The safest repair is to identify the Crystal Reports-based application that is failing, then repair or reinstall that application and its matching Crystal Reports runtime. If the program is 32-bit, it normally needs the 32-bit runtime even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

What is crtowords_en.dll?
crtowords_en.dll is commonly identified as the Crystal Reports ToWords DLL. It is associated with Crystal Reports and its English-language ToWords() functionality.
Crystal Reports applications can use formulas such as:
ToWords(1234.00, 0)
A report may use this to display an amount in words. If the report viewer cannot find the required language component, the application may fail when it loads or renders that report even though other reports continue to work.

Depending on the application, it may have been installed with Crystal Reports itself, a Crystal Reports runtime, or a third-party accounting, ERP, reporting, invoicing, or business application that embeds Crystal Reports.
There is no reliable universal path, version, file size, hash, or architecture that applies to every copy. Do not use an old file listing as proof that a particular DLL belongs on your computer.
Is it part of Windows?
No reliable evidence indicates that crtowords_en.dll is part of Windows 10 or Windows 11. It is an application component.
That distinction matters:
- Windows Update is not expected to restore it.
- SFC normally will not replace it.
- DISM normally will not restore it.
- Copying it to
System32can create conflicts and security problems. - The correct repair source is the Crystal Reports-based application or its supported runtime installer.
Why does the error appear only with one report?
A Crystal Reports application may not load every reporting component at startup. The missing module may be requested only when a report contains ToWords() or another feature that depends on it.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
This produces a common pattern:
- The accounting or ERP program starts.
- Ordinary screens and reports work.
- One report opens or begins rendering.
- Windows reports that
crtowords_en.dllis missing or could not be loaded.
This does not prove that the named DLL is the only problem. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that the DLL exists but one of its dependencies is missing, incompatible, blocked, or the wrong bitness.
First, identify the parent application
Before changing files, find the program that is requesting the DLL.
Check the error context
Write down:
- The exact application name.
- Whether the error appears during startup or only when opening a report.
- The report name, if one report is affected.
- The complete error text.
- Whether the program is an accounting, ERP, invoicing, payroll, inventory, or report-viewing application.
A program that launches a report viewer may be the parent application even if the error names Crystal Reports.
Check installed programs
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Crystal Reports, SAP Crystal Reports, or the name of the business application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the entry.
- Look for Modify, Change, Repair, or Uninstall.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Search for Crystal Reports or the affected business application.
- Select the entry and look for a maintenance option.
If Crystal Reports is not listed, the runtime may be installed as part of the business program rather than as a separate entry. In that case, use the business application’s installer or contact its vendor for the matching runtime package.
Locate the application directory
Right-click the program’s shortcut and choose Open file location. If this opens a shortcut folder, right-click the shortcut again and select Properties. The Target field shows the executable location.

A 32-bit application may be installed under:
C:Program Files (x86)
A 64-bit application is commonly under:
C:Program Files
These locations are clues, not proof. The application’s executable bitness and the Crystal Reports runtime it was built for are what matter.
Fix 1: Repair the Crystal Reports-based application
This is the best first repair when the file is missing or the installation may be damaged.
- Close the affected application.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps and then Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the business application that displays the error.
- Choose Advanced options, Modify, Change, or Repair, depending on what the installer provides.
- Choose Repair or Reinstall.
- Allow the maintenance process to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the same report again.
If the Crystal Reports runtime is listed separately, repair that entry as well. For Crystal Reports for Visual Studio installations, Windows maintenance mode may provide a Reinstall option after selecting the product and choosing Change from the installed-programs list.
A successful repair normally means the application starts and the affected report renders without the DLL message. If the same error returns, continue with the architecture check rather than copying a replacement DLL.
Fix 2: Reinstall the matching Crystal Reports runtime
Many business applications distribute a Crystal Reports runtime separately from the main program. SAP documentation identifies runtime installer packages using names such as:
CRRuntime_32bit_13_x.msi
CRRuntime_64bit_13_x.msi
The exact runtime release must match the application’s requirements. A newer runtime is not guaranteed to repair a program built against a much older Crystal Reports engine.
