Cracker’s Wither Storm Modpack: Performance, Installation and Server Guide

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cracker’s Wither Storm is a Minecraft Java survival-challenge mod, not a lightweight cosmetic add-on. It recreates the enormous Wither Storm from Minecraft: Story Mode with multiplayer support, staged boss encounters, the Formidibomb, new equipment and Wither Sickness. The entity’s size and simulation workload can create severe client FPS drops and server TPS lag, especially in later phases.

For the least-friction setup, use the Forge 1.20.1 performance-focused pack on both client and server. Whichever release you choose, match the Minecraft version, loader, mod file and every dependency exactly, test in a disposable world, and keep a backup before summoning the storm.

What Cracker’s Wither Storm adds

The project is designed as a survival challenge in which players prepare equipment, move, hide and attempt to defeat the Wither Storm rather than simply fight a normal Minecraft boss. Its feature set includes multiplayer compatibility, boss-battle mechanics, the Formidibomb, configurable settings, additional tools and weapons, and Wither Sickness. The storm is intentionally destructive, so the mod changes the risk profile of a world as soon as it is summoned.

That design also explains the performance problem. A normal Minecraft world is not built around a single entity that is exceptionally large while running complex movement, attack, growth and world-interaction logic. The project documentation cautions that these mechanics can cause large amounts of lag. There is no authoritative, controlled FPS or TPS benchmark that applies to every computer or server; results vary with the Minecraft release, other mods, render distance, shaders, CPU, GPU, memory allocation, player count and the storm’s phase.

Supported Minecraft versions and loaders

The compatibility listing covers Minecraft Java Edition, with both client and server environments supported. The standard mod has entries for Forge and NeoForge on the versions below:

Minecraft Java version Loader listed Client support Server support Important qualification
1.20.1 Forge and NeoForge Yes Yes Use a mod file and dependencies built for 1.20.1.
1.19.2–1.19.4 Forge and NeoForge Yes Yes Choose the exact minor version your instance or server runs.
1.18.2 Forge and NeoForge Yes Yes Do not mix files from another Minecraft release.
1.16.5 Forge and NeoForge Yes Yes Older release; confirm that all accompanying mods still support it.

“Forge 1.20.1” is the target combination for the separately described Cracker’s Wither Storm Performance pack. That pack is presented as optimized and shader-ready for the boss fight and supports client and server play. Shader-ready does not mean shaders are required; adding them increases rendering work and can reduce headroom during the storm.

Keep four items in lockstep:

  • the Minecraft Java version;
  • the loader (Forge or NeoForge);
  • the exact Cracker’s Wither Storm file or performance pack release; and
  • every required server-side and client-side dependency.

A mismatch commonly produces a loader error, a missing-mod screen, a server that refuses the connection, or a world that loads without the expected mechanics.

Choosing the right setup

Setup Best fit Strengths Trade-offs
Standard mod on a listed Forge version Players who need a particular Minecraft release or are adding the storm to an existing, carefully managed mod set Broadest version choice within the published compatibility range; configurable world and server settings Large mod collections and graphics enhancements can compound the storm’s CPU, memory and rendering load.
Standard mod on a listed NeoForge version Servers already standardized on NeoForge Supported client and server environment without changing the project’s core challenge Every dependency must have a compatible NeoForge build; a Forge file cannot be substituted.
Cracker’s Wither Storm Performance, Forge 1.20.1 New installations prioritizing boss-fight performance and shader compatibility Pack description emphasizes optimization and shader readiness; Forge 1.20.1 is a single, clear target Less suitable if your community must remain on another Minecraft version or loader.

If you are starting from scratch, the performance pack is the sensible first test because it narrows the compatibility variables. If an established server is already on another listed release, staying on that release can be safer than migrating solely for the storm.

Install the mod on a client

Use a separate instance rather than changing a main vanilla profile. This makes it possible to remove the mod, test a different loader or roll back after a failed experiment.

