic Git repository, Docker, Compose, and Nixpacks cover your existing workflow.
  • Use Dokploy when GitLab, Bitbucket, or Gitea is a first-class requirement, or when Heroku, Paketo, or Railpack buildpacks are part of your build standard.
  • For either platform, confirm how private-repository credentials, image registries, submodules, and build-time secrets will be handled before moving production deployments.

Topology: one VPS, several servers, or a Swarm cluster

One-server deployments

A single virtual private server is the simplest starting point for either product. The control plane connects to the machine, and Docker workloads run on that customer-provided host. This arrangement is appropriate for a prototype, a small community service, or a noncritical game backend where a single-server outage is acceptable.

Single-server simplicity does not eliminate operational duties. You still need operating-system updates, firewall rules, SSH protection, DNS, resource monitoring, persistent-data backups, and a tested recovery plan. A platform can automate deployment, but it cannot make one physical or virtual host redundant.

Multiple remote servers

Both platforms document multi-node support. Multiple servers let you separate workloads—for example, placing a public API on one host and a database or background worker on another—or move different environments to different machines. The benefit is isolation and capacity planning, not automatic high availability. You must still design networking, storage, failover, and backup behavior for the specific topology.

Docker Swarm

Dokploy’s comparison specifically lists Docker Swarm clustering. Coolify’s entry is marked limited. If your architecture depends on Swarm services, replicas, rolling updates, or Swarm scheduling semantics, Dokploy is the clearer fit based on the documented capability matrix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not choose Swarm merely because it sounds more scalable. A small Compose application may gain complexity without gaining useful resilience. First identify whether you need service scheduling across nodes, replica management, or a Swarm-native deployment process; if not, a simpler multi-server arrangement may be easier to operate.

Day-two operations: monitoring, alerts, backups, and rollbacks

Monitoring and alerts

Both products list monitoring. Dokploy additionally highlights CPU, RAM, and disk monitoring with automated alerts. Those signals are useful for game backends, where a sudden player surge can exhaust memory or disk before an application-level error appears.

Monitoring is only valuable when someone owns the response. Define thresholds, notification destinations, and an escalation path before production traffic arrives. A dashboard that nobody watches is not an availability strategy.

Database and volume backups

Backups appear in the common feature set for both platforms. Dokploy specifically calls out backups for arbitrary Docker volumes, which is important when game state, uploaded assets, or generated data live outside a database.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Regardless of platform, distinguish a backup from a restore you have actually performed. Document where backup data is stored, how credentials are protected, how long copies are retained, and how to rebuild the control plane if its own host fails. Test restoring a representative database and a representative volume before calling the design recoverable.

Rollbacks and scheduled jobs

Both platforms list rollbacks, environments, and scheduled jobs. Rollbacks help when a new container image or configuration breaks an API; scheduled jobs can cover maintenance tasks such as cleanup, report generation, or periodic data processing. A rollback does not undo an irreversible database migration, so schema changes still require an application-specific migration plan.

Updates and control-plane maintenance

The self-hosted operator remains responsible for installing updates, monitoring the platform, and backing up and restoring the control plane. Cloud editions transfer much of that control-plane work to the vendor, but they do not move your application containers, databases, secrets, or persistent files onto vendor-managed workload servers.

Team permissions, environments, and governance

Both products list teams and environments, allowing a project to separate development, staging, and production work. This is useful when several people deploy the same game service or when a studio needs a safe staging environment for a new build.

Dokploy’s comparison highlights advanced permissions and preview deployments. Advanced permissions can matter when developers should deploy to staging but only release managers can change production. Preview deployments are useful for testing a branch or pull request without replacing the shared staging environment.

Coolify still covers the basic team workflow, but the cited comparison does not establish equivalent depth for every permission, preview, single sign-on, or SCIM scenario. If auditability or identity integration is a requirement, verify the exact role and authentication behavior in the edition you intend to run rather than assuming that a shared “teams” label means identical governance.

Pricing: license cost versus total operating cost

Coolify

Coolify’s pricing page lists self-hosted as “Free forever” with “Full access to all features,” no feature restrictions, community support, and automated or self-managed updates. “Free” refers to the platform license; you still pay for the servers, storage, bandwidth, backups, and other infrastructure that run the control plane and workloads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coolify Cloud starts at $5 per month for up to two connected servers, with $3 per month for each additional server, according to the pricing page accessed on October 14, 2026. These prices are subject to change. Cloud hosting covers the control plane, while your team continues to provide and secure the servers running applications and data.

Dokploy

Dokploy’s Cloud versus Self-Hosted documentation lists Self-Hosted (OSS) as free and Cloud from $4.50 per month. The same page lists a Hobby plan at $4.50 per month per server and a Startup plan at $15 per month for three servers. These figures were listed on October 14, 2026 and should be rechecked before purchase.

Dokploy states that self-hosted updates are manual and Cloud updates are automatic. The two editions share the same deployment engine, including Docker and Traefik integration, the API, and core features. As with Coolify, the subscription is for the control-plane service; it is not a replacement for workload-server, storage, bandwidth, or security costs.

