Pick one small project you can finish with the time, space and budget you have, then gather only the materials it calls for. There is no universal starter kit: scissors, glue or other tools are useful only when they suit the craft and the material.
How to choose a first craft project
Start from something you would enjoy making, then check whether the project is manageable in your actual workspace. A clear, step-by-step project is a better first lesson than a large or complicated piece: it lets you practice one technique and discover what you need before buying more supplies.
- Interest: Choose a finished object or technique that genuinely appeals to you.
- Time: Look for a project you can complete in the available session or divide into clear stages.
- Space and cleanup: Make sure you have room to work and can clean and store materials safely afterward.
- Budget: Price the specific materials on the project list before starting; avoid buying a broad kit full of tools you may not use.
- Tools: Check whether the project requires a specialized tool, and whether you can borrow one or choose a simpler project instead.
These are practical ways to compare projects, not a ranking of which craft is cheapest, quickest or safest. Those answers depend on the project and materials.
What to gather for your first project
Use the project instructions as your shopping list. Buy or borrow only the required materials and a few reusable basics that suit that project. For example, scissors may be helpful for many kinds of crafting, but the appropriate type depends on what you are cutting. - Read the entire project’s materials and tool list before buying anything.
- Match each tool to the material and task; do not assume a general-purpose tool is suitable.
- Check product labels for age guidance, handling instructions and any protective equipment or ventilation requirements.
- Set out only what the project needs, with a clear place to work and clean up.
- Add a tool to your collection only when a later project calls for it.
How to work safely
Craft materials can pose different hazards: some may cause poisoning if swallowed or inhaled, fumes may be harmful, some products can irritate or burn skin or eyes, and scissors or blades can cause cuts. Health Canada’s guidance is to “Always read labels and follow instructions.” Its arts and crafts safety guidance recommends precautions tailored to the materials you use:
- Learn the hazards of each product and follow its label, including directions for ventilation, protective equipment, storage and disposal.
- Keep food and drinks away from the work area, and do not mix products.
- Wash your hands after crafting; clean tools and surfaces as directed.
- Keep hazardous supplies away from children and pets, and store materials in their labeled containers.
- Follow local disposal instructions rather than pouring or throwing materials away in ways the label does not allow.
Crafting with children
Choose products labeled for the child’s age and supervise closely, particularly when projects involve small parts, sharp tools or materials that should not be swallowed. Health Canada identifies these safer substitutions for some activities:

- Choose pre-mixed, talc-free clay instead of powdered clay.
- Use water-based white glue instead of solvent-based adhesives.
- Choose water-based markers instead of permanent felt-tip markers.
These examples are not a guarantee that every water-based product is harmless. Check the product label and follow its age and use instructions. Health Canada also advises choosing a slime recipe without boric acid; some recipes use boric acid through contact lens solution.
