If crw.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the problem usually belongs to IrfanView rather than Windows. The file is part of IrfanView’s Canon CRW/CR2 plug-in, which lets the 32-bit edition open Canon RAW images.
Start with this short checklist:
- Confirm that the error appears when opening IrfanView or a Canon CRW or CR2 image.
- Check whether the affected IrfanView installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Look for the complete error text. If it names another Canon DLL, repairing crw.dll alone will not be enough.
- Check whether antivirus software recently quarantined an IrfanView file.
- Do not copy crw.dll into
C:WindowsSystem32or download a standalone copy from a DLL website.
The safest repair is to reinstall the official IrfanView plug-in package that matches the IrfanView installation, with particular attention to the 32-bit CRW plug-in and its additional Canon DLL dependencies.
What crw.dll is
crw.dll is associated with the Canon CRW PlugIn for IrfanView. It is an application plug-in, not a Windows component.
The plug-in supports Canon’s CRW and CR2 RAW image formats. The official IrfanView plug-in information identifies the CRW plug-in as a 32-bit plug-in for IrfanView and notes that it requires additional Canon DLL files.

That distinction matters:
crw.dllis not supplied by Windows.- It is not a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file.
- It is not a DirectX component.
- It is not a .NET Framework file.
- It normally belongs in the IrfanView plug-in directory.
- It is not normally installed in
System32orSysWOW64. - It is not normally repaired with
regsvr32.
The official IrfanView site currently shows IrfanView and its plug-in packages at version 4.75, while the CRW plug-in listing identifies the CRW component as version 4.58. Do not use an old file listing as a reason to replace one DLL manually. Reinstall the complete matching package instead.
Fix 1: Reinstall the official IrfanView plug-ins
This is the quickest and most likely fix when crw.dll was never installed, was deleted, or became damaged.
1. Close IrfanView completely
- Close every IrfanView window.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Processes or Details.
- Look for
i_view32.exe,i_view64.exe, or another IrfanView process. - Select it and choose End task only if it is still running.
Do not replace files while IrfanView is open. Windows or the application may keep the plug-in locked.
2. Identify the IrfanView architecture
A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit IrfanView. Therefore, “my Windows is 64-bit” does not automatically mean that the 64-bit IrfanView plug-ins are correct.

To identify the application:
- Start IrfanView if it opens.
- Select Help.
- Choose About IrfanView.
- Read the program information for the installed architecture.
You can also inspect the installation folder:
i_view32.exeindicates 32-bit IrfanView.i_view64.exeindicates 64-bit IrfanView.
The official CRW listing specifically describes support for IrfanView 32-bit. If the affected installation uses i_view32.exe, install the 32-bit IrfanView plug-in package. Do not place a 32-bit plug-in into the 64-bit installation.
3. Get the matching package from IrfanView
- Open a browser.
- Manually go to the official IrfanView website.
- Open the Plug-ins page.
- Choose the plug-in package that matches the installed IrfanView architecture.
- Use the official installer or ZIP package provided there.
- If you use the installer, let it detect or select the existing IrfanView installation.
- If you use the separate CRW ZIP package, extract it according to its included
Readme.txt. - Confirm that the additional Canon DLL files mentioned by the official instructions are included where required.
Avoid search results that offer only crw.dll. The correct repair is the originating plug-in package, not a loose file.
4. Confirm the plug-in path
The plug-in should be located under the IrfanView installation, normally in a plug-in directory associated with that installation. The exact folder can vary depending on whether IrfanView was installed for all users, installed per user, or extracted from a ZIP package.
To check the program location:
- Right-click the IrfanView shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the path in Target.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Look for the plug-in folder beside the correct IrfanView executable.
Do not assume that a file copied into C:WindowsSystem32 will be found by IrfanView. Application plug-ins are normally loaded from the application’s own directories.
5. Test a CRW or CR2 file
- Start IrfanView.
- Select File.
- Choose Open.
- Select a known-good Canon
.CRWor.CR2file.
If the image opens, the plug-in is loading correctly. If the same error remains, continue with the architecture and dependency checks below.

Fix 2: Correct a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
A wrong architecture can produce more than a simple “missing DLL” message. Windows may report that the file could not be loaded, is not designed to run on Windows, or is a bad image.
The most common mismatch patterns are:
- 32-bit IrfanView with 64-bit plug-ins.
- 64-bit IrfanView with 32-bit plug-ins.
- A 32-bit
crw.dllcopied into a 64-bit program directory. - A 64-bit
crw.dllcopied into a 32-bit program directory. - Plug-ins installed into a different IrfanView folder than the executable being launched.
The official IrfanView 64-bit information warns against mixing 32-bit and 64-bit plug-ins.
Repair the mismatch
- Close IrfanView.
- Right-click the shortcut you normally use.
- Select Properties.
- Check the executable named in Target.
- Open that installation folder.
- Remove or move aside only plug-ins that clearly belong to the wrong architecture.
- Install the matching official plug-in package.
- Launch IrfanView from the same shortcut.
- Test a CRW or CR2 file again.
Do not delete an entire plug-in directory if other IrfanView formats depend on it. Reinstalling the matching package is safer than selectively replacing individual DLLs.
If you have 64-bit Windows but need the CRW plug-in described by the official listing, install and use the 32-bit edition of IrfanView with its 32-bit plug-ins. The operating system’s bitness and the application’s bitness do not have to match.
Fix 3: Restore the additional Canon DLL dependencies
The CRW plug-in requires additional Canon DLL files. This means crw.dll can be present while the plug-in still fails because a dependency is missing, incomplete, or the wrong architecture.
This often produces a misleading error. Windows may identify crw.dll even though the missing component is another file loaded by it.
Check for a different missing file
Read the complete error carefully. Look for wording that names:

