To prevent unauthenticated players from joining, edit the ServerConfig.toml used by your running BeamMP server and set AllowGuests = false in the [General] section. Save the file, then restart the server. BeamMP will apply the admission rule when the process starts with that configuration.

The direct fix: set AllowGuests to false
BeamMP exposes guest access as a server-wide configuration option. In the active ServerConfig.toml, locate (or create) the [General] section and use this exact TOML entry:

AllowGuests = false
false must be the TOML boolean value, not a quoted string. Keep the key spelling and capitalization exactly as shown. If the file already contains AllowGuests, change its value instead of adding a second copy. Duplicate keys can make a configuration invalid or produce an unexpected result.
After saving, restart the BeamMP server process. Editing a file does not retroactively reload the configuration in a process that is already running. The restart is therefore part of the change, not an optional final step.

Find the configuration file that the server is actually using
A common cause of “the setting did nothing” is editing a different copy of the file. BeamMP uses the server process’s working directory to resolve its configuration file, logs, and Resources folder. The file next to an executable is not necessarily the file used by the process if a shortcut, service, script, panel, or launch tool starts the server with another working directory.
Normal first-start layout
For a standard home installation, the server creates ServerConfig.toml beside the server executable after its first startup. This is the expected starting point, but confirm that the launcher you use starts that same installation and directory.
Check the launch context
- Identify the executable, shortcut, script, service, or hosting panel that starts BeamMP.
- Determine the working directory configured for that launch method.
- Open the
ServerConfig.tomlin that directory and compare its nearby logs andResourcestree with the files being updated while the server runs. - Make the edit only in the copy belonging to the process you intend to change.
The current format is ServerConfig.toml. Do not spend time changing an old Server.cfg; BeamMP’s current documentation uses the TOML file, and the legacy filename is no longer the active format.
Safe step-by-step procedure
- Stop the server. Shut down the BeamMP process cleanly, or otherwise ensure it is not writing the configuration while you edit it. Keeping a copy of the original file before changing it gives you a quick rollback.
- Open the active file. Use a plain-text editor to open the
ServerConfig.tomlresolved from the running process’s working directory. - Locate
[General]. Scroll to that table header. TOML section names are significant, so the setting must be inside[General], not under an unrelated section. - Add or change the key. Enter
AllowGuests = false. Use a single equals sign, leavefalseunquoted, and preserve the capitalization ofAllowGuests. - Save without changing the format. Do not save the file as rich text or rename it. Preserve the
.tomlextension and the rest of the server’s settings. - Start or restart BeamMP. Launch the same server instance that owns the file you edited.
- Verify operationally. Attempt a connection with a client that would otherwise join as a guest, and inspect the server log for the connection result. This is an administrator check; the configuration itself does not provide a claimed test result until you perform it.
If you need to undo the change, stop the server, restore the previous value (or set AllowGuests = true), save, and restart again. Keep only one active definition of the key.
What BeamMP means by a guest
BeamMP’s server-side authentication API describes guests as players who did not log in with a BeamMP account. They are anonymous to the server, which is why the authentication callback exposes a guest flag alongside the player’s name, role, and identifiers.

Setting AllowGuests = false is the broad, configuration-level decision: anonymous users are not admitted. It does not require you to write Lua, maintain a resource, or provide a custom message. For a private server that simply requires account authentication, this is normally the smallest control surface.

BeamMP also lets a server resource make an admission decision in the onPlayerAuth hook. The hook receives the player name, player role, guest status, and identifiers. Returning a string rejects the connection and displays that message to the player. The official server-side Lua example is:
function onPlayerAuth(playerName, playerRole, isGuest, identifiers)
if isGuest then
return "No guests allowed, please use a BeamMP account"
end
end
The scripting reference may describe the guest argument as is_guest; the published hook example uses the Lua parameter name isGuest. Follow the parameter form used by the API version and example installed with your server, rather than inventing a new event name. The important operation is testing the Boolean guest flag during onPlayerAuth.
When the hook is useful
- Custom feedback: You can tell a rejected player why authentication is required instead of relying only on the generic connection result.
- Additional admission logic: The callback can examine the values supplied to it and apply rules beyond the simple global switch, provided your code follows BeamMP’s current API.
- Centralized policy in a resource: A server that already manages authentication in Lua may prefer one visible policy in its resource files.
Lua enforcement is not a replacement for correcting a misplaced configuration file. Treat it as an intentional second layer or as a customization mechanism, not as evidence that the server loaded the wrong ServerConfig.toml.
Checking and removing guests after they connect
The scripting reference documents MP.IsPlayerGuest(player_id) for checking whether an already connected player is a guest. It also documents MP.DropPlayer(player_id, reason) for removing a player and supplying a reason. These functions are useful for a resource that audits connections or reacts to a policy change while the server is running.

