Self-hosting
Self-hosting gives you control over files, Java settings, backups, ports and hardware. Install with a managed control panel
- Choose a plan. Start with enough memory for your expected players, not just the smallest plan advertised for modded Minecraft.
- Open the modpack installer. Search for the full pack name, Create 2 Mekanism: Sky Edition 2, rather than selecting a similarly named Create or Mekanism pack.
- Select the release. Choose release 0.9.9 when it is available and verify that the panel identifies Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge 47.3.10.
- Install and let the server restart. Do not connect while the panel is still downloading, expanding or generating files.

Prepare a clean server directory

Make the server reachable
- For a home server, allow the server port through the operating system firewall and configure router port forwarding only if players are connecting from outside your network.
- Give players the correct public address and port; never publish your administrative credentials.
- Use a whitelist while testing. Add players after they have installed the matching client files.
- Stop the server from its console before replacing mods, configs or world files. Copying files while the process is running can corrupt the world.
How much RAM should you allocate?
There is no author-published minimum in the available documentation. Provider recommendations are starting points, not guarantees: FadeHost describes 4 GB as a general minimum for modded servers and 6–8 GB for heavier packs; WinterNode recommends 8 GB and calls 6–8 GB typical depending on player count and view distance. Automation-heavy bases, chunk loaders, large numbers of entities, high simulation or view distance, exploration that keeps new chunks loaded, and several players entering different dimensions can all increase demand. More RAM cannot compensate for a weak CPU or a slow disk. Leave memory for the operating system and other services rather than assigning every available gigabyte to Java.
Signs that the allocation is too low
- The process repeatedly reports out-of-memory errors or exits during startup.
- Garbage-collection pauses become long and frequent, causing players to freeze.
- Tick time rises as farms, machines and loaded chunks increase.
- The server performs acceptably with one player but stalls when several players explore or operate factories.
Increase memory in measured steps, then retest the same workload. Also lower view and simulation distance, remove unnecessary chunk loaders and investigate entity-heavy farms; these changes can help more than simply adding RAM.
Make every client match the server
Every player needs the same pack release, Minecraft version and Forge loader. A client on another release may fail during the handshake, disconnect with a missing-mod message or enter a world with incompatible registries.

- Have players install the same release before they connect.
- Start the server and inspect the console for missing mods, registry errors and world-conversion messages.
- Join with one test account before reopening the server.
Common failures and fixes
“Incompatible FML modded server” or missing-mod disconnect
Compare the client’s pack release, Minecraft version and Forge build with the server. Remove manually added client mods and reinstall the pack profile if its files have been edited.
Server stops during startup
Check the first meaningful error in the log rather than the final cascade of failures. Confirm that the Forge server loader, Java runtime and pack files are appropriate for Minecraft 1.20.1. If you copied a client folder, rebuild the directory from a verified server method or bundle.
Severe lag after factories grow
Watch tick-time or TPS data while reproducing the problem. Reduce view and simulation distance, limit chunk loaders, spread machines across fewer constantly loaded areas and inspect entity-heavy farms. Add RAM only after checking CPU saturation and storage performance.

Players cannot connect from outside the host network
Verify the address and port, firewall rule and router forwarding. A managed host normally supplies the endpoint; a home server may also be behind carrier-grade NAT, in which case ordinary port forwarding will not work without a suitable alternative network arrangement.