.dllfile. - A bad image.
- A file that is not designed to run on Windows.
- A module that could not be loaded.
- A failure that occurs only with CRW or CR2 images.
If the message names another Canon DLL, reinstall the complete official CRW package and follow its Readme.txt. Do not download that second DLL separately.
Reinstall the complete package
- Close IrfanView.
- Open Settings with
Windows+I. - Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Search for IrfanView.
- If the installed program has an uninstall entry, select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Download the correct IrfanView installer and plug-in package from the official IrfanView website.
- Install the same architecture you intend to use.
- Install the plug-ins into that installation.
- If using the CRW ZIP, apply the included instructions for its Canon dependencies.
- Restart IrfanView and test the image.
A complete reinstall repairs the relationship between the executable, plug-in folder, crw.dll, and dependent Canon files. It also avoids retaining a partially copied DLL from an older installation.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a plug-in. This is especially relevant if IrfanView worked previously and the error appeared after a security scan, cleanup operation, or update.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an IrfanView plug-in or a file from the IrfanView installation directory.
- Confirm the detected path and detection name before taking action.
Restore a file only when you have verified that it came from the official IrfanView package and the installation has not been tampered with. If you are unsure, do not restore it. Remove the damaged installation and reinstall the complete package from the official source.
After reinstalling:
- Check that the plug-in remains in the IrfanView directory.
- Start IrfanView.
- Test a CRW or CR2 image.
- If antivirus immediately quarantines it again, leave the file quarantined and investigate the detection rather than repeatedly restoring it.
A filename alone is not proof of authenticity. A crw.dll file in an unexpected directory should be treated cautiously.
Fix 5: Repair a damaged IrfanView installation or plug-in path
Read-only folders, cleanup utilities, permissions, and multiple IrfanView installations can cause the program to load from a different location than expected.
Verify the active executable
- Right-click the IrfanView shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Note the path in Target.
- Select Open File Location.
- Confirm that the expected plug-in directory is beside that executable.
- Look for duplicate IrfanView installations elsewhere on the computer.
- Launch the executable directly from the confirmed folder.
- Test the CRW or CR2 file.
If launching the executable directly works but the shortcut fails, the shortcut points to a different installation. Create a new shortcut from the working executable.
Check folder permissions
- Right-click the IrfanView installation folder.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Security tab.
- Confirm that your Windows account has permission to read and execute files there.
- If you installed the program in a protected location, run the official installer again using an administrator account.
- Do not broadly grant full control to every user just to make one DLL load.
If a cleanup utility removes “unused” DLLs, add the official IrfanView installation to its exclusions or stop using that cleanup rule. Application plug-ins can look unused to generic cleanup software while still being required for a particular image format.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for crw.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the registration functionality expected by Windows. Microsoft documents it as a tool for registering suitable DLL files in the registry.
There is no official indication that the IrfanView CRW plug-in requires registry registration. It is an application plug-in, not a documented COM or ActiveX server.
Running this command is therefore not a normal repair:

regsvr32 crw.dll
It may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the entry point was not found. That does not prove that Windows is damaged. It usually means the DLL is not designed to be registered this way.
Use the official IrfanView installer or plug-in instructions instead.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows has wider problems
SFC and DISM do not normally restore a third-party IrfanView plug-in. They repair protected Windows components and the Windows component store.
Use them when other Windows files or features are also failing, not as the first response to an IrfanView-only error.
Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test IrfanView again.
Microsoft recommends this order for repairing corrupted Windows files. If these commands report that Windows is healthy but crw.dll is still missing, return to the IrfanView plug-in repair rather than repeating the commands.

A camera driver is not normally the source of an IrfanView plug-in DLL error. If IrfanView itself opens but importing from a connected Canon camera fails, that is a separate device or transfer problem.
For a genuine device issue:
- Press
Windows+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Portable Devices, Cameras, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the affected Canon device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the status on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab to view the provider and date.
- Use Update driver only when a verified driver is available from the device manufacturer.
- Restart the computer and test the device again.
Do not replace IrfanView plug-ins merely because a camera is not visible in File Explorer. The CRW plug-in handles image files; it does not provide every camera connection function.

Searching for crw.dll often produces pages offering an individual file. That is the wrong repair path for this problem.
A standalone download can have:
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- A version intended for a different IrfanView package.
- Missing Canon dependencies.
- Unknown modifications.
- Malware or unwanted software.
- A location that IrfanView never searches.
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, the Windows directory, or an unrelated program folder can also make troubleshooting harder. It may hide the original installation problem without making the plug-in functional.

Use the official IrfanView installer and plug-in packages instead. If antivirus quarantined the file, verify the package source and detection before restoring anything.
