Coven of the Chicken Foot is the debut game from Wildflower Interactive, the studio led by Bruce Straley, known for directing The Last of Us and Uncharted 4. What is Coven of the Chicken Foot?
Wildflower Interactive describes the game as a character-focused puzzle-platform adventure with exploration, environmental puzzles, and a semi-open world. Its fantasy setting is what remains after the celebrated heroes have moved on: Gertie sets out to fulfill an oath to her coven, passing through dark dungeons, forests, catacombs, and dangerous bogs.
Gertie is an elderly witch, not a conventional action hero built around sword-fighting or double-jumping. She must rely on a peculiar creature companion as she explores and solves problems. Wildflower says the creature can observe context and develop behaviors, abilities, and motivations during play. The studio has described the game as wordless, with gestures, player choices, environmental details, and the evolving relationship carrying the story. What is Bruce Straley’s new game?
It is the first game from Wildflower Interactive, the studio Straley founded, rather than a new The Last of Us or Uncharted project. Straley’s prior directing credits include both games, but the connection here is creative interest in how players relate to characters—not a shared story world or sequel.

Straley has said the concept had been with him since the early Jak and Daxter period. He wanted to explore storytelling in which the player helps drive a character relationship within the game world, rather than receiving most of the story through cutscenes and exposition. Game Informer’s December 16, 2025 interview reports that he called the idea a “spiritual successor of Ellie.” That is an analogy for the kind of responsive character relationship he wanted to explore—not a claim that Gertie’s companion is Ellie, or that the games share a universe.
Is it like The Last of Us?
There is a supported point of comparison: Straley has spoken about wanting character relationships to feel interactive and shaped by the player. A GamesRadar+ interview also cites The Last of Us, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and Princess Mononoke among the project’s relationship and art influences. Wildflower’s description of a wordless story and an adaptive companion points toward a different structure from a conventional, dialogue-led action adventure; it does not establish that the games share mechanics, tone, or quality.

Straley has said the companion is intended to respond without being perfect. The team leaned into the possibility of mistakes that might feel charming or surprising rather than simply frustrating. That is an account of design intent, not a hands-on assessment of how the companion behaves in the finished game. GamesRadar+’s interview discusses that approach.
When does Coven of the Chicken Foot come out, and what platforms are confirmed?
The announcement says the game is coming to PC via Steam. The Steam listing currently labels its release date “To be announced” and says it is not yet available. No console version or launch date is confirmed by these sources, so neither should be assumed.