Use this sequence:
- Obtain the runtime installer from the application vendor or the Crystal Reports distribution intended for that application.
- Close the business application and any report viewer.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Remove or repair the existing Crystal Reports runtime if the application vendor instructs you to do so.
- Run the supplied MSI installer as an administrator.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original report.
Do not install both architectures simply because Windows is 64-bit. Install the runtime that matches the failing executable.
Match the runtime to the application
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows generally needs the 32-bit Crystal Reports runtime. The operating system’s architecture does not decide this by itself.
To investigate the executable:
- Open Task Manager.
- Start the affected program.
- Select the Details tab.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Look for an indication that the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Some Windows versions display *32 beside a 32-bit process. If Task Manager does not identify the architecture clearly, ask the application vendor or check the program’s technical documentation. Do not guess based only on the Windows edition.
A wrong-architecture runtime can leave the DLL present while Windows still reports that it cannot load the module.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software may remove or quarantine an application DLL after an update, repair, or scan.
In Windows Security:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
crtowords_en.dllor the Crystal Reports application. - Expand the event to see its location and detection details.
Do not restore the file automatically. Restore it only if you can verify that it came from the trusted installer for the Crystal Reports-based application. If the file appeared after being downloaded from an unknown DLL archive, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
After confirming the source:
- Repair or reinstall the parent application from trusted installation media.
- Ask the application vendor whether an exclusion is appropriate.
- Restore a quarantined item only according to the vendor’s guidance.
- Test the report again.
Reinstalling from the original installer is preferable to restoring an isolated file because it also restores dependencies and correct file placement.
Fix 4: Confirm that the file is present but not loading
If the file exists, do not assume the problem is solved.
Use File Explorer to search the application’s installation directory for:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
crtowords_en.dll
Also check the directory containing the failing executable. A valid location is normally a product-specific Crystal Reports or application directory. It may be under Program Files (x86) for a 32-bit program.
If the file is present but the error remains, possible causes include:
- A missing dependency.
- A 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch.
- A damaged DLL.
- An incompatible Crystal Reports runtime.
- A blocked or quarantined dependency.
- A legacy application running with an unsuitable newer runtime.
Repair or reinstall the complete runtime. Replacing only this DLL rarely addresses the underlying problem.
Do not rename another language DLL to crtowords_en.dll. Language-specific components are not interchangeable merely because their filenames look similar.
Fix 5: Handle legacy Crystal Reports applications carefully
Older Crystal Reports applications may depend on an engine and runtime from the same product generation. This includes legacy applications built around older Crystal Reports releases.
If the program worked on an older Windows installation but fails after migration:
- Identify the exact business application version.
- Ask its vendor which Crystal Reports runtime and patches it requires.
- Use the vendor’s installer rather than a newer runtime chosen at random.
- Test the application in its supported Windows configuration if the vendor specifies one.
- Avoid replacing individual DLLs from another Crystal Reports generation.
Installing a current runtime may not repair an application built against an obsolete engine. Multiple Crystal Reports runtimes can coexist, but coexistence does not guarantee compatibility.
Fix 6: Check Windows components only when Windows has broader problems
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Crystal Reports DLL.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, review the broader Windows repair result, but do not treat that as proof that crtowords_en.dll was restored.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time while the actual problem remains the Crystal Reports installation. If you want help identifying which Windows components are damaged instead of manually interpreting repeated repair output, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues; its free scan shows what it found, while repair requires the full version. Reinstalling the Crystal Reports-based application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing DLL.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose DLL installer.
Recommended Free Tools
There is no verified evidence that crtowords_en.dll is an ActiveX or COM server that requires registration. Therefore, this is not a routine solution:
regsvr32 crtowords_en.dll
If you run it and receive an error such as “The module was loaded but the entry point was not found,” that may simply mean the DLL was never designed to be registered.
Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official documentation specifically instructs you to register that exact file. Otherwise, repair the Crystal Reports application or runtime.
