There is no single button mapping for every event in Crash ’n the Boys: Street Challenge. On the NES, the same buttons do different jobs depending on what you are playing: repeated right taps run in the hurdles, while repeated B taps wind up a hammer swing and A releases it in hammer throw golf. Use the event-by-event guide below, and check the in-game control display if an action does not match your version.

How to read the controls

The detailed inputs here describe the NES control scheme as summarized in the manual and contributor guides. Nintendo’s US listing also offers a Nintendo Switch digital edition, but the available control information does not establish that every original NES input maps identically on Switch. If you are playing that edition, use its in-game control display to confirm specific actions.

Button directions such as “right” mean a D-pad direction; “tap” means press repeatedly rather than hold. The events ask for different kinds of decisions: movement and obstacle handling in the hurdles, a release cue and steering in hammer throw golf, oxygen management in swimming, distance judgment on rooftops, and positioning and stamina in fights.

It helps to learn each event as a separate control set rather than carrying assumptions from one event into the next. For example, A is used to ram hurdles, release a golf swing, or jump/swim in one contributor guide’s water controls. The guides also disagree about ordinary fighting attacks and describe swimming actions differently. Treat the NES mappings below as a practical reference, not a guarantee for every edition or every on-screen situation.

400-meter hurdles: run, jump, slide, or fight

Controls

  • Right: tap repeatedly to run forward.
  • B: jump.
  • A: ram or break hurdles, and handle items.
  • Down: slide under hurdles.
  • Pick up a broken hurdle piece: use A to swing or throw it toward an opponent.
  • Jump, then press A: perform a spin-kick, according to the community FAQ.

Tips

First learn to recognize which obstacles you can jump, ram, or slide under; choosing the right action matters more than attacking indiscriminately. A contributor guide recommends breaking hurdles because they may reveal medals or weapons, then saving more aggressive play for later in the race. Treat that as player advice, not a guaranteed reward: the documented controls establish the available actions, but not a dependable item drop or a tested winning tactic.

The basic objective is to finish the race while navigating obstacles and opponents. If attacks keep costing you progress, prioritize clean movement until the controls feel natural; use item attacks when they help rather than treating every hurdle as an invitation to stop.

A useful beginner sequence is to tap right for forward movement, then choose an obstacle response: jump with B, ram with A, or try down to slide underneath. The race combines movement with interference, so the right response can change with the obstacle and your position. Breaking an obstacle may also create a piece that can be picked up and used, but do not assume that stopping to grab or throw something is always worth the lost forward progress. Try the movement options first, then add attacks once you can handle the course without losing track of your run.

Hammer throw golf: watch the flash, then steer

Controls

  • B: tap rapidly to swing and build power.
  • A: release the hammer.
  • Left and right: influence the hammer’s speed as it approaches the ground and affect its bounce on landing.

Tips

This is not a conventional hammer-throw event. Nintendo describes it as golf played with a throwing hammer: you build power, release, then try to influence the approach and landing. The manual summary says to release when the power bar flashes. Make that visual cue your first priority; releasing too early or too late undermines the launch before steering can help.

After releasing, pay attention to the landing area and use left or right as the hammer nears the ground. The manual summary identifies those directions as affecting speed and bounce, but does not specify a universal direction or timing for every shot. Focus on reading the flight rather than assuming one steering input always produces the longest result.

This event is therefore less about holding a direction throughout and more about separating the sequence into two jobs: build power with repeated B taps, then release with A at the flashing cue; after the release, watch the flight and adjust with left or right near the ground. The manual summary does not provide a fixed steering recipe, so treat the landing as something to observe and learn rather than memorizing an unsupported “always press left” or “always press right” rule. If you are still learning, prioritize spotting the flash before experimenting with steering.

Swimming / Water Slaughter: manage the surface and oxygen

Controls

One 2020 contributor guide gives this event-specific mapping:

  • C Button for GameChat**
  • A: jump or swim.
  • B: punch underwater.
  • Up + B: drag an opponent under.
  • Down at the surface: dive.

A shorter FAQ instead summarizes D-pad movement, A for jumping, and B for attack/breath. These descriptions do not match in every detail, so check the control display in your game if a particular action is unclear.

Tips

Movement is only part of the challenge: you must balance surface and underwater actions with oxygen. The 2020 guide recommends choosing fights when you are ahead on oxygen and being patient rather than taking every exchange. That is a contributor’s tactic, not a tested guarantee; watch your own oxygen situation before committing to an underwater struggle.

Because the two guides do not describe the water controls identically, confirm the control display before relying on a specific action such as breathing or dragging an opponent underwater. The common strategic point is oxygen management: avoid treating every encounter as an automatic fight. A lead on oxygen may give you a better moment to engage, while a low reserve is a reason to be cautious. This is advice from a player guide, not a universal winning formula or a promise that one oxygen threshold guarantees success.

Rooftop jumping: judge the gap and your launch

Controls

  • Forward: tap repeatedly to build speed.
  • B: grab an object and jump, according to the strategy guide.
  • With a pole: hold B, then release to vault.
  • A: dismount from the unicycle.

Tips

Practice the pole release: changing when you let go changes the jump’s distance and height. Use the screen map to estimate the gap between buildings instead of judging the launch by speed alone. The guide recommends the unicycle when a rope crossing is present and the pole when you are unsure; these are contributor recommendations rather than official guarantees.

The result is based on buildings cleared, with time used as a tie-breaker when both players clear the same number. That makes a safe extra building more valuable than merely finishing faster when the building count differs. If your jumps fall short, work on launch timing and distance reading before trying to shave time.

