In a 2020 anniversary interview, then-CEO Stephen D’Angelo described how Cryptic Studios carried lessons from City of Heroes into Champions Online, Star Trek Online and Neverwinter. His account traces changes in the studio’s approach to world-building, player collaboration and free-to-play design. It is a retrospective—not a new interview: GamesBeat published it on October 6, 2020, around Cryptic’s twentieth anniversary, and updated the page on June 20, 2025. The studio was founded in 2000.
What the 2020 interview says about Cryptic’s four eras
D’Angelo, who had worked at Cryptic since 2007 and was its CEO when he spoke with GamesBeat, organized the studio’s history into four eras. That is his retrospective framework, rather than an independent or definitive periodization of the company.
- City of Heroes: Cryptic’s first major game established the importance, in D’Angelo’s view, of making a world players wanted to spend time in.
- Champions Online and Star Trek Online: The studio tried to become a team capable of making games consistently, while taking on new superhero and science-fiction worlds.
- Neverwinter: Cryptic designed with free-to-play and international markets in mind.
- Magic: Legends: D’Angelo described this as a new era just beginning in 2020. The companion interview said the game was preparing for release; that is historical context, not evidence that it remains a current Cryptic project.
The account is useful as a view into how a studio leader understood the company’s development, but its judgments and recollections belong to D’Angelo. Read the GamesBeat anniversary interview.
What Cryptic carried forward from City of Heroes
D’Angelo’s central lesson was that a persistent online game needs a world players want to visit. He put it plainly: “You have to start by making the world a place people want to visit.” For Cryptic, that meant more than creating missions; the setting and the social experience had to give players reasons to return.

He also pointed to sidekicking, a way for characters at different levels to play together. As he explained, “A high level player could bring a low level player to their level and go play content together.” The design addressed a familiar challenge for online role-playing games: friends may want to adventure together even when their characters have progressed at different rates.
How the player fantasy shaped each licensed world
The games share a studio, but they do not ask players to inhabit the same kind of world. The interviews frame their differences through genre and the fantasy at each game’s center, rather than through a controlled comparison of quality or audience.

| Game | World | Design emphasis described in the interviews |
|---|---|---|
| Champions Online | Superheroes | A superhero setting, discussed alongside Cryptic’s work to communicate with the game’s community. |
| Star Trek Online | Science fiction | D’Angelo said the core experience had to be captaining a starship: “In Star Trek people wanted to be the captain of a starship. That had to be the heart of the experience.” |
| Neverwinter | Fantasy and Dungeons & Dragons | Stories and locations needed to reflect what players expected from the Dungeons & Dragons world. |
For licensed games, D’Angelo argued that a developer must understand the property and care about it: “Know your IP and love it as much as the owner of the IP does, and you’ll make a better partnership out of it, make a better game out of it.” That is his view of successful collaboration, not a guarantee that familiarity alone produces a good adaptation.
Why Cryptic moved toward free-to-play
The shift in business model formed part of the studio’s evolution. Both Champions Online and Star Trek Online moved from subscriptions to free-to-play, while D’Angelo described Neverwinter as being designed with free-to-play and worldwide markets in mind. The interviews present this as a change in how Cryptic approached reaching players, not as proof that one model is universally better.

- You've studied the footage, connected the dots, and gathered what meagre evidence you could. You're close - soon the whole world will know the truth behind the Cryptid.
- Cryptid is a unique deduction game of honest misdirection in which players must try to uncover information about their opponent's clues while throwing them off the scent of their own.
- The game includes a modular board, five clue books, and a deck of setup cards with hundreds of possible setups across two difficulty levels. It is also supported by an entirely optional digital companion, allowing for faster game setup and a near-infinite range of puzzles.
- 3-5 players, Ages 10+
- 30-50 minute play time
The companion conversation also discusses Cryptic’s work with Atari, Perfect World and Wizards of the Coast. These partnerships and business changes sit behind the games’ development, but the interviews do not provide a controlled financial comparison of the arrangements or models. Read the companion GamesBeat interview on the business model.
Listening to players across different communities
The companion interview describes Cryptic using community channels, surveys, blogs and gameplay data to hear from players, then revisiting systems and balance over time. The challenge was not simply to gather feedback: the games draw on distinct genres and licensed worlds, so the studio had to communicate with communities whose expectations differed.

GamesBeat asked how communication varied among the fantasy world of Neverwinter, the science-fiction setting of Star Trek and the superhero world of Champions. D’Angelo offered broad observations about player audiences, but explicitly treated them as generalizations and said he could not support them. They should not be read as verified demographic findings.

The 2020 conversation reflects Cryptic under D’Angelo’s leadership at that time; it does not describe the studio’s later ownership or management. PC Gamer reported on January 27, 2026, that Jack Emmert had returned as CEO, Cryptic had separated from Embracer Group the prior year through a management buyout alongside Arc Games, and Cryptic had reassumed responsibility for Star Trek Online, Neverwinter and Champions Online. Those later developments should be kept distinct from D’Angelo’s earlier account. Read PC Gamer’s January 2026 report.
