Yes. Critical Role’s Daggerheart Open Beta Playtest was free when it began on March 12, 2024: participants could download and print PDFs, playtest the rules, and send feedback through official surveys. The official FAQ now says the playtest is closed, so the old announcement is not an invitation to join today.
What the free Daggerheart beta included
Darrington Press announced the Open Beta Playtest for March 12, 2024. The offer was access to playtest materials, not a requirement to buy the released game: participants could download the PDFs, print them, try the game, and submit feedback through official surveys. Darrington Press’s March 12 announcement and Critical Role’s beta announcement describe those options.

Can you still join or play the beta?
No. The official Daggerheart FAQ says the Open Beta Playtest is closed. The Darrington Press Daggerheart landing page still contains “Join the Daggerheart Open Beta Playtest right now” wording, but that conflicts with the FAQ’s direct status answer. Treat the beta as closed rather than relying on the older invitation language.

How to play Daggerheart now
If you want to play the released game, the official FAQ names Demiplane and Roll20 as Daggerheart virtual partners. These are options for groups looking to play online; check each service for its current offerings.
For a physical copy, the official purchase page lists Critical Role shops, Darrington Press Guild stores, and other local game stores as purchase routes. It says direct physical purchases through Critical Role shops and Darrington Press Guild stores include a PDF. Critical Role’s launch post also announced a dedicated Daggerheart dice set. Those products are for playing the released game; buying them was not necessary to take part in the historical free beta.

What the beta license allowed
The beta materials were shared under the Darrington Press Community Gaming License. The current license page distinguishes categories of public game content and says creators cannot monetize products based on playtest content. That restriction is specifically about monetizing products based on the playtest materials; it should not be read as a blanket ban on every kind of Daggerheart fan work.
