Analysts have floated $999–$1,000 as a possible price for at least one next-generation configuration, but that is a forecast—not a confirmed retail price or a settled industry norm. Ampere Analysis has also modeled how a $1,000 launch could affect adoption and games spending, under specific assumptions.
Will the PS6 or next Xbox cost $1,000?
It is possible, according to analysts quoted by GamesRadar in March 2026, but there is no official PS6 or Project Helix price in the sources available. The $999 and $1,000 figures are analysts’ views, not announced MSRPs.

Kantan Games CEO Serkan Toto said that “$999 at least for one variant of the PS6 is not impossible.” That is a possibility for one configuration, not a prediction that every PS6 model will cost that much. NYU professor and industry researcher Joost van Dreunen went further, saying the market was moving toward a world where a $1,000 console “will be the norm” and console gaming could become a luxury expenditure. That is his outlook, not an established industry consensus.

Circana analyst Mat Piscatella emphasized the uncertainty: “I do not think that current market conditions allow for much certainty at all in the hardware market.” On timing and price, he said $1,000-plus pricing was possible, as were 2027 or 2028 launches—or later. None of those dates is a confirmed launch window.

What Ampere’s $1,000 scenario says about sales
Ampere Analysis modeled a specific case summarized by Video Games Chronicle on August 19, 2026: Sony and Microsoft launch conventionally designed, incrementally improved consoles in 2028, each priced at $1,000. Under that scenario, combined PS6 and Project Helix sales during their first five years could be up to 38% below PS5 and Xbox Series X/S sales during those systems’ first five years.
Ampere’s model also estimated that by 2031 the combined PlayStation and Xbox games-and-services market could be $3.4 billion, or 12%, smaller than in a comparison scenario where the new consoles launch at $700. These are conditional model results—not measured losses, guaranteed outcomes, or a general rule about what higher prices do to sales. The comparison depends on the modeled price, timing, and conventional hardware strategy.

Why analysts are discussing four-figure console prices
Recent US hardware pricing offers one point of context. VGC reported in August 2026 that the PS5 Pro had risen from its $700 launch price to $900. Those are dated US prices, not a universal global price comparison, and they do not establish what a future PlayStation or Xbox will cost.

Coverage has pointed to several possible sources of pricing pressure, including tariffs, component costs, AI data-center demand for hardware, and distribution challenges in parts of Asia. None is confirmed as the cause of a future console price. GamesRadar quoted van Dreunen as saying DRAM and NAND prices had risen 80–90% since the start of 2026; that is his attributed statement, not an independently established measure here. Component prices and other cost conditions could change before either console launches.

How a $1,000 launch might be avoided
Ampere’s analysis, as summarized by VGC, described several ways companies could reduce the risk of a four-figure launch. These are strategic possibilities, not announced Sony plans or confirmed Xbox pricing policies.
- Delay the generation. A launch later than 2028 could give component costs time to fall, though neither company has confirmed a launch date.
- Subsidize hardware or change monetization. Keeping a 2028 window while absorbing more of the hardware cost or using different sales and monetization strategies could alter the retail-price equation.
- Change the hardware proposition. A different form factor or use case could make the next generation more than an incremental graphics upgrade, potentially changing how it is priced and sold.
VGC also reported Xbox CEO Asha Sharma saying it would be difficult to imagine mass audiences spending thousands of dollars on a console generation, and that “radically different business models” could emerge. Her comment described possibilities; it did not announce Project Helix’s price or business model.

What is still unknown
There is no confirmed PS6 or Project Helix retail price, final configuration, or launch date in the cited coverage. Whether a console approaches $1,000 will depend on decisions and conditions that remain unsettled: component costs closer to launch, hardware design, the timing of each generation, and whether either company chooses to subsidize hardware or change its sales strategy. The forecasts are reasons to watch those factors—not a basis for treating $1,000 as the new standard today.
