rsvpperf.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file, but it is a legacy one. If Windows says rsvpperf.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair the Windows component or identify the old program requesting it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is described as Microsoft® Windows(TM) RSVP Performance Monitor. It belongs to Windows’ older RSVP and Quality of Service performance-counter infrastructure, not to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, Adobe, or a specific game.
What rsvpperf.dll does
RSVP means Resource Reservation Protocol. Microsoft documented RSVP as part of the Windows QoS architecture. In Windows 2000, RSVP signaling was supported directly; in Windows XP and later, the RSVP service remained primarily as a conduit between applications and traffic-control components. You can read Microsoft’s background documentation in RSVP SP and RSVP.
rsvpperf.dll is a performance-counter provider. Windows performance tools can load provider DLLs to collect counters for a subsystem. Microsoft describes this model in Creating a Performance Extension DLL.

Historically, public Windows XP file inventories placed it at:
C:WindowsSystem32rsvpperf.dll
That location is legacy information, not a guarantee that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should contain the file. A clean current Windows installation may not include this obsolete component. The documented legacy file is identified as a 32-bit DLL, so do not assume it belongs in both System32 and SysWOW64.
What the error actually means
Common messages include:
- “This application failed to start because rsvpperf.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because rsvpperf.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The file rsvpperf.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading rsvpperf.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “rsvpperf.dll cannot be located.”
- “rsvpperf.dll file could not be loaded.”
These messages do not all prove that the file itself has been deleted.
“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that Windows found rsvpperf.dll but could not load one of its dependencies. The request may also come from a broken Performance Counter registration, an old utility, or an application that expects a component from an older Windows release.

Fix 1: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a system file after a detection. A missing file can also be a symptom of malware, so do not restore it solely because the filename looks familiar.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent items for a detection involving
rsvpperf.dll. - Expand the detection and inspect the path, detection name, and action taken.
- If the file is clearly a genuine Windows file and the detection is demonstrably a false positive, select Actions → Restore or Allow on device, depending on the available option.
Before restoring, verify that the file was located in a normal Windows directory, carries a valid Microsoft digital signature, and was not recently placed there by an unknown installer. If the detection indicates malware, leave the file quarantined and select Scan options → Microsoft Defender Offline scan or run a full scan.
After restoring a confirmed false positive, restart Windows and repeat the action that produced the error.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
This is the safest general repair for a damaged or missing protected Windows component. DISM repairs the Windows component store, then System File Checker uses that repaired source to check protected system files.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the application or Windows feature that produced the error.
Microsoft recommends using DISM before SFC when the Windows image may be damaged. The commands and result meanings are documented in Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance.
A successful SFC result may say that Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. If SFC repaired files, restart Windows before testing again.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, run Windows Update first and repeat the commands. Microsoft also documents using a matching Windows installation as a repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\serverc$windows /LimitAccess
The source must match the installed Windows version. Do not point DISM at an arbitrary Windows folder from another release.
When you are repeatedly hunting for damaged components and cannot tell what changed between repair attempts, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows what it finds; its repair functions require the full version, and Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC remain the appropriate first-line repairs.
Fix 3: Use Windows recovery or installation repair
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
Use this path when DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, Windows cannot boot normally, or the problem began after a failed update or upgrade.
Try System Restore
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after installing an update, driver, utility, or other system change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next → Finish.
- Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs while normally leaving personal files untouched. Microsoft explains the process in System Restore.
If Windows will not start, enter the Windows Recovery Environment. You can reach it by holding Shift while selecting Start → Power → Restart, then choosing Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore.

Use Windows installation media or an in-place repair
If the component store is badly damaged, use official Windows installation media that matches the installed edition and architecture. Start the setup program from within Windows and choose the option to keep personal files and apps when that option is offered.
Read every setup screen carefully. A clean installation can remove applications and personal data, so back up important files first. If Windows cannot boot and recovery tools cannot repair it, use the installation media’s Repair your computer option before considering a clean installation.
For an XP-era computer, use the original matching Windows installation CD and the supported System File Checker or repair installation for that release. Do not use a Windows 11 DLL as a substitute for a Windows XP system file, or copy a file from an unrelated computer.
Fix 4: Identify the program requesting the DLL
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A modern Windows installation may not need rsvpperf.dll at all. An old utility, installer, compatibility layer, or third-party application may be requesting it directly.
Start with the visible error:
- Write down the application name in the title bar.
- Check whether the error appears during Windows startup or only after launching a particular program.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Sort by installation date if the issue began after a recent installation.
- Select the suspected application and choose Advanced options → Repair, if available.
- If Repair does not help, choose Reset only after checking what application data it removes.
- Reinstall the application from its official vendor source if it is known to be old or damaged.
For startup entries:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable a suspicious or recently installed entry.
- Restart Windows and test again.
You can also inspect Event Viewer:
- Open Start and search for Event Viewer.
- Go to Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an error at the time the DLL message appeared.
- Check the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and event details.
If only one obsolete application requests the file, repairing or removing that application is usually safer than forcing a legacy DLL into its folder. If the program is essential and no compatible release exists, use a supported Windows installation or a virtual machine appropriate for that old software rather than weakening the current system.
Fix 5: Check Performance Counter registration
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Because rsvpperf.dll is associated with performance counters, Windows may try to load it through Perflib or Performance Monitor even when no ordinary application uses it.
This is especially likely if the error appears while opening Performance Monitor, collecting system diagnostics, or starting a service that queries performance counters.
First repair Windows with DISM and SFC. If the file exists and the error occurs only during performance-counter activity:
- Open Event Viewer.
- Check Applications and Services Logs and Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for Perflib or performance-counter events around the failure time.
- Record the counter name, service, and registry path shown in the event.
- Search Microsoft documentation for the repair procedure specific to that Windows version.
Microsoft’s About Performance Counters explains how counter consumers load provider modules.

