imged32.dll is a 32-bit application DLL associated with Borland C++Builder, not a normal Windows component. If imged32.dll is missing, identify the older program requesting it before copying or downloading anything.
Record these details first:
- Which program shows the error
- Whether it appears when launching the program, opening a project, or using a particular feature
- Whether the problem began after an uninstall, reinstall, update, cleanup, backup restore, or antivirus alert
- The complete error message
- The executable named in the message or shortcut
- The program’s installation folder
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the application itself is an older 16-bit or 32-bit program
Typical wording includes “This application failed to start because imged32.dll was not found,” “The program can’t start because imged32.dll is missing from your computer,” or a message saying that the file is corrupted or not designed to run on Windows. The wording varies by Windows version and by the program that loads the DLL.

The filename alone cannot identify the exact application. Public file metadata describes it as Borland Image Editor DLL, with Borland C++Builder listed as the product and Borland International as the company. Available metadata identifies it as a Win32 DLL. Reported version and size details should be treated as observed information from particular preserved files, not as a universal match for every C++Builder installation.

Because imged32.dll belongs with a legacy Borland application, repairing that application is more reliable than treating the DLL as an independent Windows file.

1. Identify the calling program
If the error dialog names the program, write it down. If it does not, use one of these methods:
- Right-click the shortcut that you normally use.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Target field on the Shortcut tab.
- Note the executable name and folder.
- Select Open File Location if that button is available.
You can also open File Explorer and search the program’s known installation folder for .exe files. Do not search the web for a replacement DLL at this stage.
If the program is started by another launcher, identify the launcher and the application it owns. A launcher may have its own repair or file-verification function.

2. Check the application folder and Recycle Bin
Open the folder containing the program executable. Look for imged32.dll beside the executable or within the application’s own subfolders.
If the file is present:
- Do not move it into
C:WindowsSystem32. - Do not move it into
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Check whether the error names another missing DLL.
- Check the file’s Properties for a security-blocking message or an unusual location.
- Do not rename or replace it yet.
A file can be present but unavailable because the program is searching the wrong directory, the installation contains mixed files from different releases, or another dependency is missing.
If the file was deleted recently, open the Recycle Bin, select the file if it is clearly from the trusted application installation, right-click it, and choose Restore. If you cannot establish that it came from the original program, use the installer instead of restoring an uncertain file.
3. Use Windows’ application repair option
Some desktop applications expose repair controls through Windows:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
The exact controls depend on how the application was packaged. If Repair is unavailable, do not substitute a random DLL download.
For older Borland or C++Builder software, use the original installer or installation media:
- Close the affected application.
- Back up its projects and personal data.
- Locate the original trusted installer.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator if the program requires administrative installation rights.
- Choose Repair if the installer offers it.
- If repair is not offered, reinstall the application into its intended folder.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application from its normal shortcut.
A repair or reinstall should restore the complete application files that belong together. Avoid copying a DLL from another C++Builder release into the repaired installation.

For older C++Builder materials, use legitimate installation media or the official Borland/Embarcadero account and support route associated with the product. Current C++Builder downloads are for modern versions and may not provide the exact legacy application you are trying to restore.

Security software may quarantine or delete a DLL after an update or scan. This can be a false positive, but it can also indicate that a file or installer was modified.
To inspect Microsoft Defender history:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review events from the time the application stopped working.
- Expand an event involving the affected application or
imged32.dll. - Confirm the file path and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- The application came from a trusted original source.
- The file path belongs to that application.
- You understand the security event.
- You have scanned the installer and system.
If the source is uncertain, do not restore the quarantined file. Remove the damaged application, obtain clean installation media from the legitimate software owner or your verified backup, and reinstall it. Update the security product before scanning the replacement installation.
If the application has a verify-files option
Some applications, especially those installed through a launcher, can compare their files with the original package.
Open the launcher, select the affected application, and look for a menu named Verify, Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair. Run that operation, allow it to replace damaged files, and then restart the launcher.

