It is a major expansion for the base game, not a standalone title. Which platform you play on also matters: it launched on PC in 2024, while Paradox announced console availability for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 in 2026.
What does Roads to Power add?
The expansion centers on two distinct playstyles. Paradox describes the first as Administrative Government, an alternative to feudal rule with a particular focus on the Byzantine Empire. The second lets a character travel without holding land, take contracts, and build influence. These are different routes into the expansion, not two parts of a single required campaign.

Administrative Government: empire politics
Administrative Government introduces an empire-management style outside the feudal system, with Byzantine politics as its main setting and flavor focus. Paradox presents it as a more historically appropriate representation of the Byzantine political system. It is the more direct fit if your interest is courtly competition and governing an empire rather than beginning as a roaming character. Paradox’s Roads to Power product page and its June 3, 2024 announcement describe the expansion’s features.

Landless Adventurers can move around the map without starting as landed rulers. Paradox’s launch announcement describes an adventurer beginning with a camp and a few followers, then gaining influence by offering skills to neighboring rulers. Taking contracts and building a base of power make this the expansion’s mobile, character-led option; the broader goal can be to seek a kingdom. Paradox’s September 24, 2024 launch announcement outlines this path.

Is Crusader Kings 3: Roads to Power worth it?
It is a plausible buy if at least one of those systems is a strong draw for you. Choose based on the kind of campaign you want: administrative imperial politics, or a character who travels, takes work, and builds influence without land at the start. If neither appeals, the expansion’s headline features may not justify its current local price. Current pricing is not established here, so check the relevant storefront before buying.
Steam’s listing showed 82% of 1,244 English user reviews as positive in a 2026 search-result snapshot. That is a changing storefront aggregate, not a critic score or a prediction of whether you will enjoy either playstyle. Check the Steam listing for the current information available there.
