Block patterns are reusable groups of WordPress blocks. Build a layout once, save it as a pattern, and insert it whenever you need the same structure. Choose an unsynced pattern when each insertion should receive its own copy, or a synced pattern when one edit must update every instance. You can create and manage patterns in the editor, ship them from a theme or plugin, and share portable designs through the official Pattern Directory.

What a WordPress block pattern is
A block pattern is a saved collection of blocks that can be inserted into posts and pages, then customized with your own content. Instead of rebuilding a hero section, feature grid, call-to-action panel, announcement, or footer notice each time, you assemble the blocks once and reuse that arrangement.

A pattern can contain core blocks such as Group, Columns, Image, Heading, Buttons, and Query Loop. After insertion, those blocks remain available for normal editing unless the pattern is synchronized.
Patterns solve two different problems:
- Composition: start new pages with a proven arrangement of blocks.
- Consistency: keep content or design elements uniform across many locations.
The important decision is whether the saved design should make independent copies or remain connected to one shared source.

Unsynced and synced patterns: choose before you save
WordPress offers two behaviors. The choice affects every future insertion, so decide based on the content rather than on the visual design alone.
| Pattern type | What happens when inserted | Best uses | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unsynced | Each insertion becomes an independent set of blocks. Editing one copy does not change the others. | Hero sections, article introductions, feature grids, and calls to action that need page-specific text, images, or links. | You must update each copy separately when the underlying design changes. |
| Synced | Insertions share the pattern’s content. Editing the pattern changes every place where it is used. | Legal notices, contact details, standardized announcements, or any message that must be identical everywhere. | A change is global. A local variation requires detaching that instance. |
Synchronization is about shared content, not merely shared styling. A synced pattern gives you central maintenance, but an accidental edit can affect every page using it. An unsynced pattern gives editors local control, but consistency depends on people updating copies correctly.

You can create a pattern from a single block or from a group of blocks. Build the complete arrangement first, including the placeholder text, images, buttons, spacing, and other settings you want future users to inherit.
- Build the layout. Add the core blocks you need, such as Group, Columns, Image, Heading, Buttons, or Query Loop. Configure alignment, colors, typography, spacing, and links as appropriate for the design.
- Select what should be reusable. Select one block, or select several blocks and place them in a Group so the whole section can be saved together. The selection should include every element that belongs to the reusable design.
- Open the More menu. With the block or group selected, open the three-dot More menu in the block toolbar.
- Choose “Create pattern/reusable block.” The wording can vary slightly by WordPress version, but the command is in the block’s More menu.
- Name the pattern. Use a descriptive name that tells another editor what the pattern contains and where it belongs. Names such as “Article intro — dark,” “Support contact notice,” or “Product launch hero” are easier to search than “New pattern.”
- Decide whether to enable Sync. Enable Sync only when one canonical edit should propagate to every insertion. Leave it disabled when each page needs its own copy.
- Click Create. WordPress saves the pattern to the site’s pattern library. An unsynced result appears with your other personal patterns; a synced result is available in the synced-pattern area of the inserter.
Use names and categories as part of the design system, not as an afterthought. A clear name reduces duplicate patterns and helps editors distinguish a global notice from a starting layout that is safe to customize.
How to insert and use a pattern
- Open the Block Inserter while editing a post, page, template, or other block-enabled area.
- Choose Patterns. Synced items are available under Synced Patterns.
- Browse by category, search by name, or choose Explore for a larger pattern browser.
- Click a pattern to insert it at the selected location, or drag it into the editor.
An inserted unsynced pattern behaves like ordinary blocks. Replace its text, images, links, and styles for the page you are working on. The copy no longer depends on the saved pattern, so later changes to the saved design do not rewrite that page.

