Start by identifying where Crusader Kings III (CK3) fails: the launcher will not open, the game never starts, it crashes before the main menu, a save fails to load, or it crashes after play begins. The right next step depends on that stage, your storefront (Steam, PC Game Pass, or another), your operating system, any recent game or driver changes, and the exact error. There is no single confirmed fix for every CK3 crash. Work through these eight checks from least disruptive to more targeted actions, and back up valued saves before removing game-user data or reinstalling.
1. Pin down the failure stage and recent changes
Before changing files, write down what happens and when. Note whether the launcher opens, whether a CK3 process appears, and whether the failure occurs before the main menu, while loading one save, or after entering a game. Capture the exact error message, if there is one.

- Record the storefront and operating system.
- Note recent game updates, driver updates, mod or playset changes, and security-software changes.
- If only one save fails, keep that distinct from a game that cannot reach the menu at all.
This information helps match the later checks to the symptom; it does not identify a cause by itself.
2. Compare your PC with the requirements for your platform
Check the current requirements for the operating system and storefront you use. Steam lists separate requirements for Windows, macOS, and Linux, so do not apply the Windows figures to another platform. Its listing gives the following Windows specifications; requirements can change, so consult the current Steam CK3 requirements.

Being below a listed minimum is a reason to investigate compatibility, not proof that it caused a particular crash. Check the full listing for the exact platform and all supported devices.
3. Test whether mods or playsets are involved
If CK3 started failing after a game update or mod change, try a launch without mods as a diagnostic. A successful clean launch points toward the mod setup; it does not establish which mod is responsible. Record your playset or subscription state before removing anything.

After recording your mod state, follow the guide’s steps to remove the relevant records, resubscribe to a few mods, and test. This procedure targets missing mods or playsets; it is not established as a general repair for every crash.

4. Check security controls only when the symptom fits
Mods or playsets missing from the launcher
Paradox says antivirus or ransomware protection can interfere with mod files. Its official instructions name ck3.exe and the launcher executable as files to check in security permissions.

Use a narrow exception for the relevant executable or folder while testing; do not permanently disable all security protection. These checks are scoped to the symptoms above and are not universal crash fixes.
5. Use the launcher repair only for its JavaScript error
If the Paradox Launcher displays a JavaScript error when starting, follow Paradox’s documented sequence rather than applying it to an unrelated in-game crash:

- Uninstall the Paradox Launcher.
- Restart the PC.
- Start CK3 so the launcher is installed again.
- If the error remains, try the Microsoft Visual C++ x64 package, then x86, using the download route linked in Paradox’s launcher JavaScript error guide.
6. Verify game files through your storefront’s own instructions
File verification may be an available storefront option, but exact CK3-specific verification steps are not established here. Use the support instructions for the storefront where you own the game rather than guessing menu labels. A file check also does not establish that a problem in saves, mods, or launcher data has been repaired.
7. Separate a save-loading failure from a whole-game failure
If CK3 reaches the menu but fails on one save, compare that with whether a new game loads. This is a diagnostic distinction: a new game working does not prove the installation is healthy, but it suggests the failure is not identical to one that prevents the game from starting at all.

8. Escalate with details that make the failure reproducible
