The filename identifies a Windows keyboard-layout DLL. Its metadata describes it as:

Run SFC

After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Leave the Command Prompt window open until verification reaches 100 percent.

The result may say that:

• Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations.
• Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
• Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
• Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

Restart Windows after a successful repair and test the input layout or application again.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a genuine repair source that matches your Windows edition and build. Do not use an arbitrary folder copied from another PC.

Fix 2: Remove and re-add the Italian keyboard

Use this fix when the error appears during Italian input selection, language switching, or keyboard configuration.

Re-adding the layout repairs the language configuration. It does not replace a severely damaged Windows system file, so run DISM and SFC as well if the error continues.

Windows 11

1. Open Start > Settings.
2. Select Time & language.

Fix 3: Check whether Defender quarantined the file

Security software may quarantine a file after a detection or false positive. Do not immediately restore it.

1. Open Start.
2. Type Windows Security and open it.
3. Select Virus & threat protection.
4. Select Protection history.
5. Review entries involving kbdit.dll.
6. Note the detection name, file path, and action taken.
7. Run a scan before restoring anything.

A file named kbdit.dll is not automatically genuine simply because the name is correct.

Be suspicious of copies found in:

• A game installation directory.

• %temp%.
• Downloads.

Check Device Manager

1. Right-click Start.
2. Select Device Manager.
3. Expand Keyboards.
4. Expand Human Interface Devices.
5. Look for a warning icon.
6. Right-click the affected hardware.
7. Select Update driver.
8. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
9. Restart if Windows installs an update.

For a laptop, obtain hardware drivers from the computer manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not expect a keyboard-driver update to fix a corrupt kbdit.dll.

Before escalating, also consider what happened before the error appeared:

• A failed or incomplete Windows update.
• A cleanup utility removing protected files.
• A malware incident.
• Repeated disk corruption.
• A sudden shutdown or storage failure.

If corruption returns after repair, check the drive and back up important files. The DLL itself does not prove that the storage device is failing.

Use System Restore

System Restore is useful when the error began after a specific update, driver, or system change.

1. Open Start.
2. Search for Create a restore point.
3. Open it.
4. Select System Restore.
5. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
6. Review the affected programs and drivers.
7. Confirm the restore.

System Restore normally rolls back system files and settings without removing personal files. It is not a substitute for malware cleanup or a backup.

Reinstall Windows through Windows Update on Windows 11

On supported Windows 11 installations, the repair reinstall option may be available:

1. Open Settings.
2. Select System.
3. Select Recovery.
4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
5. Select Reinstall now.
6. Follow the prompts.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Availability depends on the Windows installation and update state.

Perform an in-place repair installation

If the Windows Update repair option is unavailable or ineffective, use official Windows installation media.

1. Obtain installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and language.
2. Start Windows normally.
3. Open the installation media from within Windows.
4. Run setup.exe.
5. Follow the installation prompts.
6. Choose Keep personal files and apps when offered.
7. Complete the repair installation.

Do not boot from the media unless you intend to perform a clean installation. A clean install can remove applications and personal data, so back up important files first and use it only when less destructive recovery options have failed.

Architecture and path questions

The difference between 32-bit and 64-bit Windows matters, but it is not a reason to manually copy files.

• Native 64-bit Windows system files are normally in %windir%System32.
• 32-bit system files on 64-bit Windows are generally in %windir%SysWOW64.
• A 32-bit DLL from another Windows build is not a safe substitute for a 64-bit system component.
• A file from another Windows version may be incompatible even if the filename matches.

Use DISM and SFC so Windows selects the correct component for the installed system. If an application reports “specified module could not be found,” the missing item may also be a dependency rather than kbdit.dll itself.

Why manual DLL replacement is unsafe

Manual replacement can:
