You may also see an lsass.exe - Bad Image message involving this file. That case is more serious because Local Security Authority Subsystem Service is involved in Windows sign-in and startup.

The 60-second answer

cryptdll.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component described as Cryptography Manager. It is supplied by Microsoft Corporation as part of the Windows operating system, not as a separate Visual C++ runtime, DirectX package, .NET assembly, or game redistributable.

Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website and do not copy an unverified file into System32. First install pending Windows updates, then open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Restart Windows after both commands finish. DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses, which is why Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Official Microsoft guidance covers this repair sequence and its possible results.

If the error names lsass.exe, prevents sign-in, or leaves Windows unable to boot, use Windows Recovery Environment rather than reinstalling an ordinary application.

What is cryptdll.dll?

cryptdll.dll is associated with the Microsoft Windows operating system. Its reported description is Cryptography Manager, and its publisher should be Microsoft Corporation when the file is genuine.

Windows releases and builds do not all use an identical file version, architecture, or size. Public file inventories show copies in locations including:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

Those locations are normal, but the filename alone does not prove that a particular file is authentic. A copied or renamed malicious file can use the same name. Verify the path and Microsoft digital signature before treating a copy as legitimate.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 generally contains the 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 provides 32-bit system files to 32-bit programs through Windows file-system redirection. The names are confusing: SysWOW64 does not mean that it contains 64-bit files. Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.

Do not assume that every computer has identical copies in both directories. The exact files depend on the Windows release, installed architecture, servicing state, and build.

What the different messages mean

“Missing” or “not found”

Windows or an application cannot locate a usable copy at the path it expects. The file may have been deleted, quarantined, damaged, or replaced. The message can also result from a missing dependency used by the DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The specified module could not be found”

This wording is often misunderstood. It does not always mean that cryptdll.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load another DLL or component required by it.

“Bad Image” or “not designed to run on Windows”

This usually indicates that the file is corrupted, incomplete, incompatible with the process, or not a valid Windows binary. It can also point to a damaged dependency or an architecture mismatch.

lsass.exe - Bad Image

Treat this as a Windows repair problem, not an application problem. LSASS is involved in authentication, so the error can interfere with normal logon, produce a black screen, or leave the system unable to start normally.

Likely causes

What happened More likely explanation Correct response
The error names a Windows system path A protected Windows file or component store is damaged Windows Update, DISM, then SFC
The problem began after an interrupted update or shutdown Windows servicing may be incomplete Restart, update Windows, repair the component store
Defender or antivirus history mentions the file The file may have been quarantined or replaced Review the detection and repair Windows
Only one game or application fails The application installation or one of its dependencies may be damaged Repair, verify, or reinstall that program
The file exists but has the wrong signature or path It may have been replaced or tampered with Scan for malware and repair Windows
SFC repeatedly finds corruption Storage failure, malware, or deeper servicing damage is possible Check disk health and consider recovery or in-place repair

Fix 1: Install Windows updates first

Pending updates can contain corrected system files and servicing fixes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Save your work and close open applications.
  2. Open Start.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Choose Windows Update. On some Windows 10 installations, open Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  5. Select Check for updates.
  6. Install available updates.
  7. Restart when Windows requests it.
  8. Test the application or sign in again.

If Windows reports that an update failed, restart once more and check for updates again. Do not repeatedly interrupt an update or shut down the computer while servicing is in progress.

If the machine cannot reach the desktop, move to the Windows Recovery Environment steps below.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the primary repair for a missing, corrupted, or invalid cryptdll.dll under a Windows system directory.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause.
  3. When DISM finishes, leave the elevated window open.

DISM may use Windows Update as a repair source. If it reports that source files could not be found, use the installation-media procedure later in this guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run SFC

In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

Possible results include:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: restart, run DISM again if necessary, and review the SFC log or continue to installation-media repair.
  • Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart Windows and retry from an elevated Command Prompt.

Restart after SFC, even when it reports successful repairs.

If you prefer a guided utility for the time-consuming process of identifying damaged components and repeating manual repair checks, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention; its repair features require the full version. It is optional, and DISM plus SFC remain the official Windows repair path.

Check only cryptdll.dll

When Windows is running and the file is expected at the standard 64-bit system path, you can perform a targeted check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSystem32cryptdll.dll

Use the full path named by the error when it differs. Do not change the path merely to make the command run. If the application is 32-bit or the message names SysWOW64, investigate the architecture and exact path before attempting a targeted check.

Fix 3: Use an installation source when DISM cannot find files

If DISM reports that repair files could not be found, Windows may need a matching installation source.

