Cruise ship job requirements depend on the position. Royal Caribbean Group lists age 18 (21 for beverage-serving roles), fluent English and a valid passport as baseline requirements, but qualifications, documents, contract terms and pay vary by vacancy. Its guidance is specific to that employer; it is not a universal cruise-line policy or salary chart.
What qualifications do you need for a cruise ship job?
For shipboard roles, Royal Caribbean Group’s stated baseline is age 18, or 21 for beverage-serving positions, fluent English and a valid passport. Beyond that, the vacancy determines what experience, training or credentials are needed.

The company says prior cruise or maritime experience is not necessary for many jobs. Hospitality or customer-service experience may be relevant, while technical and marine roles typically require maritime certification and experience. Its ship careers page also lists non-guest-facing areas such as HR, IT, finance, medical, security, crew development and inventory. Read the qualifications for the specific opening rather than assuming shipboard work is one interchangeable job category.
What documents, checks and visas may be required?
Royal Caribbean Group says candidates may need a passport, a company pre-employment medical examination, a criminal background check, qualifications relevant to the role, a seaman’s book, and vaccines or testing required by the employer. A C1-D visa may be needed where applicable, as may itinerary-related visas such as a Schengen visa. The exact list can vary with nationality, route, role and policy changes; get current instructions for the vacancy from the company or an approved hiring partner. See its onboard documentation FAQ.

The company says the process from interview through embarkation can take up to three months, depending on the job. That is an employer estimate, not a guaranteed timeline.
How to check a recruiter and avoid prohibited fees
Applicants can apply directly or through a hiring partner listed by Royal Caribbean Group. The company says only the partners on its official hiring-partner page are approved to recruit for it; those partners help source and pre-screen candidates but do not make the final hiring decision.

Royal Caribbean Group says its partners may not charge applicants administrative, agency or processing fees. This does not mean every personal joining expense is necessarily covered: after approval, candidates may have costs for items such as passports, medicals, required certificates or travel to a registered gateway. Treat this as Royal Caribbean Group’s policy and check the official recruitment terms of any other cruise line.

Royal Caribbean Group describes shipboard contracts as approximately three to eight months depending on position; another careers FAQ summarizes most roles as four to eight months. It says senior management roles are commonly around four months, while many other jobs last six to eight months. These are broad employer ranges, not a promise for an individual vacancy. The written offer and employment agreement are the terms to rely on. The company’s careers FAQ is the source for its general guidance.

What should you check in the employment agreement?
The International Labour Organization’s Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) provides a standards framework for seafarer employment agreements, wages, work and rest, leave, repatriation, accommodation, medical care and other matters. How the requirements apply depends on flag-state implementation, national rules, any collective agreement and the individual contract. The MLC is not a single global contract that settles every worker’s terms.
The ILO says an agreement should set out or refer to clear, legally enforceable terms, including the capacity in which the seafarer is employed and the amount of wages. Before accepting, check the actual agreement for:

- Job title, duties and contract duration.
- How wages are calculated, when they are paid, and any stated tips, incentives, allowances or deductions.
- Work and rest arrangements, leave and any applicable collective agreement.
- Repatriation, termination provisions and who is responsible for relevant travel.
The ILO’s MLC overview describes the convention as addressing conditions for the world’s 1.5 million seafarers. That is the ILO’s published scope estimate, not a count of cruise ship employees. The agreement provisions appear in the MLC text in NORMLEX; the ILO also explains minimum agreement information in its employment relationship and labour contracts Q&A.

How much do cruise ship jobs pay?
Royal Caribbean Group says shipboard employees are paid in U.S. dollars twice monthly to a prepaid Mastercard. Some roles may offer performance incentives, but the employer page does not publish comprehensive job-by-job salary ranges. Confirm the wage, payment schedule, incentive terms and any deductions in the individual offer and agreement rather than relying on an unsupported online average.

The ILO announced a minimum monthly basic wage benchmark for the able-seafarer category of US$690 from 1 January 2026, US$704 from 1 January 2027 and US$715 from 1 January 2028. These are category-specific ILO figures, not a cruise-line pay table or a forecast for hotel, entertainment, technical or officer positions. See the ILO’s 16 April 2025 wage announcement. Royal Caribbean Group says it provides shipboard staff with accommodation and meals. Cabins may be shared depending on the position, and the company describes cabins and bathrooms as relatively small compared with land-based accommodation. Crew amenities include social areas and a gym. Medical personnel are available onboard; the company advises crew to join healthy and to have cleared prescriptions filled for the assignment. Details are on its Life at Sea page.
Ships serve guests seven days a week, so crew may not receive a continuous 24-hour period off. Rest, activities and port visits are possible when an employee is off duty, but actual free time depends on the schedule and responsibilities. Each crew member also receives emergency training and an assigned duty practiced in drills. Being in port does not by itself mean a crew member is free to leave the ship.
What should you pack?
Because cabin space is limited, Royal Caribbean Group recommends bringing only what is needed, including appropriate clothing and toiletries. It says hazardous items such as clothing irons, hot plates, candles and weapons are prohibited. Ask recruitment about tools required for a particular role instead of assuming every crew member needs the same equipment.
