Crow Country is a retro-styled survival horror game about exploring an abandoned theme park, solving puzzles, and uncovering why its owner disappeared. The fit depends on whether you want deliberate investigation and backtracking—or prefer a horror game centered on faster action. Steam’s user-rating snapshot is strongly positive, but it is a changing storefront measure, not a substitute for considering the game’s structure and horror options.

What is Crow Country?

Developed and published by SFB Games, Crow Country is a survival horror game set in 1990. You play as Mara Forest, investigating the deserted Crow Country theme park after its owner, Edward Crow, vanishes and the park closes. The game released on Steam on May 9, 2024; Nintendo lists the Switch release as October 16, 2024. Steam’s listing describes its premise and core features.

What do reviews say?

Player ratings on Steam

On October 8, 2026, Steam showed 97% positive from 5,851 English-language user reviews and 96% positive from 148 recent user reviews. These are live storefront snapshots; counts and percentages can change, and they represent Steam users rather than all players or critics. Check the current Steam review summary for the latest figures.

Critic score

GameSpot’s review index lists Crow Country at 8/10. That score is a separate measure from Steam’s user ratings; it should not be treated as an explanation of the review’s reasoning. GameSpot’s Crow Country listing provides the score reference.

What kind of game is it?

Exploration and puzzles are central

The official description emphasizes solving puzzles and riddles, unlocking new areas, revisiting places, and uncovering the story. That structure suits players who enjoy piecing together a location and its mysteries at their own pace. If you want a horror game driven mainly by constant combat or a rapid sequence of set pieces, the stated focus on investigation and backtracking may be less appealing. The official listing establishes those ingredients, but does not by itself establish how satisfying each puzzle or the pacing will feel to an individual player.

Retro presentation, not a guarantee of old-game controls

Steam tags the game as “retro” and “old school.” Those labels describe its stylistic positioning; they do not prove that its controls, difficulty, or design reproduce a particular older survival horror game exactly. Steam’s page lists the tags and official game description.

  • Spell the word "MURDER" with your cards to learn how the deadly deed was committed.
  • Each letter card has a special ability when played, and Wild Crow cards are wild.

How scary is it, and can you reduce the pressure?

Monsters are part of the standard premise, but Steam describes an optional Exploration Mode in which roaming monsters do not attack. This makes it an option for players who want to focus on the park, puzzles, and story without that particular threat. It is distinct from the standard monster encounters, so it should not be assumed to provide the same pressure as the regular mode. Steam’s description of Exploration Mode explains the difference.