Do not delete arbitrary RSVP or Perflib registry entries. Do not rebuild every performance counter blindly. A registry change that removes the wrong provider can break unrelated monitoring tools and make diagnosis harder.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall a related driver
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
rsvpperf.dll is not a normal graphics, audio, chipset, or game DLL, so a driver update is not the default fix. Consider this step only when the error began after a network driver change, a hardware upgrade, or a failed Windows update, and diagnostics identify a related device or service.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters and inspect devices showing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and record the provider and version.
- Select Update Driver → Search automatically for drivers.
- If Windows finds nothing, obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
- If the problem began immediately after an update, select Roll Back Driver when available.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not use Device Manager to replace rsvpperf.dll; Device Manager manages device drivers, not arbitrary Windows system DLLs.
When identifying a stale driver manually would mean checking many devices and comparing versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver issues; the full version performs driver installation, but it is not required and cannot replace Windows component repair.

Why regsvr32 is normally the wrong fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 rsvpperf.dll
and do not use the /i switch as a routine repair.
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM and ActiveX DLLs that expose registration entry points. Performance-counter provider DLLs use a different registration and collection model. Microsoft documents provider functions such as OpenPerformanceData, CollectPerformanceData, and ClosePerformanceData, rather than ordinary COM registration.
Therefore, a regsvr32 failure does not prove that rsvpperf.dll is corrupt. It usually means the command is inappropriate for this type of file.
Why downloading rsvpperf.dll is risky
Avoid random DLL download pages and manual copying. An unknown replacement can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, be from the wrong Windows release, or lack the dependencies expected by the caller. Even a clean file may not fix a broken component store, Performance Counter registration, or application installation.
Do not copy a 32-bit legacy DLL into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, those directories serve different purposes, and copying the wrong binary can create additional loading conflicts.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, installation media, or the original application’s official installer instead. If you already downloaded a replacement, delete it, run a security scan, and repair Windows from an official source.

A file named rsvpperf.dll in a game directory, temporary folder, downloads folder, or unfamiliar user-profile location deserves additional scrutiny. A malicious file can use the same filename as a genuine Windows component.
The old inventory data associated with Windows XP identifies a 32-bit file, commonly version 5.1.2600.0 and approximately 9,728 bytes. Those details describe a legacy file record, not a universal version or size requirement for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

FAQ
Is rsvpperf.dll a real Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a legacy Microsoft Windows DLL named Microsoft Windows RSVP Performance Monitor and is associated with RSVP/QoS performance counters.
Is rsvpperf.dll part of Visual C++ 2015?
No. There is no verified relationship between this file and the Visual C++ Redistributable. Installing Visual C++ solely because this filename appears is not an appropriate repair.
Should I download rsvpperf.dll?
No. Restore the Windows component through DISM, SFC, System Restore, installation media, or a supported repair process. Use an official installer if a particular old application is the caller.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchShould I put it in System32 and SysWOW64?
No. Do not copy a legacy 32-bit DLL into both directories. The correct location depends on the Windows release, architecture, and component installation.
Does regsvr32 fix it?
Normally no. This is a performance-counter provider, not an ordinary COM or ActiveX DLL.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file is present?
A dependency may be missing, the file may have the wrong architecture, its signature may be invalid, or the calling program may be using an obsolete registration. Identify the process and repair the underlying component instead of replacing the visible filename.
Why does a game show this error?
There is no reliable evidence that a particular modern game requires rsvpperf.dll. An old launcher, utility, installer, or compatibility component may be responsible. Check the error’s title bar and Event Viewer to identify the caller.
Will Windows 11 normally contain this file?
Not necessarily. The strongest public file records concern older Windows generations. Do not assume that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 build includes this legacy DLL.
What is the safest first repair?
Check Windows Security Protection History, then run DISM followed by SFC from an elevated Command Prompt. If the error remains, identify the calling process before making further changes.
