Dual Displays on a PlayStation 2: How the 2013 Oscilloscope Demo Worked

Abyss’s 2013 PS2 demo paired a normal TV picture with an oscilloscope visualization from one composite-video output. Here’s what the trick did—and what it didn’t.

“Dual Displays On A Playstation 2” was a demoscene experiment, not a hidden PS2 dual-monitor feature. At Revision 2013, Abyss used one PS2 composite-video output to show the ordinary image on a TV while specially timed signal content created a second visualization on an oscilloscope. It did not send two independent game screens to two televisions.

What the Revision 2013 demonstration showed

The production, identified on Pouët as “Cruisin 3” by Abyss, was demonstrated at Revision 2013. Hackaday reported that it won the event’s Wild Demo competition and described the setup as a PlayStation 2 connected to a TV and an oscilloscope. The TV displayed the familiar demo image; the oscilloscope visualized a second signal from the same PS2 video output. Hackaday’s report includes video of the demonstration.

That distinction matters: “dual displays” describes two simultaneous visual presentations on different kinds of equipment, not two independently rendered game screens. The oscilloscope was central to the effect, not simply a second television.

How one composite output carried both visual effects

Composite video combines picture information and timing in one waveform. A television uses that timing to identify and draw the visible picture. The demo took advantage of the vertical blanking interval—the part of the signal associated with the transition between picture frames—to place deliberately timed content that the oscilloscope could visualize.

Sony PlayStation 2 Console - Black (Renewed)
  • The Playstation 2 system lets you play original PS1 games as well as the huge selection of PS2 games
  • Includes: Playstation 2 System, 1 Dual Shock 2 Controller, AC Cable, AV Cable
  • Color: Black
  • PlayStation2 is equipped with a 128-bit Emotion Engine processor that enables lightning-fast gameplay and impressive graphics power

The result was a conventional composite picture for the TV alongside additional waveform behavior for the oscilloscope. An oscilloscope plots voltage over time, so with a suitably controlled and synchronized signal it can trace shapes that are not ordinary television frames. The TV and oscilloscope therefore interpreted different aspects of one output; the PS2 was not transmitting two separate standards-compliant composite video streams.

The available account establishes the broad technique, not a complete implementation. It does not specify the PS2 model, oscilloscope model, timing diagram, register settings, cable schematic, or source code. Those details cannot be inferred from the demonstration description.

What the PS2 was—and was not—doing

The PS2’s normal analog video connection is its AV Multi Out. The demo did not reveal a second video connector or add a native second GPU output. It used custom software and signal timing on one composite output. For background on PS2 video connections and standards, see the Retro Gaming reference.

  • Not dual HDMI: the demonstration predates and does not depend on HDMI output from the console.
  • Not a split-screen game mode: it was a demo-specific signal technique, not a game rendering separate views for two players.
  • Not a Y-cable trick: a splitter duplicates an existing signal; it does not synthesize the oscilloscope visualization.
  • Not a multitap feature: a PS2 multitap adds controller and memory-card connections, not video outputs; see the PSX-SPX reference.

A discussion on the Pouët production page mentions distributing composite video to multiple displays. Treat that as community discussion rather than a complete engineering specification: it does not establish that two ordinary TVs received different independent images.

Can a regular PS2 owner reproduce it?

Not with ordinary consumer cables and splitters alone. Recreating the historical effect would call for custom PS2 software or a verified reimplementation, appropriate analog video handling, and an oscilloscope that can trigger on and display the resulting signal. Console region and video standard, signal levels, synchronization, and instrument settings could all matter. The available coverage does not provide a complete, verified build procedure, so this is not a plug-and-play project recipe.

Take care with any experimental signal path: do not connect unknown signal levels directly to expensive equipment. Use suitable probes, attenuation, termination, and grounding, and account for the oscilloscope’s input limits. A timing pattern an oscilloscope can display may be rejected by a TV or video converter.

How to show the same PS2 image on two modern displays

If the goal is simply to put the PS2 picture on two screens, use a scaler or analog-to-HDMI converter followed by a powered HDMI splitter. This mirrors one image; it does not recreate Abyss’s oscilloscope effect.

Connection order

  1. Connect the PS2 AV Multi Out to a compatible composite or component cable.
  2. Connect that cable to a scaler or converter that supports the console’s output mode.
  3. Connect the scaler’s digital output to the input of a powered HDMI splitter.
  4. Connect one splitter output to each display, then select the corresponding input on both screens.
  5. Start the PS2 and check that both displays show the same picture. If either display loses sync, test it alone and then try both with a fixed output mode.

Composite is the simplest and often the closest match to the signal type discussed in the demo, but it produces a softer image with more color artifacts. Component video offers better picture quality when the console, cable, and scaler support it, but it remains a single analog video path; it does not create another display channel. Some PS2 games output 480i, so the scaler’s handling of interlaced video can affect the result.

A basic converter is usually sufficient if the priority is getting an image onto an HDMI screen, though quality and 480i handling vary. A dedicated retro scaler offers more control and can better suit an enthusiast setup, at higher cost. RetroTINK’s official specifications list component, S-Video, and composite inputs for the 2X Pro and component among the supported inputs for the 5X Pro. Either can sit before a powered HDMI splitter for mirrored displays; neither produces independent PS2 images or the original oscilloscope visualization.

For a simple modern chain, the practical arrangement is:

PS2 → compatible analog cable → scaler/converter → powered HDMI splitter → two displays

Audio may need a separate path if the scaler does not accept and embed the PS2’s analog audio. A powered splitter is generally a safer choice than relying on a passive split in a digital HDMI chain, but compatibility still depends on the scaler, splitter, cables, and displays.

If the mirrored setup fails

  • No image on either screen: connect the PS2 and cable directly to a known-compatible display to isolate the console and cable from the scaler and splitter.
  • Only one screen works: check splitter power and HDMI connections; test each display separately and try a fixed output mode if the displays negotiate incompatible modes.
  • Rolling or unstable picture: check whether the scaler supports the PS2’s NTSC or PAL output mode.
  • Black screen after a video-setting change: reconnect to a display known to support the selected mode and reset the PS2’s video-output setting.
  • No sound: route the PS2’s red-and-white analog audio separately or use a scaler that explicitly accepts and embeds it.
  • Noticeable delay: compare the scaled chain with a direct analog connection; scaler processing and display processing are likely places to investigate.

What counts as a modern alternative?

A scaler and powered splitter are the straightforward option for duplicating the console’s picture. PCSX2 is a separate possibility if the aim is experimenting with a modern multi-monitor presentation rather than reproducing the hardware demo. Its display layout depends on the emulator, operating system, renderer, and application; a second screen is a software and window-management matter, not a second native PS2 video stream. It is not equivalent to the Revision 2013 demonstration.