The practical tradeoff is between building speed and choosing a launch that can clear the next gap. The contributor guide says pole release timing changes both height and distance, so use practice runs to notice how your release affects the landing rather than assuming maximum speed alone will solve every jump. The screen map provides a way to estimate gaps, while the rope-crossing recommendation gives you a reason to consider the unicycle in that situation. Neither recommendation is presented as a universal best choice for every rooftop.

Fighting: controls depend on the exchange

Controls and guide differences

The 2020 strategy guide describes several actions: double-tap left or right to dash; during a dash, A performs a jump kick and B performs a shoulder tackle or an item-enabled roll attack. In ordinary exchanges, that guide assigns A to punching and B to kicking, and it also gives separate grapple controls.

A shorter FAQ reverses the ordinary attack labels, listing A as kick and B as punch. Because the two contributor guides conflict, do not rely on a universal A/B attack mapping: check the control display for the version you are playing. The more detailed dash actions above are the strategy guide’s account, not a substitute for that check.

Tips

The strategy guide advises weakening your opponent, watching the PP meter, and attempting grapples when you have a meter advantage. Use that as a starting point, not a proven formula. In practice, pay attention to the meter and your position before committing to a grapple, and use the controls shown in your game to avoid confusing ordinary attacks with dash actions.

The key beginner distinction is that the guide describes different actions for ordinary exchanges and for a dash. Double-tapping a direction is not the same thing as pressing an attack button while standing still. The contributor guide also mentions separate grapple controls, but the available button sequence is not reliable and conflict-free enough to reproduce here. Check the on-screen controls rather than guessing. As in swimming, the PP-meter suggestion is a tactic from a player guide, not proof that a grapple will succeed every time you have an advantage.

NES controls and the Switch edition

Nintendo’s US product page lists Crash’n the Boys Street Challenge as a digital Nintendo Switch release dated April 16, 2020. The listing says it includes the original-graphics version and supports TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, with local single-system play for 1–4 players and online play for 2–4 players. These are specifications on Nintendo’s US listing, accessed October 13, 2026; they should not be read as proof of identical availability or player modes in every region.

The listing confirms that the game is available digitally on Switch, but the NES button descriptions in this guide should not be assumed to be a verified one-to-one mapping for that edition. The in-game control display is the practical reference when playing Switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For TV or tabletop play, a compatible Switch controller is an optional way to play, but Nintendo also lists handheld mode, so a separate controller is not a stated requirement. The official US page is digital product information; it does not verify a current physical cartridge listing, printed guide edition, or retail availability. The Switch listing’s player counts are useful edition specifications, not a claim that every territory offers the same modes.

Quick event reference

Event Main challenge Objective or focus Best beginner cue
400-meter hurdles Movement and obstacle choices Finish while handling hurdles and opponents Learn when to run, jump, ram, or slide
Hammer throw golf Release timing and steering Control the hammer’s flight and landing Release when the power bar flashes
Swimming / Water Slaughter Surface/underwater movement and oxygen Manage oxygen while contesting the water Check oxygen before choosing a fight
Rooftop jumping Speed, gap reading, and launch timing Clear as many buildings as possible; time breaks a tie Use the map and practice pole release timing
Fighting Position, action timing, and PP meter Defeat the opponent Confirm attack buttons in the control display

The event comparison is more useful than looking for one universally strongest approach. Hurdles emphasize forward movement and obstacle choices; hammer throw golf emphasizes a visible release cue and post-release steering; swimming adds oxygen to movement and combat; rooftop jumping rewards distance judgment and launch timing; and fighting depends on positioning, the action being performed, and the PP meter. The sources do not establish a single best character or tactic across all five events.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the controls the same in every event?

No. The NES guide mappings are event-specific: for example, repeated right taps run in hurdles, while repeated B taps build a hammer swing and A releases it in hammer throw golf. Check the controls for the event you are playing.

How do I release the hammer in hammer throw golf?

Tap B rapidly to build power, then press A when the power bar flashes. After releasing, use left or right as the hammer approaches the ground to influence speed and bounce; the manual summary does not give one fixed steering direction for every shot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do NES button instructions definitely match the Switch version?

The available information does not verify every NES input against the Switch control manual. Nintendo’s US listing confirms a digital Switch edition, but use that version’s in-game control display for its specific inputs.

What should I focus on first in swimming?

Learn the event’s controls from the in-game display because contributor guides differ in some details, then pay attention to oxygen. A 2020 player guide recommends choosing fights when ahead on oxygen, but that is advice rather than a guaranteed tactic.

What determines the result in rooftop jumping?

The contributor guide says the number of buildings cleared determines the result, with time used as a tie-breaker if players clear the same number. It recommends reading gaps on the screen map and practicing pole release timing.

Which button punches in the fighting event?

The contributor guides conflict: one assigns A to punching and B to kicking in ordinary exchanges, while another lists A as kick and B as punch. Confirm the mapping in the control display for your version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the Switch edition require a separate controller?

No specific separate controller is stated as required. Nintendo’s US listing includes handheld mode as well as TV and tabletop modes; a compatible controller is only an optional consideration for TV or tabletop play.

The Bottom Line

Learn the controls by event, not by assuming A and B always do the same thing. Start with the clearest cues—tap right to run in hurdles, release the hammer when its power bar flashes, manage oxygen in swimming, and practice rooftop launch timing. Treat contributor tactics as suggestions, and use the in-game control display whenever your version’s inputs or a guide’s mapping is unclear.
