Scientists do not declare a new deep-sea species from a striking video alone. They treat an unusual sighting as a candidate, record where and how it was observed, compare its physical features and sometimes its DNA with known relatives, and publish a description that explains what makes it distinct. Images, specimens, sequences, and collection records let other researchers check and refine the identification.
What counts as discovering a new deep-sea species?
A deep-sea animal can pass through several different stages: it is observed, flagged as unusual, investigated, identified as unfamiliar, and eventually described in a scientific publication. Those stages are not interchangeable. An expedition may document an animal that appears unlike known species without having collected it or completed the work needed to formally describe it.

The key taxonomic question is not simply whether an animal looks strange. Scientists need to establish how it differs from species already described and where it belongs among related organisms. That argument draws on evidence such as anatomy, images, specimen records, and genetic data. Specialists compare the candidate with relevant literature, collections, and known relatives; they may also consult colleagues outside the expedition team.
A published description makes the reasoning reviewable: it lays out diagnostic features and explains the relationship to other organisms. A video sighting, provisional label, or expedition announcement can be an important step, but none automatically amounts to a formal taxonomic description.

How a sighting becomes a scientific lead
1. Observe the animal in its habitat
Deep-sea surveys commonly use remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), which carry cameras into places people cannot readily visit. The footage records animals in place, sometimes alongside their behavior and surroundings. Taxonomic experts may assess animals during a live dive or review the video and collected material afterward.
Video is valuable even when researchers cannot retrieve an animal. It can reveal a candidate species, preserve the circumstances of the encounter, and help experts decide what additional evidence is needed. But camera angle, image resolution, lighting, and the view of an animal’s body can limit what can be identified from footage alone. A distinctive silhouette is a reason to investigate, not proof of novelty.
2. Record where and under what conditions it was seen
An observation becomes more useful when it is tied to its context. Depending on what is available, that record can include the location, latitude and longitude, depth, ocean or region, locality, dive or survey, images, and environmental conditions such as temperature, salinity, and oxygen. NOAA Ocean Exploration’s Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide, Version 4, links records to dive landing pages and lists these kinds of information to the extent known.

A record that says only “unusual worm on video” gives future reviewers far less to work with than one that connects the image to a location, depth, and dive record.

3. Collect a specimen or tissue when feasible
When expedition conditions and the animal allow it, researchers may collect a whole specimen or tissue for closer examination. A specimen can be cataloged and deposited in a research collection, giving other specialists a physical reference to inspect. In NOAA’s investigation of a mysterious golden-orb sample from the Gulf of Alaska, the specimen was accessioned into the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History’s Invertebrate Zoology Collection.
Collection is not always possible or harmless. Delicate animals can be damaged during retrieval, and some are difficult to collect at all. Researchers are developing advanced imaging methods to capture detailed three-dimensional information and preserve tissue from fragile animals, potentially adding evidence where a conventional specimen is hard to obtain. The available account does not establish that these methods replace specimen collection or work equally well for every animal.
How scientists decide whether an animal is new
Compare diagnostic anatomy
Taxonomists look for physical structures that distinguish an organism from its described relatives. They examine the candidate and compare relevant features with scientific descriptions, collections, and expert knowledge. The comparison must do more than point out a general resemblance or an unusual color: it needs to explain which characters are diagnostic and how they differ from those of related species.

Use DNA as complementary evidence
DNA barcoding identifies an organism by comparing a short sequence from a particular gene with reference sequences. NOAA Ocean Exploration’s 2024 explanation describes its uses in distinguishing species, identifying larval or juvenile stages, and contributing evidence to new-species descriptions. It can be especially helpful when life stages look different or when morphology alone leaves uncertainty.
A barcode result depends on the quality of the comparison. The reference sequence needs a reliable identification, and the sequence must be interpreted in light of the organism and the taxonomic question. A match is not an automatic verdict, and a barcode without a useful reference may not resolve an identity.
The golden-orb case shows why researchers combine methods. In a 2025 account, NOAA described how the initial DNA barcode was inconclusive, likely because DNA from microscopic organisms on the sample complicated the result. Morphological examination found stinging cells characteristic of a cnidarian group. Deeper sequencing and mitochondrial comparison then associated the sample with the known giant anemone Relicanthus daphneae; the investigation did not establish a new species. Allen Collins, director of NOAA Fisheries’ National Systematics Laboratory, called it “a complex mystery that required morphological, genetic, deep-sea and bioinformatics expertise to solve.”