  1. Select the Minecraft release. Pick one of the listed Java versions, preferably 1.20.1 for the performance-focused pack.
  2. Install the matching loader. Install the Forge or NeoForge build for that exact Minecraft version. Launch the instance once so the loader creates its directory structure.
  3. Obtain the matching mod or pack release. The file must name the same Minecraft version and loader as the instance. If the listing specifies dependencies, obtain their matching builds as well.
  4. Place files in the instance’s mods folder. Keep only files intended for that version and loader. Do not put a server-only configuration file in this folder.
  5. Start the game and check the title screen or mod list. Confirm that the storm mod and its dependencies are recognized before creating a valuable world.
  6. Create a test world. Open the mod’s world-options menu and review settings before summoning anything. Use this world to check visibility, evolution and multiplayer joining.

Client and server files must represent the same release. A client can launch successfully while still being unable to join because the dedicated server has a different loader, mod version or dependency set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a dedicated multiplayer server

The mod supports multiplayer on a self-hosted Forge server or through a managed host. A dedicated server should be treated as a separate, version-locked installation rather than a copy of a player’s casual client.

  1. Choose the server’s Minecraft and loader combination. Use a listed Forge or NeoForge release; use Forge 1.20.1 when deploying the performance-focused pack.
  2. Install the corresponding server loader. Use the loader’s server installer and start the server once to generate its folders and configuration files.
  3. Install the exact mod and dependencies. Put the server-compatible files in the server’s mods directory. Every connecting player needs the matching client-side files where the loader requires them.
  4. Start a new world for the first run. Do not test the storm in the community’s long-running survival world. The project warns that its destructive behavior can permanently damage an existing world.
  5. Stop the server before editing configuration. Locate the per-world file serverconfig/witherstormmod-server.toml inside the world save. Keep a copy of the original file before changing values.
  6. Reload after configuration changes. Evolution and other world settings do not take effect reliably until the world is unloaded and loaded again; restarting the server is the clearest way to ensure that reload.
  7. Connect with a matching client. Test with one or two players before opening the server to a larger group, watching both client smoothness and server tick health.

The configuration is per world. Changing a file in one save does not automatically alter another save, and changing a server file does not replace the world-options settings used by single-player.

Protect the world before summoning the storm

Make a backup immediately before the first summon and retain an untouched copy outside the active server directory. The project specifically advises against summoning the storm in a valuable existing world because destruction may be permanent.

  • Use a fresh test world to verify that the mod loads, the storm appears and evolution proceeds.
  • Stop the server before copying a save so region and player data are not being written during the backup.
  • Label backups with the Minecraft version, loader and mod release.
  • For a multiplayer campaign, keep a pre-summon backup and a second backup before major progression milestones.
  • Test restoring a copy, not merely creating one; an untested archive is not a recovery plan.

Do not treat a backup as an undo button for a live experiment. Roll back by stopping the server, moving the damaged world aside, restoring the known-good copy and starting with the same version-locked files.

Why the Wither Storm lags

Large-entity simulation

The project’s performance documentation identifies the core issue: Minecraft is not designed to support very large entities, and the storm’s complex mechanics can create substantial lag. Later phases can increase the amount of work the server performs even when players are not looking directly at the storm.

Client rendering load

Render distance, particles, animated effects and shaders add GPU and CPU work. A shader-ready pack gives you the option to use shaders; it does not remove the cost of them. Lowering visual settings can improve FPS without changing the server’s simulation workload.

Server tick load

Server TPS lag is separate from a client’s frame rate. A player may see a smooth-looking scene while the server is falling behind, or see low FPS while the server remains healthy. Player count, other automation-heavy mods and the storm phase all affect the result, so a single FPS or TPS figure cannot be used as a universal requirement.

Performance troubleshooting, in the order that works

  1. Reproduce the issue in a clean test world. Temporarily remove unrelated mods and disable shaders. This tells you whether the storm itself or a wider pack is responsible.
  2. Confirm exact versions. Check the client, server, loader, storm file and dependencies. Version drift can look like a performance bug when it is actually a loading or compatibility problem.
  3. Reduce client rendering cost. Lower render distance and other heavy visual options first. If you use shaders, turn them off while diagnosing; re-enable them only after the storm is stable.
  4. Check OptiFine’s Smooth World option. If the storm is invisible or stops evolving while OptiFine is installed, open Video Settings > Performance and disable Smooth World. The project documentation calls out this setting specifically.
  5. Inspect the client configuration. The performance guidance recommends checking the mod’s client config for options that trade visual detail or effects for stability. Change one setting at a time and restart or reload as required.
  6. Address server TPS separately. In the server configuration, enabling Squash Hitboxes can help TPS during higher storm phases. The project warns that this setting may have drawbacks, so test it in a backup world and observe gameplay before adopting it for a campaign.
  7. Reduce concurrent work. Pause unnecessary farms, redstone systems and other high-activity mods while the storm is active. This does not change the storm’s mechanics, but it leaves more tick budget for them.
  8. Test with fewer players. If the server recovers when only one or two players are online, the limitation may be aggregate simulation and networking load rather than a single client GPU.
  9. Restore the last known-good state. If a setting causes missing visuals, failed evolution or worse TPS, revert the configuration backup rather than stacking more changes.