  1. Use Microsoft’s official Windows installation-media page to obtain the appropriate Windows media.
  2. Create or mount the installation media according to Microsoft’s instructions.
  3. Identify its drive letter in File Explorer, such as D:.
  4. Confirm that the source matches the installed Windows release and architecture.
  5. Run DISM with a suitable source path supplied by that media.

The exact source filename and index depend on the media. Do not guess a source path or use media for a different Windows release. If you are not sure which image index applies, stop before running a command with an arbitrary index and use the media’s documented repair procedure.

Installation media is especially useful when Windows Update is unavailable, the component store is damaged, or DISM repeatedly reports missing source files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender and other antivirus quarantine

Security software may remove a file after detecting tampering or suspicious behavior. A quarantine entry does not automatically prove that the detection was wrong.

Review Defender Protection history

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review entries mentioning cryptdll.dll, the application that reported the error, or a recent quarantine action.
  6. Open an entry to see its path and action.
  7. Restore a file only when you have verified that it is a genuine Microsoft-signed file in the expected Windows directory and the detection is a false positive.

Restoring a detected threat can cause it to be detected again. If the file is unsigned, stored in an unusual folder, or repeatedly replaced after repair, do not restore it. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan. For a persistent or serious infection, use Microsoft Defender Offline or another trusted security product.

After security cleanup, run DISM and SFC. Malware can damage more than one protected file, so restoring one DLL is not a complete repair.

Fix 5: Repair or reinstall the affected application

If Windows starts normally and only one program reports cryptdll.dll, the program itself may have a damaged installation or a missing dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a normal desktop application

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Apps.
  4. Open Installed apps. Windows 10 may label this Apps & features.
  5. Find the affected application.
  6. Open its menu and select Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Test the application.
  9. If it still fails, return to the same area and select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
  10. If no repair option exists, uninstall the application.
  11. Restart Windows.
  12. Download the installer from the application vendor’s official source and reinstall it.

For a game, use the launcher’s Verify files, Repair, or equivalent command before reinstalling. This replaces damaged game files without assuming that the Windows system DLL itself is the problem.

If reinstalling the program fixes the error, the original installation was likely damaged. If several applications and Windows components fail, stop reinstalling individual programs and return to DISM and SFC.

Do not automatically reinstall runtimes

Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET do not directly repair the Windows cryptdll.dll file. Repair those runtimes only when the application separately identifies a missing runtime component or its official installer requires them.

Do not install a runtime package simply because a DLL error appeared. First determine whether the message names a Windows path or an application folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit paths

Architecture mistakes are a common result of manual DLL copying.

  • Premium Hardware & Reliable Support – built with high-quality flash chips for speed and longevity. TECH STORE ON provides responsive customer support within 24 hours.

On 64-bit Windows:

  • System32 is normally associated with 64-bit system files.
  • SysWOW64 provides 32-bit system files for 32-bit processes.
  • A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application may not load the same copy.

Check the full path in the error message. Also check the affected program’s architecture from its documentation or vendor support information.

Do not copy a file from SysWOW64 into System32, or the reverse. A file can have the correct name but still be the wrong architecture, build, signature, or dependency set. Let Windows servicing restore the correct copy.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when the timing points to a driver problem

A graphics, storage, chipset, or security driver does not normally get repaired by replacing cryptdll.dll. However, if the error began immediately after a driver installation or system hardware change, update or roll back the relevant driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the suspected device, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or Network adapters.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Note the provider, date, and version.
  8. Select Update Driver and allow Windows to search, or install a driver obtained from the device manufacturer.
  9. If the issue began after a recent update and Roll Back Driver is available, use that option instead.
  10. Restart Windows and test again.

If you are manually checking many devices and cannot tell which driver changed, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its driver installation features require the full version. It is optional, and a driver update is not a substitute for repairing a corrupted Windows component.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change

System Restore can help when the error began after a driver, cleanup utility, update, or software installation.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Create a restore point.
  3. Open the matching result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  6. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  7. Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs without normally affecting personal files. It does not replace a backup and may not be available if restore points were disabled.

If the error continues after an appropriate restore point, return to DISM and SFC rather than repeatedly restoring unrelated points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows will not boot

Use Windows Recovery Environment when the error names lsass.exe, prevents sign-in, or leaves the computer unable to start normally.

Enter Windows Recovery Environment

If Windows reaches the sign-in screen:

  1. Hold Shift.
  2. Select Power, then Restart.
  3. Keep holding Shift until the recovery menu appears.

If Windows cannot reach that screen, interrupt startup only as a last resort by turning the computer off during boot and repeating the process until Windows displays automatic recovery.