A synced pattern remains connected to its source. WordPress may present a content-only editing experience so editors can change permitted content without immediately changing the whole design. When you need to alter the structure or unlock full editing, use the pattern’s Edit pattern control.
How to change a synced pattern safely
Use the pattern’s edit control when the change is intended for every use. Save the change only after checking that the wording, links, images, and layout are correct for all contexts where the pattern appears.
If one page needs a different version, select the inserted synced pattern and choose Detach pattern. That instance becomes regular blocks. You can then edit its text, images, links, or layout without affecting the original pattern or other pages. Detaching is one-way for that instance: later edits to the synced source will no longer reach it.
- Use Edit pattern for a deliberate global update.
- Use Detach pattern for a deliberate local exception.
- Do not detach merely to change page copy unless you are comfortable losing future global updates for that instance.
Manage saved patterns
In a block-enabled site, open Appearance → Editor → Patterns. From the Block Editor, the equivalent command is Options → Manage Patterns. The management screen provides the controls needed to keep a growing library usable.
- Rename: clarify a vague title without rebuilding the pattern.
- Duplicate: create a starting point for a related design while preserving the original.
- Edit: change the saved pattern, including the structure and content of a synced pattern.
- Export as JSON: create a portable representation that can be moved or stored with project files.
- Delete: remove a pattern that is obsolete. Check existing content first, especially when it is synced, so you understand the effect on pages that use it.
Keep names descriptive and assign meaningful categories. Categories make the inserter searchable and help editors distinguish, for example, a “Banners” collection from “Footers” or “Text” layouts. A small library with clear naming is easier to govern than a large library of near-duplicates.

| Approach | Where it lives | Strengths | Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Editor-created | The site’s pattern library, managed in the editor. | Fast to build, immediately visible to content teams, and easy to adapt for a specific site. | Changes are managed in the site interface rather than in a theme or plugin codebase. |
| Theme file | A valid pattern file in the active theme’s /patterns directory. |
Simple distribution with the theme; WordPress discovers and registers the file automatically when its pattern header is valid. | The pattern travels with the theme and should be maintained alongside the theme’s files. |
| PHP registration | Code that calls register_block_pattern(). |
Supports conditional registration, custom categories, contextual patterns, and pattern transformations. | Requires a unique namespace/slug, valid properties, and a development workflow for testing and deployment. |
Package a pattern in a theme
The straightforward theme workflow is to add a valid pattern file under the active theme’s /patterns directory. WordPress recognizes files in that directory and registers them automatically when they contain a valid pattern file header.
The file should describe the pattern’s human-readable title and other metadata in the format expected by the Theme Handbook, followed by the block markup that makes up the design. Use core blocks when portability matters, and test the result with the theme’s typography, colors, spacing, and responsive behavior. A pattern that relies on a custom block will not be fully portable to a site where that block is unavailable.
Theme packaging is a good fit when the pattern is part of the theme’s visual system and should be delivered with that theme. Keep the file under version control so edits can be reviewed, reverted, and deployed with the rest of the theme.
Register a pattern with PHP
Use register_block_pattern( $pattern_name, $pattern_properties ) when registration needs logic that a static theme file cannot provide. The name should use a unique namespace and slug to avoid collisions. The properties include the block content, a human-readable title, and one or more categories; an optional screen-reader description can explain the pattern’s purpose.
A minimal registration has four conceptual parts:
- Choose a namespace and slug. Use a project-specific namespace followed by a descriptive slug.
- Provide the block content. Store valid block markup that represents the complete pattern.
- Add display metadata. Supply the title, categories, and, when useful, an accessible description.
- Register at the appropriate time. Hook registration into the normal block or initialization flow used by the theme or plugin so WordPress knows about the pattern before the inserter is rendered.
The Block Editor APIs also support unregistering individual patterns and removing core pattern support. Those controls are useful when a project needs a tightly curated inserter rather than every available design. Use them carefully: removing a pattern from the inserter is a governance decision, while existing content may still contain blocks that came from an earlier pattern.

