A Valheim join code usually fails for one of six reasons: the host is using the Steam backend instead of Crossplay, the code was entered outside Join Game → Add server, a client or server is on a different game build, Xbox crossplay is hidden by account settings, the code belongs to an expired session, or Steam-backend networking has not been configured. Start by confirming the host mode and both game versions; do not forward ports for a Crossplay server.

What a Valheim join code is—and what it is not
Iron Gate’s Crossplay FAQ explains that starting a server through the game or hosting a dedicated server exposes a Join code in the host’s pause menu. The host copies that code, and the other player opens Join Game, chooses Add server, pastes the code and submits it.

The code is a locator for a server running through Valheim’s Crossplay backend. It is not a replacement for every type of multiplayer address. A local IP address, loopback address such as 127.0.0.1, or a server-name search entry cannot be substituted for a Crossplay code. If the host is using the Steam backend, the connection follows Steam networking rules instead of the relay workflow.
A code can also become unusable when the host stops the session, restarts the server or changes the server mode. When the code is missing, stale or rejected immediately, restart the host session and copy a newly displayed code before changing router settings.
Fix the problem in the right order
Work through these checks in sequence. They separate a bad or outdated code from a backend, version, account-setting or network problem.
1. Confirm that the host is actually using Crossplay
Cross-platform joining requires Crossplay hosting. For an in-game host, check that the session was started with cross-platform play enabled. For a dedicated server, inspect the startup arguments and verify that they include -crossplay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIron Gate’s dedicated-server documentation states that -crossplay starts the server on the Crossplay backend, allowing players on different platforms to join. Without that argument, the server uses the Steam backend; only Steam users can discover and join that server through Steam networking. A join code copied from a Steam-only setup will not make an Xbox, Mac App Store or other non-Steam client compatible.
If you changed the argument, fully stop and restart the server. Do not assume that editing a script while the process is running changes the existing session. After the restart, open the pause menu again and copy the newly generated code.
2. Use the documented join path
- On the joining player’s device, open Valheim and select Join Game.
- Select Add server.
- Paste the host’s current join code into the code field.
- Submit the entry and wait for the server to resolve.
Do not paste the code into a server-name search box. Do not add spaces, quotation marks or explanatory text around it. If the host sent the code through a chat application, copy only the code itself; some apps can include trailing spaces or line breaks.

If the host’s pause menu does not show a join code, treat that as a hosting-mode or session-state problem rather than a client typing problem. Stop the session, start it again with the intended Crossplay setting and copy the code after the server is running.
3. Match the client and server versions
Every participant must be able to run the same compatible Valheim build. Valheim 1.0 supports crossplay across platforms, but crossplay can fail while one platform is waiting for a patch. Check the version shown by each client and the version reported by the dedicated server before testing another code.
There was a specific rollout issue on October 15, 2026: Iron Gate reported that the Mac App Store build was temporarily delayed for Patch 1.0.20. Until that Mac build caught up, it could not crossplay with other platforms. In that situation, repeatedly generating codes, changing ports or reinstalling the server will not solve the mismatch; update the delayed client and test again after it reaches the same patch level.
Version checks should include:
- the host’s game version;
- the joining player’s game version;
- the dedicated server version, if a dedicated server is used;
- the platform and store build, since two devices can receive the same numbered patch at different times.
When an update has just been released, allow for platform-specific rollout timing. A console or store client that still displays an older build is not evidence that the join code itself is invalid.
4. Apply the networking rule for the selected backend
| Server backend | Who can join | Network model | Port-forwarding rule | Address/code behavior |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crossplay | Players on supported platforms, when all clients and the server are compatible | Relay service | Router port forwarding is not required | Use the generated join code; a local IP or loopback address cannot be used for the Crossplay connection |
| Steam | Steam users | Steam backend with reachable server ports | Forward the configured port and the next port; Iron Gate’s documented default is 2456–2457 | Use the Steam-server workflow rather than treating the session as a Crossplay-code server |
These rules are not interchangeable. Forwarding ports on a Crossplay server does not repair a missing or stale code, because the Crossplay connection uses a relay. Conversely, a Steam-backend dedicated server may remain unreachable until its configured ports are reachable from the internet.

For a Steam-backend server, verify the actual port values in the server configuration. The commonly documented defaults are UDP ports 2456 and 2457, but a server administrator can configure different values. Forward the configured port and the immediately following port to the machine running the server, then allow the server process through the host operating system’s firewall. If you switch that server to Crossplay by adding -crossplay, retest with a newly generated code and do not continue troubleshooting it as a Steam port-forwarding problem.
5. Check Xbox crossplay visibility and permissions
An Xbox player can join a dedicated server when Crossplay is enabled on both the Xbox and the server. Iron Gate notes that parental-control settings can hide the Crossplay option. If the option is missing rather than merely disabled, inspect the Microsoft/Xbox family and privacy settings associated with that account.
After changing a permission, completely close and relaunch Valheim so the account settings are read again. Confirm that the server is also running with Crossplay enabled; enabling a client option cannot convert a Steam-backend server into a Crossplay server.
6. Refresh the session before changing infrastructure
A join code identifies the current host session. If the host paused, stopped, recreated or reconfigured the server, the old value may no longer resolve. Use this refresh sequence:

- Start the intended in-game or dedicated-server mode again.
- Wait until the server is fully running.
- Open the pause menu and copy the newly displayed join code.
- Have the friend remove the old entry, choose Add server and submit the new code.
This is the fastest way to eliminate a stale value. It also prevents you from changing a router configuration for a code that no longer belongs to an active session.