Do not interpret a temporary improvement as a guaranteed hardware requirement. The project publishes no controlled benchmark, minimum RAM figure, guaranteed player count or universal FPS/TPS target.

Make the storm evolve faster

Evolution speed is controlled per world with the evolutionAttributeModifier setting.

  1. For single-player, open the mod’s world-options menu for the world you intend to play.
  2. For a dedicated server, stop the server and open serverconfig/witherstormmod-server.toml inside that world’s save directory.
  3. Find evolutionAttributeModifier and choose a value below 1 to accelerate evolution.
  4. Use 0.1 for the fastest value allowed by the documented setting.
  5. Save the file, keep the original as a backup, and reload the world before judging the result.

A value below one changes the evolution rate; it does not make the world safer or reduce the storm’s destructive behavior. Test the chosen value in a disposable world first, because faster evolution gives players less preparation time and can expose performance problems sooner.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Self-hosting gives an administrator direct access to the world save, serverconfig/witherstormmod-server.toml, backups and loader files. It also makes the administrator responsible for operating-system updates, network access, monitoring and recovery.

Managed hosting can simplify deployment. PlayNHost currently advertises one-click hosting for the Cracker’s Wither Storm Performance pack, but a one-click option is not a performance guarantee. Before paying, verify the service’s region, allocated RAM and CPU, backup controls, pricing, supported mod and loader versions, player limits and current terms. Confirm that you can download a complete world backup and edit the per-world TOML configuration.

Decision point Self-hosted server Managed host
Version control Administrator installs and locks every file Provider may offer a curated installer; verify exact release support
Configuration access Direct access to serverconfig/witherstormmod-server.toml Must provide file manager or equivalent per-world access
Backups You create, test and store them Check retention, download and restore procedures
Performance resources Depends on the machine and network you control Depends on the plan’s actual CPU, RAM, region and oversubscription
Maintenance You handle loader, Java, mod and operating-system updates Provider may simplify updates, but you remain responsible for compatibility and world safety

A practical rollout plan for a group

Phase 1: Compatibility check

Choose the Minecraft version and loader, install the exact files on one client and a temporary server, and confirm that players can connect. Do not add shaders or unrelated performance mods until this baseline works.

Phase 2: World-safety test

Create a disposable world, summon or activate the storm, and check visibility, evolution and major mechanics. Test the world-options menu and, on a dedicated server, edit and reload the TOML file.

Phase 3: Load test

Invite the expected number of players, move through the phases that matter to your group and observe client FPS and server TPS independently. Record which settings were changed so you can reproduce a stable configuration.

What to check when something goes wrong

The server rejects a player

Compare Minecraft version, loader, storm file and dependencies on both sides. A client-only launch success does not prove multiplayer compatibility.

The storm is invisible or does not evolve

If OptiFine is installed, disable Smooth World under Video Settings > Performance. Then verify the mod version and reload the world. If the problem persists, reproduce it without unrelated mods or shaders.

Later phases make the server unresponsive

Back up the world, reduce concurrent mod activity and test Squash Hitboxes in the server configuration. Because the setting has documented drawbacks, validate the result in a copy before applying it to the campaign.

A configuration edit appears to do nothing

Confirm that you edited the file for the active world, saved it while the server was stopped and reloaded the world afterward. The setting is per world, not a universal installation switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for choosing a setup

Use the Forge 1.20.1 performance pack when you want the clearest supported target and a setup described as optimized and shader-ready. Use the standard mod on another listed Forge or NeoForge version only when that version is important to your existing community or mod collection. In every case, plan for unusually high simulation load, separate client FPS from server TPS, test all settings in a new world and protect the real campaign with a verified backup.
