Rockstar has not announced Grand Theft Auto VI for Nintendo Switch 2. Its current official platform information lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only, so a Switch 2 release is unconfirmed. That is different from proving that a port is impossible.
Nintendo’s published Switch 2 specifications also cannot predict GTA VI’s frame rate, resolution, graphics settings, or stability. They describe the console’s display and video-output capabilities, not how this particular open-world game would perform. A hypothetical port would require extensive profiling and deliberate trade-offs that Rockstar has not described publicly.

What Rockstar has officially announced
Rockstar Games Customer Support’s page “Grand Theft Auto VI Platforms, Editions, and Versions,” last updated August 18, 2026, says: “You can pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.” Those are the platforms identified for the game’s listed editions and versions. Nintendo Switch 2 is not listed.
Rockstar’s current Grand Theft Auto VI game page likewise gives November 19, 2026 as the release date and names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Neither official page announces a Nintendo version. The most accurate answer to “Will GTA 6 come to Nintendo Switch 2?” is therefore: not according to the current official platform information.

That wording matters. “Not announced” does not mean “never coming.” Rockstar could announce another version later, but there is no confirmed Switch 2 build, release date, pre-order listing, technical test, or performance target to cite now.
Rockstar’s May 6, 2025 announcement for Trailer 2 adds one useful limitation: the trailer footage was captured on PlayStation 5. That tells you what hardware produced the published footage; it does not establish the final game’s requirements, a minimum specification, or a comparison with Switch 2.
What the Switch 2 specifications actually tell us
Nintendo’s official “Nintendo Switch 2 Tech Specs” page describes the hardware in broad product terms. It lists a custom processor made by NVIDIA, but does not provide CPU or GPU model names or performance figures on that page.

The difference between output capability and game rendering is essential. A console can send a 4K signal to a television without rendering every pixel natively. A 120 Hz display can refresh 120 times per second without a game producing 120 frames per second. Developers may use dynamic resolution, reconstruction, or other techniques, but no Rockstar implementation has been announced for Switch 2.

Nintendo’s 256 GB storage figure is also not a memory specification. Storage holds installed game data; RAM holds the active world, textures, geometry, code, and simulation state. The cited Nintendo page does not state the amount of RAM available to a game, so storage capacity cannot be used to calculate whether GTA VI fits in memory.
Can public specifications prove that GTA VI will run?
No. They cannot prove compatibility, and they cannot prove incompatibility.
To establish a real answer, Rockstar would need a Switch 2 build running on retail-target hardware, followed by profiling of the game’s CPU, GPU, memory, asset-streaming, and thermal behavior. Public display numbers do not reveal those results. They also do not reveal the game’s internal rendering resolution, simulation workload, loading strategy, or chosen frame-rate target.

A later port could be engineered with a different asset budget and mode-specific settings. Conversely, a port might be rejected for production, scheduling, business, or quality reasons even if engineers could make a technically reduced version run.

Claims such as “Switch 2 has enough teraflops,” “GTA VI will run at 30 fps,” or “the game must remove feature X” go beyond the official information currently available. No named performance statistic in the cited sources answers the compatibility question.
What a hypothetical Switch 2 port team would need to optimize
The following is general technical analysis of the work an open-world port would commonly require. It is not evidence that Rockstar is doing this work, and it does not predict a final setting or performance mode.
1. Profile the whole frame, not just the graphics
Engineers would begin with instrumented builds and representative scenes: crowded streets, high-speed travel, interiors, weather changes, combat, traffic, and long sessions. Profiling separates CPU time, GPU time, memory pressure, storage streaming, and synchronization stalls. The objective is a stable frame-time budget, not a headline number reached only in an empty scene.

Handheld and tabletop play use the 1920×1080 panel, while TV mode can output higher resolutions. A port could use one scalable renderer or distinct profiles for each mode. Engineers would measure power, heat, clocks, fan behavior, and sustained performance in both modes before deciding whether docked play receives higher resolution or detail. Nintendo’s output specifications do not indicate how much performance a specific game obtains in either mode.

3. Choose an internal resolution and reconstruction strategy
Resolution is one of the most visible adjustable budgets. A developer might select a dynamic internal resolution, reconstruction, or upscaling path to keep frame times within target. The right choice depends on motion, foliage, lighting, particles, and the quality of the implementation. It would be inaccurate to promise native 1080p, 1440p, or 4K, or to name a particular upscaler, without a confirmed Switch 2 build.
4. Establish a realistic frame-rate target
The team would choose an achievable target for each mode and protect frame pacing under worst-case workloads. A consistent 30 frames per second can be preferable to an unstable higher target in a simulation-heavy open world; a 60-fps mode could require substantial reductions elsewhere. The display’s 120 Hz capability does not imply a 120-fps GTA VI mode.
5. Tune CPU-heavy world simulation
Open-world games spend CPU time on traffic, pedestrians, physics, animation, navigation, mission logic, and background activity. Developers could profile update frequency, the number and complexity of active entities, collision work, and distant-world simulation. Any reduction would have to preserve mission behavior, responsiveness, and the feeling of a populated world. No public source identifies which GTA VI systems would be changed.

6. Set GPU budgets for lighting and geometry
Lighting, shadows, reflections, geometry density, materials, effects, and draw calls all compete for GPU time. A port team would create scalable quality levels and test them in the scenes that expose the largest cost. It is not responsible to state that a particular feature must be removed; only measurements from a Switch 2 build could show which settings are practical.

7. Control memory and asset streaming
GTA VI would need to stream a large world while the player moves quickly through it. Engineers would measure the active working set, texture and geometry budgets, decompression cost, storage throughput, cache behavior, and transitions between areas. They would also test whether rapid travel causes visible pop-in, pauses, or delayed asset loads. Nintendo’s 256 GB storage figure says how much installed space the system offers, not how much working memory the game receives.
8. Validate long sessions and system transitions
Quality assurance would cover suspend and resume, save and load behavior, controller input, handheld-to-TV transitions, sleep and wake, mission scripting, dense scenes, weather changes, and extended play. If online features are included in the eventual game, network behavior and account flows would require their own testing. Passing a short benchmark would not be enough for a reliable open-world release.

What would count as reliable confirmation?
Look for a Rockstar or publisher announcement that names Nintendo Switch 2, followed by an official product page, release date, or platform-specific pre-order listing. A technical presentation, gameplay footage identified as captured on Switch 2, or a review build with documented settings would provide stronger evidence about performance.
Rumors, screenshots, retailer placeholders, and calculations based only on display output cannot establish a port. Even footage would need clear platform attribution; Rockstar’s Trailer 2 footage was captured on PlayStation 5, so it should not be presented as Switch 2 evidence.
Should you buy Switch 2 specifically for GTA 6?
There is no confirmed Switch 2 edition that makes such a purchase decision rational today. A console, case, screen protector, controller, or storage accessory cannot make an unannounced game compatible. Choose hardware based on the games and features officially available for it, and treat any future GTA VI announcement as a separate update rather than an assumption.
The practical answer
Could GTA 6 run on Nintendo Switch 2? The public record does not answer yes or no. Rockstar’s current information supports only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while Nintendo’s specifications describe output capabilities rather than GTA VI performance. A port may be technically possible, but determining that would require a real build, detailed profiling, mode-specific tuning, memory and streaming work, and extensive quality assurance. Until Rockstar names Switch 2 officially, “unconfirmed” is the precise answer.