Do not register imged32.dll with regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs and controls that support self-registration, commonly through a DllRegisterServer entry point. It is not a universal missing-DLL repair command.
Do not run:
regsvr32 imged32.dll
unless the application vendor specifically instructs you to do so. A normal application-support DLL may respond with an error such as “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.” Registering it will not recreate a deleted file, repair a wrong version, or install a missing dependency.
The correct action is to restore the complete application installation.
Do not download a standalone DLL from a random site
A standalone download can contain:
- Malware or an altered file
- The wrong release of Borland software
- The wrong architecture
- A file with incompatible dependencies
- A DLL that creates a search-order security problem
- A replacement that hides the real application damage
Even when a downloaded file has the same name, it may not match the executable that loads it. Copying it into a Windows folder can also cause unrelated programs to load the wrong file.

Manual copying is reasonable only when the source is one of the following:
- The exact original installer
- A verified backup of the same application
- Another trusted installation of the same application release
Place the file only in the application’s intended directory, and restore the complete application when possible. Do not use C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 as general-purpose DLL storage.
Check whether another dependency is actually missing
Sometimes Windows reports the first file it cannot load. The problem may therefore be a missing dependency of imged32.dll, rather than imged32.dll itself.

A dependency-analysis utility can show which libraries the executable expects, but use one from a trusted source and interpret old-program results carefully. Legacy applications may reference components that are no longer present on current Windows versions.
Do not install Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages as a substitute for imged32.dll. This file is associated with Borland C++Builder, not Microsoft Visual C++.
Install a Microsoft Visual C++ package only when the complete error identifies a missing Microsoft runtime or the application’s official documentation requires one. If a 32-bit application needs the Microsoft runtime, it generally needs the x86 package even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Microsoft’s current supported packages are documented on its Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
Account for 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Available metadata identifies imged32.dll as a Win32 DLL. That means it is intended for a 32-bit Windows application.
A 32-bit application can often run on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ compatibility support, but that does not make every old application compatible. Problems may involve:
- A 16-bit installer that current 64-bit Windows cannot run
- Old licensing or copy-protection components
- Hard-coded installation paths
- Permissions when writing to protected folders
- Outdated graphics or printer integrations
- Dependencies removed from current Windows
- A program searching an obsolete directory
To determine the Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
Do not infer the application’s architecture from the Windows architecture. A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications, but the application’s own installer and dependencies must still be compatible.

If the program was designed for an older Windows release, right-click its executable or shortcut, select Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and test an appropriate compatibility setting. Apply changes only to the affected program, then launch it again.
If the installer fails, try running the installer as administrator. If the application still cannot run, use a supported older environment or virtual machine rather than replacing individual DLLs.
Use System Restore if the failure is recent
System Restore can help when the application worked previously and the file disappeared after a recent system change. It is not a guaranteed source of imged32.dll, and it should not replace a current backup.
- Press Windows key, type Create a restore point, and open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Back up current personal files.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
After Windows returns, test the application. If the file is still missing, repair or reinstall the application from trusted media.

DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a missing third-party Borland DLL.
Use them when you also see wider Windows symptoms, such as damaged system features, repeated component errors, or failures in unrelated built-in applications.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft documents this order in its System File Checker guidance. If either command reports an error, record the exact message instead of repeatedly running the commands.

Do not treat this as a driver problem
imged32.dll is an application DLL, not a graphics, chipset, printer, or storage driver. Updating a driver is unlikely to restore it.

Check drivers only when the complete error also indicates a display, printer, sound, or device failure:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the error.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates for driver updates. Use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page when Windows does not provide an appropriate driver.

If hunting through Device Manager and matching hardware versions is the difficult part, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation is completed by the full version. It is not required for imged32.dll, and repairing the owning application remains the correct fix for this file.
What to provide if the normal repair fails
Collect the following before seeking further help:
- The complete error text
- The exact executable named in the dialog
- The application’s installation path
- The location where
imged32.dllwas found, if present - The file’s Properties information
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 version and system type
- Antivirus protection-history details
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 16-bit
- Whether reinstalling from trusted media changed the error
- Any new DLL name shown after the first repair
If reinstalling changes the message to name another DLL, continue from that new message. The original imged32.dll error may have been only the first visible symptom of a damaged installation or missing dependency.