Fix 8: Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable first
crtowords_en.dll is not itself a Visual C++ Redistributable DLL. Installing a Visual C++ package is therefore not the first-line repair for a missing crtowords_en.dll.
A Visual C++ dependency may still be involved if the file exists but Windows reports an invalid image or a missing dependent module. In that situation:
- Read the complete error message.
- Check the application vendor’s requirements.
- Install the required Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable architecture for the application.
- Keep in mind that older Visual C++ redistributables can remain installed side by side.
A 32-bit application generally needs the 32-bit Microsoft runtime, even on 64-bit Windows. Do not remove working runtime packages without knowing which applications use them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 9: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
Graphics, printer, and display drivers do not normally provide crtowords_en.dll. Driver work is not a primary fix for this Crystal Reports error.
Consider driver troubleshooting only if the report viewer also crashes, displays corrupted graphics, or produces broader rendering problems.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To check a device driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Printers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only when a newer driver is supplied by the device or computer manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the report.
Manually hunting through many driver packages can make a reporting problem harder to diagnose. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies problems, while installing updates requires the full version. Driver replacement is not a substitute for reinstalling the Crystal Reports runtime when crtowords_en.dll is the reported component.
Should you copy the DLL manually?
Usually, no.
Manual copying is acceptable only in a controlled deployment where the application vendor supplied the file and specifically documented its destination. The correct folder may be the application directory or a Crystal Reports runtime directory, not System32.
Windows searches for DLLs according to defined rules that include the application directory and system locations. A random copy in a system directory can:
Best Value
- Create version conflicts.
- Cause the wrong application to load the file.
- Hide the real missing dependency.
- Introduce DLL preloading risk.
- Break after an application update.
Never download a replacement from a random DLL archive. The file may contain malware, belong to a different Crystal Reports generation, have the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency is missing.
Use the original application installer, the application vendor’s deployment package, or the matching Crystal Reports runtime supplied through the supported product channel.
What if reinstalling still does not work?
Collect the following before contacting the software vendor:
- Exact application name and version.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 version.
- Full error text.
- Whether the application or only one report fails.
- Whether the failing executable is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The full path of any existing
crtowords_en.dll. - File properties and digital-signature information, if present.
- Antivirus protection-history details.
- The name of any dependency reported by the application or event log.
- Whether the runtime repair or reinstall completed successfully.
Then ask the vendor for the exact Crystal Reports runtime, language components, and patches required by that application. If the error began immediately after an update or deletion, System Restore may be a fallback, but it is not the primary repair.
Frequently asked questions
Is crtowords_en.dll safe?
The legitimate component is associated with Crystal Reports, but a filename alone does not prove that a particular copy is safe. Verify its provenance, location, installer source, and security-scan results. A file downloaded from an unknown site should not be trusted merely because its name matches.
Which program installed it?
It may have been installed by Crystal Reports, a Crystal Reports runtime, or a third-party application that embeds Crystal Reports. Look at the error window, installed programs, application shortcuts, and the directory containing the failing executable.
Why does only one report fail?
That report may use the ToWords() formula. Other reports may not request the language-specific component, so the damaged installation remains unnoticed until that report runs.
Is the file always 32-bit?
No universal architecture should be assumed. Historical public listings may describe a 32-bit build, but copies associated with different Crystal Reports generations and applications must be treated separately. Match the runtime to the application executable.
Should I put it in System32?
No. A 32-bit Crystal Reports application may use a product directory or a location under Program Files (x86). Copying the file to System32 is not a supported general repair.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I register it with regsvr32?
Not as a routine fix. Registration applies to DLLs that expose the required registration entry point. Repair or reinstall the Crystal Reports application instead.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?
Not usually. The missing file is a Crystal Reports component, not a Visual C++ runtime DLL. Install a Microsoft runtime only when the application vendor or a dependency error shows that one is required.
Can SFC restore it?
Normally no. SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components, not application files belonging to Crystal Reports.
What is the safest permanent fix?
Identify the parent application, match its Crystal Reports runtime architecture, and repair or reinstall it from trusted installation media. This restores the file in the correct location alongside its required dependencies.
