The “wrong protocol” question in this title comes from a February 27, 2002 discussion about the original Half-Life Counter-Strike. In that report, the server uses protocol 43 while the client uses protocol 45; forum replies treat the mismatch as a version-compatibility problem. What “newer protocol than your client” meant in the 2002 post
The player said they could not connect to a Half-Life Counter-Strike server because it was using protocol 43 while their client was using protocol 45. Replies suggested updating the Counter-Strike client or trying a server compatible with the installed version. These were forum users’ suggestions in 2002, not official support instructions or a diagnosis for present-day Counter-Strike or CS2.

Do not use the values 43 and 45 to identify current game versions. The exact game edition, platform, complete error message, and server type matter; without them, the historical explanation may not apply to your situation.
What to try on a current Steam installation
If you are troubleshooting a Steam-installed game and suspect it is out of date or has damaged files, Steam Support documents general update and file-integrity steps. Its pages do not say these steps specifically fix a current wrong-protocol error.

Check for updates and verify the installed files
- Restart your computer and Steam, then check whether the game has an update available.
- In Steam, open Library, select the game, and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam says verification may take several minutes. Some local configuration files may fail verification normally. See Steam Support’s file-verification instructions.
If the game update is failing
Steam’s general update and installation guidance also lists clearing the download cache, repairing the library folder, and trying another download region when appropriate. These steps target update or installation problems generally; they are not a confirmed fix for a protocol mismatch. See Steam Support’s update and installation troubleshooting.
What information helps narrow down a persistent error
If the message remains, record the exact game edition and platform, the full error text, whether the client is updated, and whether the problem occurs on one server or several. That information helps distinguish a server-specific compatibility issue from a local update or installation problem. The available Steam support pages do not establish a Counter-Strike 2-specific fix for this error.
