To farm in Core Keeper, plant a seed in hoed ground that supports it, water the plot, wait for the crop to mature, then harvest and save enough seeds to replant. A watered seed takes about 10 minutes to become harvestable according to the community-maintained Gardening wiki. Sprinklers can handle watering for a small plot; larger powered farms need a way to recover seeds as well as move crops.

How to grow your first crop

  1. Gather a seed. Choose a crop that suits the food or materials you want, and check its ground requirement before preparing a plot.
  2. Prepare compatible ground. Use a hoe on the right block to create tilled soil. Hoe coverage varies by tier, from one tile with a Wooden Hoe to up to 5×5 with a Scarlet Hoe, according to the Tools wiki.
  3. Plant the seed. Place it on the prepared ground. A Garden Trowel can plant up to 2×2 tiles; an Octarine Garden Trowel can cover up to 5×5, as listed on the Tools page.
  4. Water the plot. Water hoed soil with a Watering Can or a Sprinkler. The Large Watering Can covers up to 2×2 tiles, according to the Tools page.
  5. Wait, then harvest. The Gardening wiki describes a 10-minute timeline from watering to harvest: two minutes to sprout, four minutes to reach the pre-harvest stage, and four more minutes to become harvestable. Harvesting manually awards Gardening experience, according to the same page.
  6. Keep seeds for the next planting. The Gardening wiki says a seed is not recovered from about one quarter of harvested plants at the initial rate. Its page also says the Grateful Gardener talent can improve seed recovery.

Match the seed to its ground

Most seed types listed in the Gardening wiki have no special ground restriction in its compatibility table. These exceptions do:

  • Carrock: Stone Block.
  • Puffungi: Mold Block.
  • Coral, Pewpaya, and Pinegrapple: Beach Block.
  • Sunrice and Lunacorn: Crystal Block.

Check a crop’s entry before committing to a large plot. The wiki’s progression-ordered crop list includes Heart Berry, Glow Tulip, Bomb Pepper, Grub Kapok, Carrock, Puffungi, Bloat Oat, Coral, Pewpaya, Pinegrapple, event-limited Grumpkin, Sunrice, and Lunacorn. Root Seed is also listed, but grows wood rather than a vegetable crop.

Choose a farm setup

Approach Setup and space Ongoing work Seed supply
Hand-watered plot Hoe compatible ground, plant seeds, and use a Watering Can. The Large Watering Can covers up to 2×2 tiles, according to the Tools wiki. Water the plot manually as needed and harvest crops when ready. Save recovered seeds and replant them; the wiki reports that initial harvesting does not return a seed from about one quarter of plants.
Sprinkler-watered plot A Sprinkler waters hoed ground within two blocks horizontally and vertically. The Sprinkler wiki says it needs neither a water source nor electricity and lists a recipe of eight Scarlet Bars and eight Iron Bars at the Automation Table. Less manual watering; crops still need to be harvested unless you add automation. Plan to collect seeds from harvests and replant them.
Powered crop automation The Automation wiki describes setups using Sprinklers, Robot Farm Arms, Seed Extractors, Conveyor Belts, and Conveyor Belt Splitters. Requires power and routing components; the page describes the arrangement generally, not a tested blueprint or output rate. Route crop output through a Seed Extractor: the wiki says Robot Farm Arms do not generate seeds. Recovered seeds can be routed back for planting, with remaining output collected or sent elsewhere.

Scale up with sprinklers and seed recovery

Automate watering first

A Sprinkler is the simplest step away from watering by hand: place it so its coverage reaches the hoed ground you want watered. Its listed reach is two blocks horizontally and vertically from the sprinkler. The wiki says it does not need electricity or a water source. Its recipe is eight Scarlet Bars and eight Iron Bars at the Automation Table, so it is a later setup if those materials or the table are not yet available.

Add a seed loop for powered farms

For a larger automated arrangement, use the components described on the Automation wiki: Sprinklers to water, Robot Farm Arms to handle crops, and conveyors and splitters to route output. Because the page says Robot Farm Arms do not generate seeds, direct some crop output into a Seed Extractor and return the recovered seeds to planting. Collect or route the remainder as you prefer. The wiki does not give a complete tested blueprint or a dependable yield figure, so layout and output should not be assumed from a component list alone.

Which seeds are best?

There is no universally best seed established by the sources here. Choose based on what you need from the crop—food, materials, or progression—and whether you have the compatible ground and room to grow it. For a sustained farm, also account for seed recovery: some harvested plants will not return a seed at the initial rate described by the Gardening wiki. Root Seed belongs in a different category because it grows wood, not a vegetable crop.

What crop timing and harvest bonuses mean

The Gardening wiki reports that planted crops have a base 3% chance to become golden. It also lists a 0.4-percentage-point increase in extra harvest chance per Gardening level, reaching 40% at level 100. These are wiki-documented mechanics, not independently measured figures. The page lists talents for improved seed retrieval, additional food from eating plants or plant-based cooked food, food gained on harvest, a chance for player-planted crops to become golden, and combat effects. For farm planning, seed retrieval and harvest-related effects are the most directly relevant; check the talent descriptions in-game before building a plan around a specific bonus.

Crop names and version context

The crop compatibility, timing, and skill details above come from community-maintained Core Keeper wiki pages with no publication date shown. An unofficial game database identifies its data as coming from build 1.3.0.2-182b, but that does not establish that this is the current build or independently verify these farming mechanics. Treat version-sensitive details as documented wiki information rather than publisher-confirmed or newly tested behavior.