Then choose:

Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Command Prompt

The Windows drive letter may not be C: in Recovery Environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find the Windows drive letter

At Command Prompt, try:

dir C:Windows
dir D:Windows
dir E:Windows

Use the drive that displays the Windows directory. Assume it is C: only after confirming it.

Run offline SFC

For a Windows installation on C:, run:

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C: /offwindir=C:Windows

Replace both path letters if Windows is on another drive. Wait for the scan to finish, then type:

exit

Choose Continue to restart Windows.

If the offline scan cannot repair the file, use matching installation media and Microsoft’s documented offline servicing procedure. Do not delete cryptdll.dll or copy an arbitrary replacement into the offline Windows directory.

Do not use regsvr32 for this repair

regsvr32 is a registration utility for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a generic command for restoring, repairing, or loading every DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

cryptdll.dll is a Windows system component, so registering it is not the first-line solution. Running a command such as:

regsvr32 cryptdll.dll

will not repair a missing file, replace a corrupted Windows component, fix a dependency, or correct a wrong-architecture copy. It may only produce another error and distract from the actual repair.

Why manual DLL downloads are unsafe

Avoid DLL download repositories and search-result installers that offer a replacement cryptdll.dll. An arbitrary copy may have:

  • The wrong Windows build
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • An invalid or missing Microsoft signature
  • A damaged dependency relationship
  • Malware or unwanted software
  • A version that conflicts with Windows servicing

Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can make the installation less reliable. The safe sources are Windows Update, the Windows component store, Microsoft installation media, protected-file repair through DISM and SFC, and the affected application’s official installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to verify the file

If Windows is running, inspect the file named in the error.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to the exact path, such as C:WindowsSystem32.
  3. Right-click cryptdll.dll.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  6. Confirm that the signer is Microsoft Corporation and that Windows reports the signature as valid.

A missing Digital Signatures tab, an invalid signature, an unexpected folder, or a filename outside the Windows system directories deserves further investigation. Verify the path before drawing conclusions because a malicious program can place a file with the correct name elsewhere.

What to collect if the problem persists

Before asking for technical help or performing a recovery installation, record:

  • The complete error text
  • The full path shown in the message
  • Whether Windows can reach the desktop
  • Whether lsass.exe is named
  • The affected application or game
  • Your Windows edition and build
  • Whether the issue began after an update, shutdown, cleanup, driver change, or antivirus action
  • Defender Protection history entries
  • Relevant Event Viewer errors
  • The final DISM result
  • The final SFC result
  • Whether the file has a valid Microsoft digital signature

Open Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and checking Windows Logs → System and Windows Logs → Application around the time of the failure. Look for the failing process, service, module, or dependency rather than searching only for the filename.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired corruption, check storage health and back up important files. A failing disk, malware, or an incompatible third-party replacement may prevent DISM and SFC from producing a lasting repair. Consider an in-place Windows repair or a recovery procedure when standard servicing cannot restore system integrity.

FAQ

Is cryptdll.dll a legitimate Windows file?

Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows system component described as Cryptography Manager. Confirm the Microsoft digital signature and expected Windows system path because a filename alone does not prove authenticity.

Should I download cryptdll.dll?

No. Do not use an arbitrary DLL download. Repair Windows through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or matching Microsoft installation media.

Is cryptdll.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

No. It belongs to Windows itself. Reinstall those runtimes only when the affected application separately reports a runtime problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the error mention both System32 and SysWOW64?

Windows supports different application architectures. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit processes use redirected 32-bit system files through SysWOW64, while System32 normally contains 64-bit system files.

Does regsvr32 fix cryptdll.dll?

No. regsvr32 registers DLLs that support registration entry points. It does not restore or repair this Windows system file.

What if only one game reports the error?

Repair or verify the game through its official launcher. If that fails, reinstall it from the official source. Do not replace the Windows DLL in the game folder unless the vendor’s official installer specifically supplies it.

What if lsass.exe reports Bad Image?

Use Windows Recovery Environment and run offline SFC. If Windows cannot boot, do not focus on reinstalling ordinary applications. Repair the Windows installation first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will DISM and SFC always solve the problem?

They are the correct first repair for Windows component corruption, but they cannot guarantee recovery from malware, failing storage, an incompatible replacement, or every dependency problem. Persistent failures require signature checks, security scans, Event Viewer investigation, storage checks, System Restore, or Windows recovery.