What the price difference really buys

  • Self-hosting minimizes recurring platform fees but makes your team responsible for control-plane uptime, upgrades, backups, and recovery.
  • Cloud editions charge for convenience around control-plane hosting, automatic updates, and availability work. They do not absolve you from securing application servers or protecting workload data.
  • For a small project, the infrastructure bill can exceed the platform license. Compare the operational time saved, not just the monthly control-plane price.

Which platform fits common gaming scenarios?

Solo developer with a Compose stack

Coolify is the practical default when one person wants a free self-hosted platform, Docker Compose, and a broad one-click-service workflow. It keeps the recurring platform cost at zero while preserving access to the documented feature set. The trade-off is that you must operate the Coolify instance yourself unless you choose its Cloud edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Small studio already using GitLab, Bitbucket, or Gitea

Dokploy has the stronger documented fit because those providers are listed directly. Native integration can simplify webhook, credential, and repository management compared with adapting an unsupported or generic path.

Backend that must run on Docker Swarm

Choose Dokploy when Swarm is a real architectural requirement. Its comparison lists Swarm clustering, while Coolify’s support is marked limited. Validate storage and networking behavior for stateful services before production; clustering a database is a separate design problem from clustering stateless containers.

Team needing metrics, alerts, and volume backups

Dokploy is the better match when its highlighted CPU, RAM, and disk metrics, automated alerts, arbitrary-volume backups, or preview deployments are decision-critical. Those features address operational workflows that can otherwise require separate tooling and procedures.

Team prioritizing the lowest platform cost

Coolify’s free self-hosted edition is the clearest choice when the team is comfortable maintaining its own control plane and does not need the Dokploy-specific capabilities above. Remember that “free” does not include the VPS, storage, backups, or engineering time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Team that wants managed control-plane maintenance

Use either vendor’s Cloud edition when automatic control-plane updates, hosted availability, and vendor support are worth the subscription. Keep the application-server security model explicit: your team still owns workload operating systems, secrets, firewall rules, DNS, and persistent data.

A decision process that avoids an expensive switch

  1. Inventory the workload. List every container, Compose file, database, Docker volume, scheduled task, external registry, and environment. Mark which components are stateful and which can be recreated.
  2. Map source and build requirements. Record the Git provider and build method for each service. If any service depends on GitLab, Bitbucket, Gitea, Heroku Buildpacks, Paketo, or Railpack, treat native support as a selection criterion.
  3. Choose the topology deliberately. Decide whether one server is sufficient, whether workloads should be split across nodes, or whether Swarm scheduling is genuinely required.
  4. Define recovery before deployment. Specify database and volume backup destinations, retention, encryption, restore owners, and the steps for rebuilding the control plane and reconnecting servers.
  5. Set the team boundary. Decide who can deploy, who can change production, how staging and preview environments are created, and whether the documented permission model meets your audit needs.
  6. Price the complete system. Add control-plane fees, servers, storage, bandwidth, backup storage, monitoring, and the engineering time required for updates and incidents.
  7. Pilot with a representative service. Deploy a noncritical API plus a stateful component, exercise a rollback, trigger a resource alert if available, and perform a real restore. A static hello-world container will not expose the operational issues that matter.
  8. Write the handover documentation. Record credentials ownership, server access, DNS changes, deployment conventions, backup locations, and emergency contacts so the platform does not depend on one person.

Responsibilities neither platform removes

  • Server security: patch the operating system, restrict SSH, configure firewalls, rotate credentials, and limit exposed ports.
  • Secrets: protect API keys, database passwords, signing keys, and service-account credentials outside source control.
  • Data durability: back up databases and volumes independently of the container lifecycle and verify that copies can be restored.
  • Networking and DNS: manage domains, certificates, private connectivity, ingress rules, and any region-specific latency requirements.
  • Capacity planning: watch CPU, memory, disk, and network headroom as player counts and build artifacts grow.
  • Application correctness: test migrations, compatibility, rate limits, graceful shutdown, and rollback behavior; a platform rollback cannot repair an incompatible data schema.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

The documented comparisons establish feature and pricing differences, not a winner on raw speed or reliability. There is no controlled benchmark here for deployment duration, container overhead, memory consumption, uptime, or game-session latency. Any claim that one product is inherently faster or more stable would go beyond the available evidence.

The strongest conclusion is therefore workflow-based: Coolify offers the simpler, lower-cost default for Compose-oriented self-hosting, while Dokploy earns the preference when its documented integrations, Swarm support, operational alerts, volume backups, preview deployments, or advanced team controls solve a requirement you already have.

Final recommendation

Start with Coolify for a solo project or small team deploying Docker Compose to one or a few customer-provided servers, especially when eliminating the platform license is important and you can operate the control plane. Select Dokploy when your repository providers or buildpacks are broader than Coolify’s listed integrations, when Docker Swarm is central to the architecture, or when its monitoring, alerts, arbitrary-volume backups, preview deployments, and permission controls justify choosing a more feature-specific workflow. In both cases, treat the platform as an orchestration layer—not as a substitute for secure servers, tested backups, and disciplined production operations.