Diagnose by the symptom you see
| Symptom | Most likely branch | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No join code appears in the host’s pause menu | The host is not running a Crossplay-capable session, or the server has not finished starting | Restart the session; for a dedicated server, verify -crossplay and copy the code after startup completes |
| The code is rejected immediately | Wrong field, transcription problem or stale code | Use Join Game → Add server, paste only the current code and obtain a fresh one if necessary |
| Steam player can join, Xbox or another platform cannot | The server is using the Steam backend, or a platform version differs | Check for -crossplay and compare every client/server build |
| Everyone is on the same platform but nobody can connect to a dedicated server | Backend-specific networking or server startup issue | Identify Steam versus Crossplay first; only a Steam-backend server requires the documented reachable ports |
| Xbox cannot see a Crossplay option | Parental-control or privacy settings are hiding it | Review the Xbox account’s family and privacy controls, then relaunch the game |
| Mac App Store player fails while other platforms work on October 15, 2026 | Temporary Patch 1.0.20 rollout delay | Update the Mac build before attempting further network changes |
| A previously working code stops resolving after the host restarts | The code belonged to the earlier session | Generate and distribute a new code |
Dedicated server checks for administrators
Verify the launch mode
Open the command, script or service definition that starts the server and look for the Crossplay argument. The relevant setting is the literal argument -crossplay. Its presence determines whether the server uses the Crossplay backend rather than the Steam backend.
After adding or removing the argument, stop the old process and start a new one. Keep the resulting mode in your incident notes so that a Steam-only test is not mistaken for a Crossplay failure.

Verify that the running process matches the edited configuration
A common administrative mistake is editing one startup file while a service manager launches a different file. Check the command line of the process that is actually running, the service definition used at boot and the server log’s startup information. If those disagree, correct the active service definition and restart it.
Use the correct port expectations
Do not add port forwarding simply because a join code fails. Crossplay uses a relay and is designed to avoid router forwarding. Steam-backend hosting is different: Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide documents the default range 2456–2457, with the configured port and the next port needing to be reachable. Use the values configured for your server, not a copied default, when checking the router and firewall.
Retest from the intended platform combination
Test one Steam client and one non-Steam client only after the server is confirmed to be in Crossplay mode and all builds match. A Steam-only success proves that the server is running, but it does not prove that Crossplay is enabled.

Choosing between in-game hosting, Steam and Crossplay
The best setup depends on who needs to play and whether the world must remain available when the host is offline.
| Setup | Platform mix | Persistence | Networking work | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary in-game host with Crossplay | Cross-platform, provided the host starts Crossplay | The session follows the host’s game session | No router port forwarding; distribute the current join code | A group plays together while the host is present |
| Dedicated server with Crossplay | Cross-platform, provided the server uses -crossplay |
Persistent server process | Relay-based; no router port forwarding required | The world should remain available independently of one player’s client |
| Steam-backend dedicated server | Steam users | Persistent server process | Reachable configured port and next port; documented default 2456–2457 | Every participant is on Steam and the administrator can manage network reachability |
A managed server may reduce the amount of machine and network administration, but the same backend choice still controls whether a Crossplay join code is appropriate. Before contacting a host or changing a router, identify the platform mix, persistence requirement and backend.
What not to treat as a universal fix
Iron Gate’s cited documentation does not establish cache deletion, PlayFab-account resets, VPN changes or a particular firewall product as guaranteed remedies for a failed join code. Those actions may be relevant to a platform-specific error, but applying them blindly can remove useful diagnostic information or change the network path without addressing the actual cause.
First establish the documented variables: backend, join path, current code, client/server versions, Xbox visibility settings and the correct port model. Only then investigate a platform-specific symptom using that platform’s support process.
How to report a failure that survives the checklist
If the code still fails after the workflow, backend, version and networking checks pass, send Iron Gate an English support request or bug report with reproducible details. Include:
- the platform and store build for every player;
- the client version for each player and the dedicated-server version, if applicable;
- whether the server is an in-game host or dedicated server;
- whether the backend is Crossplay or Steam;
- whether the server startup includes
-crossplay; - the exact error text, including capitalization;
- the date and time of the failed attempt, including time zone;
- the sequence that reproduces the failure, such as Join Game → Add server → paste code;
- relevant server-log lines around startup and the failed connection.
Do not post an active join code publicly. It identifies a live session and is unnecessary for diagnosing whether the server is using the correct backend or whether versions match.
Fast decision tree
- Is there a code in the host’s pause menu? If no, restart the session and verify Crossplay mode; for a dedicated server, check
-crossplay. - Is the friend using Join Game → Add server? If no, use that exact path and paste only the current code.
- Do all clients and the server show compatible versions? If no, update the delayed platform. On October 15, 2026, this specifically included the Mac App Store delay for Patch 1.0.20.
- Is the server Crossplay? If yes, do not forward ports; if no and the players are Steam-only, apply the Steam port rule.
- Is an Xbox Crossplay option hidden? Review parental-control and privacy settings, then relaunch.
- Does a fresh code still fail after all checks? Capture versions, backend, error text, time and logs for a support report.

The Bottom Line
When a Valheim join code fails, verify Crossplay mode and the exact Join Game → Add server path before touching your router. Match every client and server version, refresh the code after restarting the session, check Xbox visibility settings, and reserve port forwarding for Steam-backend servers using the configured port and the next port.
