Identify the server’s exact Minecraft release and loader first, download the Create file built for that combination, install the modded loader on the server, put Create in /mods, and launch the loader JAR rather than the vanilla server JAR. Then make the client’s complete mod set compatible with the server’s set and fix the first meaningful dependency error in the log.

Create is a multiplayer mod: it must load on both sides. A client that starts successfully can still be unable to join a server whose loader, Create build, addon, or dependency set differs.

Before replacing files or changing performance settings, record four values from the server and the client:
- the exact Minecraft version;
- the loader and loader version (Forge, NeoForge, or a Fabric installation using a compatible Create port);
- the exact Create JAR filename;
- every addon and dependency JAR installed on each side.
Create releases are not interchangeable. A Forge or NeoForge JAR is not a Fabric JAR, and a file built for one Minecraft release should not be used on another. The Create project page lists files by Minecraft version and loader; select the file whose labels match the server exactly.

There is no evidence-based universal performance winner among these loaders. The practical choice is the loader your server host supports and for which every player can install the same Minecraft version, loader, Create build, addons, and dependencies.
Install Create on the server, not only the client
Installing Create in a launcher’s client profile enables single-player, but it does not install the mod on a dedicated server. The server must run the modded loader and load Create from its own /mods directory.

forge-[...].jarand notminecraft_server.jarand that the Create mod is inside the server’s/modsfolder.”
Use this clean installation sequence:
- Stop the server and make a world backup. Do not replace mod files while the world is running.
- Confirm the Minecraft release and loader. Use the same values shown by the host panel or the loader startup banner. If the host controls the loader, select a server image for that exact release rather than uploading an unrelated JAR.
- Install the matching server loader. Run the Forge or NeoForge server installer, or follow the Fabric server-loader procedure for the chosen Fabric release. The installation should create the loader’s server launch files alongside the vanilla files.
- Place Create in the server’s
/modsdirectory. Copy the downloaded JAR itself; do not unzip it and do not leave it only in a client-side launcher folder. - Add every required dependency. Read the dependency list for that exact Create file and filter downloads by both the selected loader and Minecraft release.
- Launch the loader server JAR. For Forge, this is the generated
forge-[...] .jarstyle launch file identified by the installer, notminecraft_server.jar. Use the equivalent loader-generated launch command for NeoForge or Fabric. - Install the matching files on each client. Every player needs the same loader family, Minecraft release, Create build, and any server-required addons or libraries.
- Start once and read the console. If loading stops, fix the first dependency or compatibility error before changing anything else.
Some hosting panels expose separate “vanilla” and “modded” startup profiles. Selecting a Create JAR while leaving the profile on vanilla still starts a server that cannot load the mod. Verify the startup log names the intended loader.

Make the client and server mod sets compatible
Multiplayer checks more than whether a file named Create exists. A client may launch while the dedicated server fails, or the server may boot while the client is rejected, when any of these differ:
- Minecraft version;
- loader family or loader version;
- Create version;
- an addon version;
- a required dependency or its version range;
- whether a mod is marked as client-only, server-only, or required on both sides.
Compare the exact JAR filenames, not just the display names in a launcher. A filename containing a different Minecraft release or loader suffix is a useful lead. Remove duplicate older copies from /mods; two Create builds in the same directory can produce a conflict even when one appears correct.

When single-player works but joining fails
Single-player tests the client’s local installation. It does not prove that the server has Create, that the server uses the same loader, or that the network handshake accepts the client’s addons. Check the server’s /mods directory and startup profile first, then compare the client and server lists side by side. Do not begin by lowering render distance or disabling shaders; those settings do not repair a loader or dependency mismatch.
When the server starts but the client is rejected
The server may have loaded successfully while the client is missing a required mod or is carrying a different build. Read the disconnect message and the client log, then match the named mod and version. If the message identifies a side requirement, install the mod on the side specified by the loader rather than copying every client utility to the server.

