Cryptmaster is a single-player dungeon adventure where words are more than puzzle answers: you use them to restore abilities, interact with the world and cast spells in combat. That makes it an unusual fit for players who want a dungeon crawler built around language, though the official descriptions alone do not establish how forgiving its word recognition, hints or puzzles feel in practice.
What kind of game is Cryptmaster?
Developed by Paul Hart and Lee Williams and published by Akupara Games, Cryptmaster combines dungeon exploration with word-based interaction. The publisher and Steam describe a game in which players type or speak words to recover lost abilities, solve riddles and quests, and communicate with characters and the environment. The premise follows four heroes whose rest is disturbed by the Cryptmaster. They travel through buried regions, including the Bonehouses, Sunken Sea and Downwood, while recovering memories and uncovering the mystery surrounding the Soulstone. Words are part of the intended control scheme, not just a theme layered over conventional dungeon combat. The official descriptions say players can type or speak answers and commands, with words used for riddles, quests, abilities and spells. Whether that design feels like satisfying deduction or frustrating guesswork depends on details the official feature descriptions do not establish: how reliably input is recognized, which synonyms are accepted, how puzzles are taught, and whether hints help when a player gets stuck. Those are the most important questions to answer in a hands-on review, particularly for players who prefer controller-led play or do not want word entry to dominate every encounter.
What else is in the adventure?
Akupara’s feature list names creature collecting, card combat, fishing and bardic rap battles alongside exploration and word puzzles. These activities suggest the game varies its dungeon loop, but the feature list does not show how often they appear or whether they deepen the adventure or interrupt its pace. Players deciding whether the mix suits them should look for direct gameplay evidence about that balance rather than treating the list as a verdict.

Akupara lists PC releases on May 9, 2024, followed by PlayStation and Xbox releases on October 3, 2024.