Core blocks and custom blocks: the portability decision
A pattern made only from core blocks is generally easier to move between sites because the receiving site already provides those block types. A pattern that includes a custom block can offer specialized behavior, but the destination must have that block available and compatible.
- Choose core blocks for designs intended to be copied, exported, shared, or distributed broadly.
- Use custom blocks when the design depends on functionality that core blocks cannot provide and the required plugin or theme is controlled as part of the project.
- Document dependencies in the pattern description or project documentation so another editor does not insert a design that cannot render correctly.
Find and share patterns through the Pattern Directory
The official WordPress Pattern Directory can be searched by keyword or category. Its categories include Posts, Text, Gallery, Call to Action, Banners, Headers, Footers, and Wireframe. The directory displayed 2,375 patterns on WordPress.org at the time of the 2026 check; that number is a live snapshot and can change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Directory patterns are intended to be copied or referenced across sites, which makes them useful when you need a starting layout rather than a site-specific global component. Review every inserted block before publishing: replace demonstration copy, verify links, check images and accessibility settings, and confirm that the design still fits your theme.
To submit a pattern, follow the directory’s official submission guidance. Submissions can use core blocks and must follow the directory’s restrictions. Those rules reduce dependencies on site-specific custom blocks and make shared patterns more portable.

A reusable article introduction
Create an unsynced pattern containing a Group, Heading, short paragraph, and optional Image. Each article can then replace the heading, summary, and image while retaining the same spacing and hierarchy. Do not sync it: the copy is expected to differ from article to article.
A site-wide contact notice
Create a synced pattern with the approved contact details, hours, and link to the contact page. When the phone number or office hours change, edit the pattern once. Every insertion receives the update, avoiding a search through individual pages.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
A campaign call to action
Start with an unsynced pattern if each landing page has its own headline, destination, and supporting image. If the campaign message must remain identical across every placement, use a synced pattern instead and plan who is authorized to edit it.
Governance and maintenance
Patterns become a design system only when the team agrees on ownership and naming. Decide which patterns are safe for routine content editing and which require an administrator or developer.
- Prefix names with a functional area when the library is large, such as “News,” “Support,” or “Commerce.”
- Reserve synced patterns for content that truly has one source of truth.
- Keep unsynced patterns focused on structure so editors can adapt copy without creating unnecessary global dependencies.
- Remove duplicates and obsolete designs from the management screen.
- For code-managed patterns, review changes in version control and test after theme or plugin updates.
- When exporting JSON, store it with the project files and record which blocks or categories the pattern requires.
Troubleshooting common pattern problems
The pattern is not in the inserter
Check whether you are looking under Patterns or Synced Patterns, then search by the exact name. If it is a theme pattern, verify that the file is in the active theme’s /patterns directory and that its pattern header is valid. For PHP registration, confirm the registration code runs and that the pattern name, title, categories, and content are valid.
An edit changed every page
The inserted item is synced. If the change was intended to be global, keep it and check all affected contexts. If only one page should differ, undo the global edit when appropriate, reinsert or restore the correct version, and use Detach pattern on the page that needs a local variation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA local copy no longer receives updates
That is expected after detaching. The instance is now regular blocks. Reinsert the synced pattern if it should reconnect to the shared source, then make only changes that are appropriate for every use.
The design looks wrong on another site
Check for custom blocks, theme-specific styles, missing images, and differences in typography or spacing settings. Rebuild the pattern with core blocks when broad portability is required, or document the required theme or plugin dependency.
Which workflow should you use?
Use the editor for a site-local pattern that a content team needs immediately. Use a theme file when the design belongs to the theme and should ship automatically with it. Use PHP registration when you need conditional logic, custom categories, contextual behavior, transformations, or a curated inserter. Within any workflow, make the synced-versus-unsynced decision based on whether the content has one canonical source.
That distinction keeps patterns predictable: unsynced patterns accelerate page composition, while synced patterns centralize maintenance. Both remain editable block layouts rather than fixed images, so editors can work at the level of individual blocks whenever the chosen synchronization behavior permits it.