Resolve dependencies instead of bypassing them
Create’s dependency metadata tells the loader which project IDs, version ranges, and sides are valid. Forge checks dependency IDs, whether each dependency is mandatory, its allowed version range, and whether it is required on the client, server, or both. Fabric’s installation guidance likewise directs users to inspect each project’s required dependencies and filter downloads by Fabric and Minecraft version.
Read the dependency error literally
A message naming a missing mod means that JAR is absent from the side where it is required. A message naming an unsupported version means the installed file falls outside the declared range. A client/server-side message means the mod is present on the wrong side or is missing from the side that must load it. Install the correct release rather than grabbing the newest file without checking its Minecraft and loader labels.
What “incomplete set of tags” usually means
“Incomplete set of tags” indicates that the game is seeing different registry or tag data during loading. Treat it as a compatibility clue: compare Minecraft, loader, Create, addon, and dependency versions on both sides, and remove duplicate or stale JARs. The first earlier error in the same log often identifies the missing or incompatible component that caused the tag mismatch. If the message appears after a world was created with a different mod set, test a backed-up copy with the corrected files before opening the original world.
Do not use dependency overrides as a normal repair
Fabric documents dependency overrides as an advanced tool for modpack developers. It warns regular players not to use them as a first-line fix. An override can suppress the declaration without making incompatible code work, so prefer the maintained file whose requirements already match your loader and Minecraft release. Report an upstream incompatibility when no compatible file exists instead of forcing the game past its checks.

Use the log in the right order
Loader logs can contain a long cascade of secondary failures. Start at the first meaningful error after the launch banner and classify it:
- Wrong loader: the file targets Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge differently from the running server. Replace it with the matching port or change the server loader.
- Wrong Minecraft release: download a Create build labeled for the server’s exact release.
- Missing dependency: install the named project on the side and version required by the message.
- Version range failure: replace the dependency or Create file with one inside the declared range.
- Wrong side: follow the loader’s client/server requirement instead of copying a client-only library to the server.
- Duplicate or stale file: stop the server, remove older copies, and leave one intended version of each mod.
Restart after fixing one category, then read the next first error. Changing several unrelated settings at once makes it impossible to tell which change solved the problem and can conceal the original mismatch.
Check Java and the server environment
Java requirements depend on the Minecraft and loader release. Forge’s current getting-started documentation specifies a 64-bit JVM and Java 21 JDK for its documented toolchain, while also recommending dedicated-server testing. That does not make Java 21 a universal requirement for every Create installation: use the loader documentation for the exact Minecraft release in use.
- Confirm the host is using a 64-bit Java runtime, not a 32-bit executable.
- Check the Java major version selected in the hosting panel or startup script.
- Use a JDK version supported by the chosen loader and Minecraft release.
- Restart the server after changing Java so the new runtime is actually used.
- If the log reports an unsupported class-file version or an unavailable Java runtime, correct Java before investigating Create.
Java problems generally appear before mod dependency checks. A server that never reaches the loader banner has an environment or launch problem, not a Create recipe problem.
Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric: how to choose

Choose the path with a maintained Create file for your Minecraft release and a server host that lets you run that loader. If a modpack already specifies one loader, changing loaders usually means replacing every mod with files built for the new ecosystem.

Symptom-by-symptom fixes
The server closes immediately after launch
- Confirm you launched the loader-generated server file rather than the vanilla JAR.
- Check that the Java major version and 64-bit requirement match the loader documentation.
- Read the first dependency or unsupported-version error.
- Remove duplicate Create files and retry with only the intended build and its required dependencies.
The server starts, but Create blocks or machines are missing
Verify that the startup log actually loaded Create and that the client joined with the same build. If only an addon’s blocks are missing, check that addon’s own Minecraft, loader, and Create requirements; an addon built for another Create line may fail independently of the base mod.

The client reports a mismatched mod list
Export or list the client and server /mods contents, compare filenames, and correct the named difference. Pay attention to loader libraries and required dependencies, not only the Create JAR.
A world loads in single-player but not on the server
Test with a backup and the corrected, identical mod set. A world saved with blocks or data from an absent addon may not open safely when that addon is removed; restore the addon or use the modpack version that created the world.
A repeatable clean-room test
When repeated edits have left uncertainty, isolate the installation:

- Back up the world, server configuration, and existing
/modsdirectory. - Create a temporary server directory for the same Minecraft release and loader.
- Install only the loader, the matching Create file, and the dependencies it declares.
- Launch the temporary server with the loader JAR and confirm it reaches a ready state.
- Install the identical minimal set in a fresh client profile and connect locally.
- Add addons one at a time, restarting and checking the first new error after each addition.
- Once the minimal set works, migrate the backed-up world and configuration, keeping the known-good JAR filenames.
This process separates a broken base installation from an addon or old-world problem without destroying the original data.
What to verify before asking for help
- Exact Minecraft version and loader name/version;
- the Create filename on the client and server;
- the complete addon and dependency lists;
- the server startup JAR or hosting profile selected;
- the Java major version and whether the JVM is 64-bit;
- the first meaningful error and the few lines immediately around it;
- whether the failure occurs during server startup, client startup, or the connection handshake.
That information lets a maintainer distinguish a missing file from an unsupported combination instead of guessing from a generic “Create is not working” report.
