It could—but no confirmed rule or nominee list shows that Grand Theft Auto VI will be eligible for, nominated for, or win The Game Awards’ 2026 Game of the Year. Rockstar currently lists the game for November 19, 2026, a late-year release that makes award deadlines and jurors’ time to evaluate it important questions. The 2026 rules and outcome are not established by the available official information.
Why GTA 6’s release date raises a timing question
Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page schedules the game for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A launch that late in the year may fall close to the eligibility cutoff or nomination period of an awards program. Whether it does depends on that program’s rules and calendar—not simply on the release date.

The date is a current schedule, not proof that the game will launch as planned or qualify for a particular award. Eligibility, nomination, and winning are separate stages: a game must first meet an award program’s rules, then be selected as a nominee, and then win through that program’s voting process.
What The Game Awards’ rules do—and do not—tell us
The Game Awards says nominations are selected by a voting jury of “OVER 100 leading media and influencer outlets across the globe,” as described on its voting-jury page. That establishes who selects nominees in broad terms, but the available page does not establish the 2026 eligibility cutoff or how much time jurors will have to play GTA VI before nominations are decided.

The program’s FAQ gives a useful historical comparison, not an answer for 2026: games for the 2025 ceremony had to be publicly available by November 21, 2025, at 9 p.m. PT, and the FAQ said later releases would be eligible in 2026. That was the 2025 ceremony’s cutoff. It does not establish the cutoff for the 2026 ceremony.
So the decisive details to look for in The Game Awards’ 2026 rules are its cutoff date and time zone, when nominees are selected, and whether a game released shortly before the cutoff can be evaluated in time. Until those rules are published, it is not sound to call GTA VI automatically eligible or ineligible.

Why another awards program’s cutoff is not a substitute
Awards programs set their own calendars. Sony’s PlayStation Blog post about its 2025 Game of the Year Awards said that program’s nominee cutoff was November 30, 2025, with later releases eligible the next year. That date belongs to Sony’s awards, not The Game Awards.
The same Sony post said GTA VI was excluded from its 2025 Most Anticipated Game of 2026 and Beyond category because it had earned a Platinum in that category in the 2023 awards. That is a rule for a separate category and awards program; it says nothing about GTA VI’s eligibility for The Game Awards’ 2026 Game of the Year.

What the current nominee pages mean
The Game Awards’ Most Anticipated Game nominee page shows GTA VI as a winner in that category. This reflects an earlier Most Anticipated award; it is not a 2026 Game of the Year nomination or evidence of a future win. A game’s status in one category cannot settle its status in another year’s category.

For The Game Awards, the key evidence will be its official 2026 eligibility rules and nominee announcement. Check those against Rockstar’s current release information: the date and platform are listed on the game page, while Rockstar’s store page describes a PS5 physical code-in-box version. The package contains a download code, not a disc; Rockstar says the code supports pre-load on November 12.

Even after eligibility is confirmed, nomination and victory remain open questions. The jury’s role does not reveal how it will assess this particular game, and the available official information does not establish jurors’ evaluation time, the final 2026 GOTY field, or the eventual winner. A late release creates a plausible deadline-and-evaluation issue; it does not prove that the vote will be chaotic or that GTA VI will prevail.