local playerId = 42
if MP.IsPlayerGuest(playerId) then
MP.DropPlayer(playerId, "Guests are not permitted on this server")
end
The numeric ID in this illustrative fragment must come from the player event or API context in your resource; it is not a universal guest ID. The preferred prevention point remains onPlayerAuth, because it can reject a guest before that player is admitted. A post-connection check is a separate response for a player who is already present.
Configuration versus Lua versus a community resource
Choose the least complicated layer that meets your policy. The following comparison separates the documented capabilities rather than promising a particular behavior from an untested installation.
| Approach | Configuration simplicity | Rejection message | Enforcement timing | Maintenance burden | Third-party code |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
AllowGuests = false |
One setting in ServerConfig.toml |
No custom message supplied by the setting | Global server admission policy after restart | Low: retain the setting when updating the server configuration | No |
onPlayerAuth hook |
Requires a server Lua resource | Yes; return a message string | Authentication callback, before admission is completed | Requires checking the script against API and server updates | Your own Lua resource, not an external package |
| Community GuestControl resource | Install and configure a resource | Depends on the resource’s current implementation | Depends on that resource’s hooks | Must review files and compatibility after server updates | Yes |
For the community option, the GuestControl repository describes a resource intended to disallow guests and instructs administrators to install it under Resources/Server. It is third-party code, so inspect its current files, understand what it executes, and verify compatibility with your BeamMP server version before deployment. Do not treat its existence as a guarantee that it matches your setup.
Install a Lua resource in the right place
Server-side Lua resources belong under the server’s Resources/Server tree. The exact folder name and resource manifest must match the structure required by the BeamMP server version you run. After placing or changing a resource:
- Confirm the resource is inside the active server directory, not a similarly named client or backup directory.
- Check that its files and manifest are in the resource’s expected layout.
- Restart the BeamMP server so it discovers the resource.
- Read the startup log for resource-loading errors before testing authentication.
- Connect with a guest-capable client and inspect the log and client-facing message.
If the resource fails to load, remove or disable it while diagnosing the basic configuration. A malformed plugin should not obscure whether AllowGuests = false works in the active file.

Troubleshooting: why guests can still join
You edited the wrong file
Re-check the process’s working directory. If the server is launched by a shortcut, script, service, or control panel, it may point to a different installation than the folder you opened manually. The configuration, logs, and Resources directory should belong to the same working directory.
The key is outside [General]
Move the entry into the [General] table. A correctly spelled key in the wrong TOML section is not equivalent to the documented setting.
The value is not valid TOML
Use AllowGuests = false, not AllowGuests = "false", AllowGuests: false, or a differently capitalized key. Remove duplicate definitions and check for accidental smart quotes introduced by a word processor.

BeamMP’s current configuration format is ServerConfig.toml. Changes to Server.cfg will not configure a current server process.
The process was never restarted
Stop and start the exact server instance after saving. If a hosting panel reports a restart but the old process remains, confirm in the log that a new process started and read the configuration from the expected directory.

The Lua resource is in the wrong tree
Move server code into the active Resources/Server tree, then restart and inspect resource-loading messages. A file stored in a client resources directory, a backup directory, or another BeamMP installation will not enforce server authentication.
The plugin loads but the hook does not reject
Verify that the callback is named onPlayerAuth, that the guest argument is tested, and that the function returns a string when isGuest is true. Also check the server log for Lua errors. For an already connected player, use the documented player-check and drop functions rather than expecting an authentication callback to run again.
How to verify the policy without guessing
Verification should test the admission path your players use, not merely whether the file contains the expected text.
- Record which working directory and configuration file the server uses.
- Stop the process before editing and restart it afterward.
- Use a client that is not logged into a BeamMP account, where such a test account is available to you.
- Observe whether the connection is refused and capture the server log entry.
- If a Lua message is configured, confirm that the client sees that returned reason.
- Repeat with a properly authenticated account to ensure the policy did not unintentionally block the users you intend to allow.
The last check is important when you add custom Lua conditions. The global setting expresses one rule—guests are disallowed—whereas custom code can introduce additional conditions that need their own testing.
Recommended setup for most private servers
Start with the native setting:
[General]
AllowGuests = false
This avoids an extra dependency and makes the policy visible in the server’s primary configuration. Add an onPlayerAuth resource only when you need a tailored rejection message or logic that the global switch cannot express. Consider a community resource only after reviewing its source and confirming that its installation path and API assumptions match your server version.
Keep an administrator note of the active working directory and the reason for the setting. That small piece of documentation prevents future edits to a dormant copy when you move the server, change a launcher, or maintain more than one BeamMP instance.
