When Crusader Kings III crashes on PC, start by noting exactly when it fails: before the main menu, while loading a save, just after starting a campaign, or later during play. Those situations are reported separately and do not necessarily have the same cause. Test with mods disabled, close overlay apps, and compare your PC with Steam’s listed requirements before reinstalling the game or upgrading hardware.
First, identify when CK3 crashes
Record the point of failure and whether it happens consistently. A crash during startup is a different diagnostic case from a save-loading failure or a campaign that runs for years before crashing. Reports of loading-screen crashes and later-campaign crashes describe individual cases, not a confirmed common cause.

Compare your actual operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware, and available storage with the Windows requirements on Steam’s Crusader Kings III page. The requirements are comparison points, not proof that a particular component caused a crash. Recheck the listing for current details.

If your PC falls below a listed requirement, that is relevant context to include when asking for help, but it still does not establish the specific cause. Avoid buying components until you have compared your system and gathered evidence about the failure.
Run a clean test without mods or overlay apps
Paradox’s Common Issues index lists overlay-related crashes or startup failures and mod-loading problems as troubleshooting categories. That makes them useful variables to isolate, not confirmed explanations for every crash.

- Disable all CK3 mods and test the same point of failure. If you are testing a save from a modded campaign, note that history; a no-mod test is useful diagnostically but does not guarantee that a save created with mods will load correctly without them.
- Close overlay apps that are running, then repeat the test. Change one variable at a time where practical so you can tell whether the result changes.
- Try a fresh campaign and compare its behavior with the affected save. Record whether the crash occurs in both or only in one context.

Collect useful information before requesting support

A Paradox forum support response in an August 2025 thread about later-campaign crashes requested system information, pdx_settings.txt, and files from Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/logs/. Folder names or support instructions may change, so check the current official support guidance before sending files.

What not to assume
A Steam Community post from March 6, 2025 describes one loading-screen crash and community suggestions that included reinstalling, testing without mods, antivirus exceptions, and display-setting changes. That is an anecdotal report, not a universal fix. Do not begin with destructive cleanup or broad antivirus changes unless official guidance or a specific diagnosis supports them.
Likewise, a campaign that crashes after years of play does not, by itself, prove that the save is corrupted, that a mod is responsible, or that the PC needs an upgrade. The forum report from August 2025 supports isolating mod history and gathering system and game diagnostics; it does not establish a general mid-campaign failure cause.
