The supported way to enable HTTPS for Uptime Kuma is to place Kuma behind a reverse proxy or Cloudflare Tunnel. The proxy (or tunnel) owns your public hostname and TLS certificate, then forwards traffic to Kuma’s normal HTTP service on port 3001. Configure WebSocket forwarding, because Kuma is WebSocket-based, and keep port 3001 private when the proxy is your only public entry point.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Use a domain or subdomain such as status.example.com; the official guide does not support publishing Kuma in a normal path such as example.com/uptimekuma.

Uptime Kuma normally listens for HTTP on port 3001. HTTPS is terminated before that listener: a reverse proxy receives connections on ports 80 and 443, obtains and renews the certificate, and proxies requests to http://127.0.0.1:3001. The browser therefore sees an HTTPS site while Kuma can continue using its standard internal HTTP service.
This arrangement is important for two reasons. First, Kuma’s official documentation recommends SSL (HTTPS) with a web server to avoid man-in-the-middle attacks on a public network. Second, Kuma is built around a WebSocket connection rather than ordinary page requests. A proxy that forwards only regular HTTP may show the dashboard but leave live status changes, login state, or notifications unreliable.

The official Reverse Proxy wiki explains: “Unlike other web apps, Uptime Kuma is based on WebSocket.” Its Nginx example consequently uses HTTP/1.1 plus the Upgrade and Connection headers. See the complete guidance at Uptime Kuma’s official Reverse Proxy wiki.
Prepare the hostname, server and Kuma listener
Use a dedicated hostname
- Create a DNS record such as
status.example.compointing to the public IP address of the machine running your proxy, or to the endpoint required by your tunnel. - Use a subdomain or a separate domain rather than a path below another site. The normal subdirectory form
example.com/uptimekumais not supported by the official guide. - Make sure the hostname resolves correctly from an external network before requesting a certificate.
Keep Kuma on its normal internal port
Run Kuma on port 3001 unless your installation deliberately changes it. Bind or firewall that port so it is reachable by the proxy but not exposed directly to the Internet. Public access should arrive at the proxy or tunnel on the HTTPS hostname.
Allow certificate validation traffic
For a proxy obtaining certificates directly, ports 80 and 443 must reach that proxy and DNS must point to it. Caddy and Traefik can automate certificate issuance; Nginx and Apache can use Certbot with Let’s Encrypt. A Cloudflare Tunnel supplies TLS without requiring a separate public reverse-proxy service.
Choose a way to terminate HTTPS
| Option | Certificate handling | Separate reverse proxy required | WebSocket handling | Can port 3001 stay private? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Caddy | Automatic acquisition and renewal when DNS and ports 80/443 are correctly configured | Yes; Caddy is the proxy | Handled by reverse_proxy |
Yes |
| Nginx | Certbot with Let’s Encrypt can populate the configuration, redirect HTTP to HTTPS and renew certificates | Yes; Nginx is the proxy | Explicit Upgrade and Connection headers are required |
Yes |
| Apache | Certbot can manage the certificate lifecycle | Yes; Apache is the proxy | Rewrite WebSocket upgrades to ws://localhost:3001 |
Yes |
| Traefik | Configured certificate resolver on an HTTPS entrypoint | Yes; Traefik is the proxy | Traefik routes the WebSocket connection to service port 3001 | Yes |
| Cloudflare Tunnel | Zero-config SSL supplied by the tunnel | No separate Nginx, Caddy or Traefik proxy is needed | The tunnel publishes Kuma through its HTTP service | Yes |
Caddy is the shortest native configuration. Nginx and Apache are useful when you already operate those servers. Traefik fits label-driven Docker environments. Cloudflare Tunnel is the simplest route when you prefer not to expose ports 80 and 443 from the Kuma host.
Option A: Enable HTTPS with Caddy
Native Caddy installation
Install Caddy on the host that can reach Kuma on port 3001, then add a site block to its Caddyfile:

subdomain.domain.com {
reverse_proxy 127.0.0.1:3001
}
- Replace
subdomain.domain.comwith the DNS name you created. - Ensure the name resolves to the Caddy host and that ports 80 and 443 are reachable.
- Reload Caddy using the service-management method for your operating system.
- Open the HTTPS hostname and complete the Kuma login.
Caddy obtains and renews the certificate automatically when DNS and ports 80/443 are correctly configured. Its reverse_proxy handler supports the WebSocket upgrade needed by Kuma, so no separate upgrade directives are required in this minimal configuration.

