The 2028 horizon is an industry forecast about continued tight supply and new capacity, not a console launch schedule or a guaranteed end to the shortage.
When will Xbox Project Helix launch?
Microsoft has confirmed that Project Helix is in development, but it has not announced a retail launch date. The company says it is building the console with AMD, designing it to play Xbox console and PC games, and plans to begin sending alpha hardware to developers in 2027. That is a developer-hardware milestone, not a promise of when consumers can buy the system. Microsoft’s Project Helix announcement provides no retail date.
In an April 2026 interview, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said memory costs would affect pricing and availability and that the company was not ready to share a launch timeline. Her comments, reported by Windows Central, establish that Microsoft is weighing component costs; they do not establish that Helix has been delayed.
What has Microsoft said about memory costs and Xbox availability?
In a June 10, 2026 employee message, Xbox leadership said console storage-component prices had more than doubled twice since the previous fall, with another significant increase expected by the 2027 holiday season. The message said memory costs had followed a broadly similar trajectory and that Xbox could not make as many consoles as players wanted. Those remarks concern Xbox’s component costs and console supply; they do not quantify a future Helix price or show that Helix production has been curtailed.

Sharma put the Helix implications plainly: “Memory costs will impact pricing, will impact availability.” That is a reason to expect cost and supply to matter in Microsoft’s planning, not a disclosed price, stock forecast, or launch decision.
Why do forecasts point to 2028?
The 2028 date comes from memory-market forecasts, not a confirmed end date for a “crisis.” TrendForce said DRAM supply would remain tight in 2027, with meaningful contributions from new fabrication capacity not expected until 2028. It estimated the DRAM sufficiency ratio at approximately -1% to -2% in 2026; that is a market-wide estimate, not a measurement of how much memory will be available to either console maker. TrendForce’s July 30, 2026 outlook also points to AI-server demand, high-bandwidth memory capacity allocation, and rising memory content in servers as contributors to DRAM pressure.

Micron’s outlook, reported by Tom’s Hardware on October 1, 2026, was that demand would exceed supply in both 2027 and 2028, with tighter conditions than in 2026 and no clear line of sight to balance. Micron expected industry DRAM and NAND shipments to grow in the low-to-mid 20s percentage range in each of the next two years, but still expected constrained supply. These are company forecasts, not guaranteed outcomes. Tom’s Hardware’s report of Micron’s earnings-call comments describes the outlook.
DRAM and NAND do not have identical outlooks
“Memory shortage” can obscure different supply trends. TrendForce forecast continued DRAM tightness, while it said NAND Flash conditions could loosen in the second half of 2027 as new capacity enters production. NAND is commonly used for storage, while DRAM is working memory; their supply outlooks should not be treated as interchangeable. Neither forecast establishes how much of either component a console maker can secure.

Is PS6 delayed because of the shortage?
No PS6 delay or shortage-related decision is confirmed in the available statements. Sony has not provided a PS6 launch date or described how memory procurement affects its plans in the sources cited here. S&P Global Market Intelligence discussed a likely 2028 next-generation console shelf window as analyst outlook, not as a Sony announcement. Its May 2026 discussion should not be read as confirmation of a PS6 date or delay.

| Question | What is established |
|---|---|
| Project Helix retail timing | No date announced. Microsoft has said developer alpha hardware is planned to begin in 2027. |
| Helix price and availability | Xbox has said memory costs will affect pricing and availability, but has not disclosed a price or a Helix-specific stock estimate. |
| PS6 timing and supply | No Sony launch date, shortage-related delay, or quantified supply effect is established here. |
| What 2028 signifies | Industry forecasts point to continued tightness and delayed capacity contributions; 2028 is neither a guaranteed shortage end nor a confirmed console launch year. |
For now, the reliable distinction is between a real component-cost and supply concern acknowledged by Xbox and an unannounced consumer launch schedule. Anyone waiting to compare these consoles should treat specific launch dates, prices, and stock predictions as unconfirmed until Sony or Microsoft announces them.