How eDNA surveys add a different kind of evidence
Environmental DNA is genetic material that organisms shed into their surroundings. Unlike barcoding a tissue sample from an individual animal, an eDNA survey starts with environmental material such as water. NOAA Ocean Exploration’s 2025 description traces a workflow from collecting water with an ROV and CTD rosette through filtration, preservation, extract cataloging, sequencing, taxonomic assignment, and standardized public release.

Once sequenced, the genetic traces are compared with taxonomic references. This can help detect organisms that are difficult to see or collect and can describe the community represented in a sample. The result concerns genetic material present in the sampled water; it does not necessarily show which individual produced it or provide the physical features needed to distinguish and formally describe a species. eDNA supports biodiversity identification and monitoring, but it is not a shortcut around taxonomic comparison.

Once experts have assessed the evidence, the central task is to make a defensible case for distinction and placement among related organisms. A formal paper explains the important morphological features and/or DNA evidence, describes differences from related species, and sets out the organism’s place in the tree of life. Researchers may confirm their interpretation with other specialists before publication.
That documentation should connect the conclusions to evidence that others can review: images, a specimen or sequence record where available, collection or observation location and depth, and the relevant dive or sampling information. NOAA’s identification guide follows taxonomic classification from the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS); NOAA says entries may be corrected after expert reports and updated to reflect taxonomic revisions and new descriptions accepted in WoRMS. Classification is therefore capable of changing as evidence and expert assessments develop.

The path depends on evidence, specialist expertise, and the work required to compare the candidate with its relatives. Some encounters remain documented observations while further investigation is needed.

Examples show why the stages should not be collapsed
Biremis in the Gulf of California
In MBARI’s 2022 account, researchers encountered unusual pom-pom-like masses on the Gulf of California seafloor. Closer examination and DNA testing with Scripps collaborators led them to recognize a species of Biremis, a genus previously known from the Bahamas, that was new to science. The sequence matters: the unusual sighting prompted examination and genetic work; the appearance alone did not establish the identification.

NOAA’s 2025 account follows a different outcome. The collected sample initially resisted identification by barcode. Anatomical evidence and deeper genetic comparison ultimately associated it with a known giant anemone rather than demonstrating a new species. The case illustrates that an investigation can resolve a mystery without producing a new name.
Documented species on a 2025 South Atlantic expedition
MBARI reported that the Designing the Future 3 expedition in the tropical South Atlantic documented more than 30 new species using imaging systems and AI tools. That is the expedition report’s count of species documented, not evidence that every one already had a final published taxonomic name. Documentation can mark substantial progress while formal descriptions remain a separate stage.

Why records remain open to correction
Taxonomic records are useful when they make the chain of evidence traceable. NOAA’s guide links animal entries with identification details and, where available, dive records and environmental fields. Experts can report errors, and classifications can be revised when new evidence or taxonomic descriptions are accepted. A scientific identification is not a label immune to change; its value lies in the evidence and reasoning that can be revisited.
Counts of discoveries also need their dates and definitions. MBARI reported more than 240 new species discovered by its researchers over 35 years, including 30 new worms, in a 2022 article. In a circa-2018 MBARI account, biologist Linda Kuhnz estimated that more than 200 species had been discovered through MBARI research, with over 130 formally named and at least another 70 awaiting formal names. These are historical institutional counts with different scopes and terms, not a single current census. NOAA Ocean Exploration reported more than 3,000 identified deep-sea coral species in a guide update account circa 2023; that figure likewise belongs to that resource’s date and scope.