The official Docker pattern places Uptime Kuma and Caddy on the same proxy network. The Kuma container receives a Caddy label that targets its internal port:
caddy.reverse_proxy: "* {{upstreams 3001}}"
Attach both containers to the shared proxy network, publish the hostname through Caddy, and keep Kuma’s container port private to that network. The double-curly expression must remain inside the label value; it tells Caddy to discover the container’s port 3001 upstream. Configure DNS and Caddy’s public ports as in the native setup.
Option B: Enable HTTPS with Nginx
Manual certificate configuration
Create an Nginx server block listening on 443. The following follows the official Kuma example; replace the hostname and certificate locations with paths that exist on your server.
server {
listen 443 ssl http2;
server_name sub.domain.com;
ssl_certificate /path/to/ssl/cert/crt;
ssl_certificate_key /path/to/ssl/key/key;
location / {
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_pass http://localhost:3001/;
proxy_http_version 1.1;
proxy_set_header Upgrade $http_upgrade;
proxy_set_header Connection "upgrade";
}
}
The Host, X-Real-IP and X-Forwarded-For headers preserve the original request context. The HTTP/1.1, Upgrade and Connection directives are what allow Kuma’s WebSocket connection to pass through Nginx.

Automate certificates with Certbot
- Start with the Nginx “Without SSL” settings from the official guide, proxying the hostname to port 3001.
- Install Certbot and its Nginx integration for your operating system.
- Run Certbot for the hostname and allow it to edit the Nginx configuration.
- Choose the automatic HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect when prompted.
- Verify that the scheduled renewal mechanism runs successfully before the certificate’s next renewal window.
Certbot can populate the certificate directives, configure redirection and handle renewal. Keep the WebSocket directives in the resulting HTTPS location; a certificate that works for ordinary pages is not enough if the upgrade headers are missing.
Option C: Enable HTTPS with Apache
Create an SSL virtual host
Enable Apache’s SSL, proxy and rewrite modules, then create a port-443 virtual host for the Kuma hostname. The essential certificate and ordinary HTTP proxy directives are:
<VirtualHost *:443>
ServerName sub.domain.com
SSLEngine On
SSLCertificateFile /path/to/ssl/cert/crt
SSLCertificateKeyFile /path/to/ssl/key/key
ProxyPreserveHost On
ProxyPass / http://localhost:3001/
ProxyPassReverse / http://localhost:3001/
</VirtualHost>
Use the WebSocket rewrite rules shown in the official Reverse Proxy wiki to send upgrade requests to ws://localhost:3001/ while ordinary requests continue to http://localhost:3001/. Do not substitute a plain HTTP proxy for the upgrade route: the dashboard may load while real-time updates fail.
Let Certbot manage Apache certificates
Certbot can request the certificate, add the SSL virtual-host directives and manage renewals. After Certbot changes the virtual host, confirm that the WebSocket rewrite section is still present and reload Apache. Test from outside the server so local firewall or hosts-file behavior does not hide a routing mistake.

