How do you get to Crumbling Farum Azula?
Progress through the Mountaintops of the Giants and the Forge sequence. After the sequence involving Melina, the game transports you to Crumbling Farum Azula. The area is part of the main story route toward Maliketh and the changed Leyndell that follows.

How do you get through Crumbling Farum Azula?
The route is a succession of exposed ledges, broken masonry, temple interiors, and enemy-occupied ruins. Falling is a persistent hazard, and not every enemy or side branch needs to be cleared to advance. The checkpoints and landmarks below provide a practical sense of direction rather than a claim that there is only one way through each space.
- Descend from the arrival point. Follow the ledges and drops toward the balcony and the first route through the ruins. Watch your footing around broken edges.
- Work through the temple ruins. Continue through Beastmen-occupied spaces toward the Crumbling Beast Grave and Dragon Temple areas. Use Sites of Grace as checkpoints when you find them.
- Cross the broken structures. Jumps across damaged masonry connect sections of the route. A dragon encounter can be fought or bypassed; it is not necessary to treat every enemy as a required fight.
- Defeat the Godskin Duo. This encounter is on the critical route. Afterward, continue across the ruined structures and through the enemy groups toward the upper ruins.
- Reach the final story encounter. The route leads to Beast Clergyman. At half health, he transforms into Maliketh. Defeating Maliketh sends you back to Leyndell, which has changed.

Which bosses are on the main route, and which are optional?

Where is Dragonlord Placidusax?
Placidusax is reached by a hidden detour near the Beside the Great Bridge Site of Grace, rather than by continuing along the ordinary route to Maliketh. The encounter is optional. If you are exploring for it, look for the separate descent and approach in that vicinity; the main route walkthrough is focused on Maliketh and does not make this detour part of story progression. The area checklist records a Dragonlord Placidusax Site of Grace and the Remembrance of the Dragonlord among the encounter-related entries.
What is worth exploring on the way?
The area checklist is useful for planning a detour, but its entries are not all guaranteed rewards on the critical path. Among the named discoveries are Alexander the Iron Fist, Old Lord’s Talisman, Boltdrake Talisman +2, Dragoncrest Shield Talisman +2, a Golden Seed, smithing stones, upgrade bell bearings, and the Ancient Dragon Prayerbook. Use Sites of Grace as checkpoints and choose side routes based on whether you want extra items, an NPC encounter, or the optional boss.

What does Farum Azula reveal about Elden Ring’s past?
The Remembrance of the Dragonlord describes Placidusax as “The Dragonlord whose seat lies at the heart of the storm beyond time” and says he “is said to have been Elden Lord in the age before the Erdtree.” It adds: “Once his god was fled, the lord continued to await its return.” These are the words of the in-game item description, reproduced by Eldenpedia’s Dragonlord Placidusax entry.

The phrase “is said to have been” matters: the text presents his place in the pre-Erdtree past as a report, not an uncontested chronology. It links his hidden arena to a storm beyond time and suggests that his god departed while he waited for its return. The item description is the clearest compact evidence for those points; it does not, by itself, settle every question about the god or the history of the age.
