Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has two related Corrupted Monk encounters. The earlier boss is in Mibu Village, in Ashina Depths; defeating it grants the Mibu Breathing Technique, which opens underwater exploration. The later, more involved True Corrupted Monk waits at Fountainhead Palace. The distinction matters: the Mibu fight is described with one Deathblow marker, while guides describe the True Corrupted Monk as a three-Deathblow encounter.
Which Corrupted Monk are you facing?
Use the location to identify the encounter before following a strategy. The Mibu Village Corrupted Monk is the earlier fight. The True Corrupted Monk is encountered later at Fountainhead Palace, after entering the palace and proceeding toward the bridge area.

| Encounter | Location | Deathblows | Progression consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corrupted Monk | Mibu Village, Ashina Depths | One marked Deathblow, as indicated by the encounter’s marker count | Grants the Mibu Breathing Technique, enabling underwater exploration |
| True Corrupted Monk | Fountainhead Palace | Three Deathblows, as described by guides | Part of later palace progression |
The phase-count distinction is based on the encounter markers and guide descriptions; it is separate from the general combat rule. FromSoftware’s Sekiro web manual explains: “If your enemy’s Posture is broken, he will momentarily become exposed to a Deathblow.” It also says red markers above an enemy’s Vitality bar show how many Deathblows are required.
What defeating the Mibu Village Corrupted Monk unlocks
The Mibu Village boss awards the Mibu Breathing Technique, along with the Memory: Corrupted Monk. The technique is a progression tool, not just a reward to collect: it allows Sekiro to explore underwater areas. If you have defeated this encounter and are wondering what to do next, look for underwater routes and items rather than heading directly to Fountainhead Palace on the assumption that this was the later monk.

How to approach the Mibu Village fight
Build your approach around Sekiro’s core posture-and-Deathblow system rather than assuming the boss must be defeated through vitality damage alone. The manual’s guidance is that breaking an enemy’s posture exposes it to a Deathblow. Watch the red marker above the Vitality bar to confirm the required Deathblow count for the opponent you are fighting.
- Learn the boss’s attack rhythm and use deflections to pressure posture.
- Respond to perilous attacks with the appropriate counter instead of treating every dangerous move the same way.
- Use the marker count to understand whether the encounter is finished; the Mibu Village fight is the earlier, one-marker encounter.
Available guidance supports these broad fundamentals, but not a reliable move-by-move timing script for the Mibu boss. Avoid relying on exact attack timings unless you are following a strategy verified for your specific encounter and version.

What changes in the True Corrupted Monk fight?
The True Corrupted Monk is a distinct later encounter at Fountainhead Palace, not a rematch that awards the Mibu Breathing Technique. Guides describe it as a three-Deathblow fight. The Fountainhead arena has branches that can provide a chance to perform an aerial Deathblow during a later phase. Treat that as an optional opportunity: it depends on execution and is not required to continue the fight. If you miss it, proceed through the encounter normally.
When following a walkthrough, check that it names Fountainhead Palace or the True Corrupted Monk before applying its phase instructions. A guide for the later fight may not describe the Mibu Village encounter you are currently facing.