- A host rule matching your Kuma domain.
- An HTTPS entrypoint.
tls=true.- A configured certificate resolver.
- A load-balancer service targeting container port
3001.
Replace the example hostname and resolver in the official Traefik guidance with names from your own Traefik configuration. Put Kuma and Traefik on the same Docker network, avoid publishing Kuma’s port directly, and let Traefik route both ordinary requests and WebSocket upgrades to port 3001.
Option E: Use Cloudflare Tunnel instead of a reverse proxy
The official Cloudflare Tunnel guide describes the tunnel as an easy alternative that does not need a separate Nginx, Caddy or Traefik installation. The tunnel supplies zero-config SSL and carries the public hostname to Kuma inside your network.
Docker deployment
- Create a Cloudflare Tunnel and its public hostname.
- Start the Kuma container with the tunnel token supplied by Cloudflare.
- Provide that token in Kuma’s tunnel settings as described by the official guide.
- Map the tunnel to Kuma’s internal HTTP service on port 3001.
- Open the HTTPS hostname externally and verify the dashboard and live updates.
Non-Docker installation
- Install
cloudflaredon the host running Kuma. - Authenticate and create or select a tunnel for the hostname.
- Configure the tunnel’s service target as Kuma’s local HTTP endpoint on port 3001.
- Run the tunnel as a managed service so it starts with the host.
- Test login, dashboard updates and notifications from a network outside your LAN.
Because the tunnel is the public entry point, you can leave Kuma’s native listener bound to the local host or restricted by the firewall. You still need a correct hostname-to-service mapping; the tunnel does not make an incorrect local port or WebSocket route work automatically.
Configure Trust Proxy only when it is appropriate
When every public request reaches Kuma through your proxy and the native port is firewall-restricted, open Settings → Reverse Proxy → HTTP Headers in Kuma and set Trust Proxy to Yes. Kuma will then trust the X-Forwarded-* headers inserted by the proxy, allowing client IP addresses to appear correctly in logs.
Do not enable this setting while users can bypass the proxy and connect directly to port 3001, or while untrusted clients can inject forwarded headers. Trust only a proxy whose network path and header handling you control.

Verify the deployment from outside your network
- Resolve the hostname with public DNS and confirm it points to the proxy or tunnel endpoint.
- Browse to the HTTPS hostname and check that the certificate matches the hostname and is currently valid.
- Sign in and leave the dashboard open while a monitor changes state; cards and event data should update without a manual refresh.
- Trigger a test notification and confirm it arrives through the channel you configured.
- Check proxy access logs for requests to the expected hostname and upstream port 3001.
- From a mobile connection or another external network, verify that port 3001 is not publicly reachable when it is intended to remain private.
- If you enabled Trust Proxy, inspect a log entry and confirm that the client address reflects the real remote user rather than the proxy host.
Troubleshoot common HTTPS and proxy failures
The certificate is not issued
Check that public DNS resolves to the machine handling the certificate request, ports 80 and 443 reach that machine, and no other service is answering for the hostname. For Caddy or Traefik, review the certificate resolver logs. For Nginx or Apache, rerun Certbot after correcting DNS or firewall rules.
The page loads but live updates stop
This almost always indicates a WebSocket route or header problem. In Nginx, confirm proxy_http_version 1.1, proxy_set_header Upgrade $http_upgrade and proxy_set_header Connection "upgrade" are inside the active location. In Apache, confirm the official rewrite rules send upgrades to ws://localhost:3001/. In Traefik or a tunnel, verify that the service target is Kuma’s port 3001 and that no middleware strips the upgrade.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Nginx or Apache returns 502 Bad Gateway
Test connectivity from the proxy host to 127.0.0.1:3001 or localhost:3001. Confirm Kuma is running, listening on the address the proxy uses, and not blocked by a local firewall. A containerized proxy must use the container or Docker-network address rather than a host-only loopback address that exists only inside its own container.
The browser redirects repeatedly or reports mixed content
Make sure the proxy terminates TLS for the same hostname users enter and forwards the original Host header. Keep one clear HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect at the edge. Do not publish Kuma under an unsupported subdirectory; use a dedicated hostname instead.
Logs show the proxy address instead of the visitor
Preserve the original client headers in the proxy configuration, then enable Trust Proxy at Settings → Reverse Proxy → HTTP Headers only after direct access to Kuma’s native port has been restricted.
The tunnel connects but Kuma is unreachable
Check the tunnel token, the local service target and the process running cloudflared. Confirm that the target is Kuma’s HTTP listener on port 3001 and test that listener locally on the Kuma host. A healthy tunnel process cannot compensate for a stopped Kuma service or an incorrect port.
